Solid body, excellent images.
Did not have any of the negative experiences that I saw on the many forums. The only complaint that seemed to have any merit was about the mirror slap induced shake at certain shutter speeds. That was easily worked around. Properly set up, the auto focus proved to be much better than I was led to believe. I shot birds and bugs at high speed and had very good luck. I photographed a football game and a basketball game and had almost no misses. The extra resolution, compared to my D 90 & D 80 helps when I have to crop. My favorite set up for wildlife is my D 7000 and the 300 f4 Nikkor with the 1.4 tc. Paired with my 12-24 wide angle, it does a great job with landscape photos as well. I have not tried video.

It takes great pictures in a variety of conditions.
I was a long time Canon/Olympus owner and switched to the Nikon D7000 because of the features and thinking I would get more better pictures on the first try under less than ideal conditions. I was not disappointed. I've had the camera and multiple lenses over a year now and still love the camera. I do mostly outdoor nature photography, but have been very impressed with the low light indoor capabilities and close up garden photos. I've even upgraded my daughters to D5100 cameras and have been impressed with those.
July 16, 2012
Amazing!
After doing all the research, I have decide to get the D7000 for one particular reason--nothing's much better. The D7000 outshines every competition there is. I especially love it's amazing performance in low-light situation. And, of course, Nikon D7000 simply looks "beautiful", physically. It's a head turner. Whenever I use this camera, people just stares. It's a bonus for me.

Great!
Just got the D7000 last week, what a vast improvement over the D200.
Images are much more detailed, viewfinder is much better.

The manual located here: http://support.nikonusa.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/17008/~/user's-manual---d7000---guide-to-digital-photographyhas a great tutorial starting on page 21 on going through about page 39. These are really short pages, but each step is important.
You camera is very sophiticated and can do a lot of stuff. Once you get it setup, it can be as simple as point and shoot, or as complex in manual mode as you want to go. The steps listed below should cover all of the setup to make sure you have everything ready to go. (Seems like a lot, but I assure you, once you learn it, its easy.)
Make sure:
1. You have a charged Nikon battey installed (batteries don't come charged)
2. You have a compatible lens, it is attached, and in A or M/A if the lens has this switch
3. Insert an SD, SDHC, or SDHX memory card. (Make sure the write protect switch is off if it has one)
4. Format the memory card
5. Press and hold the two buttons with a green dot on them for more than 2 seconds to reset any settings back to factory. (The camera will turn off briefly while they are reset.)
6. Make sure release mode is set to S (Single) on the top left of the camera
7. Set the exposure mode to A (Auto) (inside the release mode dial on the top left)
8. Make sure you have enough light, that the camera focuses (it won't shoot a picture by default if its not in focus)
9. If you are not using a new DX lens (usually sold as a kit with the camera), then look to see if the lens has an apertature setting (called a gelding) at the base where it attaches to the camera. These older lenses have to be set to max aperature for the camera to fire, which is isually marked with an orange dot)
If you are still having trouble, take the camera to an high quality photo store. Ask them how to work it. It should not matter that you did not buy it there. Most folks are more than happy to help people that are learning. Folks like me hang out in the photo stores waiting for someone to ask us. :)

Answer:
The D7000 has a menu setting which will not allow the camera to take a picture if the picture is out of focus. If you're taking pictures indoors in dimly-lit situations, that might be the problem. That setting can be changed (not recommended). For best results, make sure your camera's focus is set to AF-A or AF-C (it can be set by pressing the button in the middle of the focus lever, located to the bottom right of the lens as you look at the front of the camera) and spinning the command dial until that setting appears in the LCD an top of the camera. Check page 208 of your User Manual for details. Try taking multiple shots in M mode (manual). Get out in a bright, sunny day and try again. Check sub-menu 'b' in Custom Settings Menu if you don't care if the pictures are out of focus. You can set the shutter release protocol so you'll take a picture whether or not it's in focus. If none of these work, you may want to contact Nikon tech support.Jul 31, 2011 by

