Excellent
I have compared like cameras for the last two months trying to determine which product to purchase. Having used cameras of friends, I finally decided on the Nikon P-510. The picture quality and performance is unbelievable. I do not regret my purchase and would do this all over again as I believe I have purchased the finest camera in it's class!

Awesome zoom and fine piictures!
This camera is so impressive. The mega zoom is awesome and the pictures taken with the zoom are fine and have the balance and brightness.

Great Camera with so many extras
I have owned so many cameras but this is the best camera. It has everything that a person could want. There are some individuals that don't like the video portion but they just have to learn to use it right..
This camera as special effects when taking pictures that I have enjoyed and used many o them. I look forward to continuing to learn to use more of this camera's options and effects.

Excellent portability! See's Saturn!
I use this camera for reasons that should be done with a DSLR. The zoom helps me get the best picts from a safe distance in a war zone. I use manual settings for most of my shots. I included a picture of Saturn from a dark sky location. I used 1/80 shutter, 7.8 fstop and 1600 ISO on a Manfrotto tripod with a 10 second delay. For a point and shoot to reach out this far, is the reason why I do not have a DSLR and spare zooms. We had a mortor explode close by and the camera fell while attached to the tripod. The tripod 1/4" mount broke off the bottom plastic of the P510, so I epoxied the lower half of the camera back on. I would like to see a few changes in firmware. Allow full 8 sec shutter at any ISO. Add a RAW NEF or JPG choice. Allow digital zoom in Manual mode. Add a bulb function. Allow the screen to dim much more for night astrophotography. Add a finer focus control as the current one moves too course. Finally, make it in Gloss Yellow.

Moral of the story - Stick with Nikon
I've been a Nikon user for the past 25 years and have purchased several Nikon cameras, film and now digital. I recently read the specs of the Canon G1-X and bought it-and then took it back three days later and bought the P510.
I was looking for a smaller, but quality-speced camera to use when my Nikon Digital SLR with accessories was too bulky. The most important spec for me was an electronic viewfinder which the P510 has. Everything else is icing on the cake and their's lot of icing - 42x optical zoom, built in GPS, PSA and M modes, 16.1 MP sensor but having an electronic view finder was the big one! Photos are great-a perfect camera for what I was looking for and it's easy to use.

Answer:
Yes, but is there a lag - ie. you press the shutter and half a second later it takes the picture? I do a lot of wildlife photography with a D90 and assortment of lenses - I appreciate I'm not going to get the same performance but the lag factor is important to me as wildlife is often on the move. I don't want to be pressing the button for that perfect shot only to find it took a picture after the event! What appeals to me is the zoom but I'd rather invest my hard-earned cash in a longer lens for my digi SLR if this isn't going to work for me?Mar 2, 2012 by

Answer:
The new COOLPIX P510 has a fast start. Most of the time shooting delay is caused by focusing. Press the button half way down (and hold it in) and let the camera pre-focus; when the subject is perfect press the button the rest of the way to shoot.Has staff answer

We don't have hard copies of the user's manual for the COOLPIX P510. The camera comes with the user’s manual in a CD with printing rights.

The Nikon Team replied to me...
The camera clock may not be set correctly. Please reset the camera (MENU>SETUP>RESET ALL) and set the Time again.

I did it, but I still can get gps data... I´m in Colombia as I said and I had configured in EST: New York, Toronto, Lima!!!:. But still doesn´t work!!!.. Do you have other solution?

As I understand it, the GPS in this camera is a "true" GPS, which means that it must be able to "see" 4 or more satellites to compute a position. If you are indoors, under a heavy tree canopy, in a deep canyon, or otherwise in a situation where a large portion of the sky is blocked, the GPS will not work.Answer:

Can the p510 take a lens filter or not? If it can take a lens filter what is the size? If not, why won't nikon just say so.
I like to have a protective lens filter on out in the field and I like to use a polarizer to see the effects. I will not buy the p510 if it can't take a lens filter!

From looking at specs and accessories, it doesn’t appear that it will take a filter, most smaller cameras / point and shoots will not...I had an older Coolpix 5700 that was basically the same camera shape and size, I was actually able to purchase an extension tube type kit that would allow filters to be used and it came with 4 filters, one being a polarizer...I would ask "Support and or Service if they still make this kit and if made for this camera...
Hope this helps...

The COOLPIX P510 doesn't have a output for an external microphone (it's built-in).
I already had the Coolpix S4100 which numbers all images consecutively. That makes sense. This past weekend i bought the Coolpix P510. Each time i upload images to my computer (sometimes i do this several times a day), it will start over the numbering, i.e. 001, 002, 003, etc. That's ridiculous! I've wasted lots of time to rename the new images so that there no conflicts with images uploaded the day before and to prevent more messages "this file already exists on your computer. Do you want to override this?"
What do i do to have images from the P510 uploaded consecutively as well from now on?

To my knowledge, the software or program you use to upload or download from camera to computer generally has settingd for how the pictures are labeled or renamed if you like.
Also, every camera i have had, form Nikon (6) has file naming and image numbering sequence to be set in the camera...

Please see page # 45 of the user's manual for the COOLPIX P510 regarding ISO sensitivity settings.
In my brand new P510, full resolution images on playback fill hardly half the screen. I can zoom out (thumbnail display) but not in. On page 35 of the Reference Manual, this doesn't sound normal. Am I missing something or is the camera defective?
Incidentally, zoom out is accomplished by the zoom control, but not as promised by the command dial, referring to the first sentence under Playback Zoom on p35.