Assuming you buy the Nikon factory kit that is the lens supplied. It is available body only (no lens)
I bought a D7000 two weeks ago and have focus issues with this camera with every lens. (18-105mm VR, 18-55mm ED, 18-200mm VRII, and 70-300mm VR, and 50mm F1.8) I typically shoot nature and scenery @ ISO400 and switch between P, S, A and M modes. Image formats are Large JPG and Uncompressed NEF. I hand hold for most shots. My pictures using the D7000 are not as sharp as I would expect. My other camera is a Nikon D80 and it produces sharp pictures using the settings and lenses described above. I can see the detail diffences in this camera: i.e. - richer colors and higher detail in shadows, but the darn focus is just enough out of whack that it takes away from the rest. Here is an image I took with the D7000. This is after sharpening using external software. Using the D80 the provided picture would have provided more detail in the bee and the flower. Think in this case the problem may be camera ???

I had no trouble with my own D7000, but I've heard that some photographers wish for better sharpness and color saturation. You didn't say what shutter speed and F-stop you're operating at, but I would suggest to get a truly accurate test run, you should put your cameras on a tripod and take pictures of exactly the same thing in exactly the same conditions. Very few photographers can hold a camera stock still. Remember to turn OFF VR if your lens is capable of that, when it's on a tripod. There are settings in the D7000 menu for better color saturation look up "Picture Control". There are also settings for better sharpness.I did have some issues with soft focus at first, but I found that as I learned to use the lens/camera combo at the optimal settings, with some adjusted menu settings, my photographs, even hand-held, became tack sharp in the right conditions.

There's no easy way to tell if it's fake unless you're very familiar with workmanship and manufacturing methods, unless of course, it's a really bad counterfeit and just looks really cheap. Remember, however that Nikon sells perfectly-good equipment outside the US that meets the same standards as US equipment, but it does not come with US warranties. The term for this equipment is "grey market". If you have a problem in the US with your purchase, Nikon USA will not touch it. You will need to send it off shore for repair, or get it repaired at your own cost at a local competent camera shop. Some people are fine with grey market equipment. My opinion is that for something as complex and delicate as a camera body, I would not get grey market. I'd pay the extra money to be covered by the US warranty. It is unlikely something bought in China will have a US warranty.Aug 13, 2011 by

The 7000 allows you to pick 1 of 3 different file managment protocols.1) Card 2 can be used as overflow when card 1 is full,
2) Card 2 can simply create a back-up of each file in card 1 (Great for sharing pics at parties and weddings), or...
3) Card 2 can store a copy of the same file in card 1, but as a opposite file format.
(i.e. The same pic will be stored as Jpg Fine in Card 1 and Raw in Card 2)
The choice is yours inside the shooting menu, item #4.
GOOD LUCK!

for nikon official: any chance the d7000 would get a firmware fix to get 1080p@25fps? we here in europe and australia are waiting patiently...
see above. the 1080p@25fps is a long overdue fix for european countries and australia (and basically anywhere where the TV norm is 25fps and the AC is at 50hz). also, any chance a firmware upgrade could introduce a setting to switch shutter button and video record button functionality? it would be great if i could use a remote to start/stop video recording.

I don't have this lens so I can't answer your first problem; but I have some thoughts about the second problem. When using the built in flash, in "crowded" scenes, sometimes you will get a high flash return from some very close bright object that may be way out of focus , so not feature prominently in your image, but the high flash return from the "interloper" will shorten the exposure and so render the rest of the scene darker. You might try using a more center weighted exposure mode, that ignores edge objects that may be much closer than your subject of interest. This also can be a "problem" of these wide range zooms, when you use a longer focal length to pick out a smaller distant object, and the flash bounce from some closer near object shuts down the exposure earlier. Wedding dinners are a great place to have this problem, when the table flowers turn out the lights on the distant person you are trying to catch in a special moment.

The DX format is known as APS-C in the digital camera marketplace. The FX format is full-frame, meaning that it has a 24 X 36 mm sensor, which is the exact same size as 35 mm film.SInce the DX format is smaller than the full-frame FX format, it affects lens decisions. In an FX body, a 200 mm lens is really 200 mm. In a DX body, a 200 mm lens actually delivers an image equivalent to a 300 mm lens (1.5X crop factor).
Because of the "crop factor", it is harder to get extreme wide-angle out of the DX format. But it does deliver excellent performance at the telephoto end.

There are all kinds of Nikor lenses which would do the trick. What I would recommend is that you get the Nikor 18-105 F3.5-5.6G VR, or some other zoom lens that has a relatively short zoom range. This is a lens that is often sold as part of a kit, and it is actually a very good lens. It will allow you to take family shots, but also let you try a bunch of other styles and formats. Some photos I have taken with mine have surprised my pro friends. It costs about the same as a 35mm prime lens, and gives you much more flexibility. A rule of thumb is that the longer the zoom range, the less sharp the pictures will be in most of the range. This lens costs about $400.00 US but can be found for less on sale.Oct 28, 2011 by

Answer:
It depends upon what you mean by "goes dead". Do you mean that none of the buttons work, and that you cannot get the camera into Live View mode or anything at all? Does it mean that all displays including the display on the top of the body next to the shutter button all go completely blank? Does it mean that you can't see anything except a very dim display through the viewfinder until you press the shutter or some other button? If that's the case, you may have a problem. HOWEVER, as the Nikon staffer mentioned, the camera goes into stand-by mode after a few seconds if no buttons are pushed. If you press the shutter button 1/2 way down, or press other buttons and the camera "wakes up" it is operating as it is supposed to. You can set how long the camera waits before it goes into stand by mode by reading the procedure on pages 214 and 215 and 219, among other pages.Oct 30, 2011 by

My original question was that after shooting for awhile, I start getting a F-- error code. The lens won't focus and the camera won't take the photo. I can get it to work again by going into manual mode, but I would prefer to shoot in automatic mode. One of the Nikon staff that answered the question said that "F-- Means that the camera is not recognizing the lens or is a non-CPU lens is attached. Select Aperture priority or Manual Mode."
The thing is, I am using the Nikon lens that came with the camera. It will work fine at first and then after awhile, it stops. Why will it work one moment and not the next?
The camera is less than a year old. Why is it not recognizing the exact lens that comes in the kit? What can I do?

I'm not an expert on this but I did have this focus problem with my new D7000. Try detaching the lens and re-attaching it to the body. While it is off the body, look at the connection points where you click the lens onto the body; and see if there is any dust or particles. Use a clean lens cloth to very gently remove them. Also if your camera has a feature (review menu selections) to clean the mirror, you might try this in case the mirror has particles on it. I would imagine there are numerous ways dirt/dust can get inside.. from photographing in windy or dusty locations / changing lenses in these conditions / to storing the camera in a case that has collected fine dust or dirt particles over time. IF it is all clean and new and detaching/re-attaching doesn't work, call for support. Hopefully it is still within your warranty period.Nov 5, 2011 by

OK. Clearly something is wrong with either the camera or the lens. You have to figure out which it is. The thing to do is to borrow or rent another lens and use it for a while to see if you get the same code. If you do get the same code, then it's a problem in the camera body. If you do not get the same code, then it's a problem with the lens. There is nothing you personally can do to fix whatever is wrong except one thing. Check the contacts on the lens and in the opening of the camera body to assure there is no dirt or dust on the contacts. If you don't spot anything obvious, after doing the above testing, you will have to send the offending piece of equipment in for repair, or take the equipment to a local Nikon Authorized repair facility.Oct 28, 2011 by

I have created U1 & U2 custom settings and I want to write them to the SD card and save them off the camera so I can retrieve the data if necessary or after loaning my camera to another photographer.
What is the procedure?

If you go to the menus on your camera, and find the menu group that has the little wrench icon, then scroll down, you will find a selection "Save/Load". If you save, it will write the settings listed on page 244 to SD Card #1. The card must have enough room on it to accept the file, so it's best that the card is empty. If you have a card reader, you can then move the file to your computer for safe keeping and reuse the card. To reload the file, perform the same steps, but hit "load" instead of "save".Oct 30, 2011 by
