The Perfect Camera This is my first Nikon and I love it! For the last 20 years I have only owned & used Canon. While I am still exploring/learning about all of the features of the Coolpix L820, this is the best camera I have ever owned. I am highly impressed with the cameras zoom capabilities & the picture clarity when the camera is in zoom mode. The camera is easy to navigate and use. I can honestly say that this camera has made me a Nikon fan for life. Any future cameras I purchase will be Nikon because I am highly impressed with the camera I got for the price I paid. I paid much more for a Canon Powershot and I was never able to get the exceptional quality of picture I have gotten with my Nikon Coolpix. I would highly recommend this camera to anyone, especially people like myself who are not professional photographers but want to capture the shot just right. April 10, 2014
I am impressed with the Nikon Coolpix L850 Right out of the box this one amazing camera! The features are very easy to operate, set up is amazingly simple. I am old school all of the way but I have wanted to update to a digital camera since the old days of film cameras. This camera is a great entry level camera with many great features that I would expect in one many times more the dollar amount. Needless to say I am impressed beyond words! I would recommend this camera to anyone on a budget who wants the affordability, but wants the features of a professional; this one has it all. Kudos Nikon! March 31, 2014
Re..."Happy"... I bought the L820 as a self indulgent retirement gift for my-self this past November. As good as the Canon point and shoot I also own is, I felt limited by it's 720 resolution abilities. The L820 was on sale and the price was too good to pass up.There's a lot to like about this model Nikon, it has more features than I'll ever use which is okay as the features being used so far do a terrific job and exceed my needs and expectations. The only thing I find as a negative is the lens cover.Only once have I forgotten to remove the cover and fortunately the camera didn't seem worse for the experience.Olympus uses a spring loaded design where by four over lapped lens covers permanently attatched move aside as the lens moves out from the housing. It's an excellent design and one I would like to see used by Nikon.Another plus if possible for the price point would be an old fashioned view finder.Sometimes the flat screen on the back would wash out in sun light.A feature I like with the L820 is at the 1080 resolution enlarged images don't lose crispness or clarity. The video is all I could ask for, with good sound capture and fine detailing in the imagery. The use of double A batteries was a surprise but in hind-sight it makes sense.Like Coca-Cola,double A batteries can be found anywhere you go in the world and you can also buy them as rechargeables too.The L820 got a serious work out for the two months I was gone over seas and I'm very happy with my buying it. Really a great camera, so much so I think if used by professionals on a daily basis it would give a good account of itself given its pricing..."Boomer48"... March 10, 2014
Wonderful Camera easy to use. Everything about this camera is easy to use. Nikon is the best brand and well worth the money. March 2, 2014
a small but powerfull camera The Nikon Coolpix L820 camera is an excellent camera for the novice holder. It contains a lot of features in the menu as it does not have the dial listing like the higher price camera's does, which is one drawback as when you try to catch a constant moving object or person performing on stage, it is hard to keep track of the action in the window since it moves a lot. (: You have to read the manual good to understand when to look for a specific action to lock the camera on. But the great thing about the camera is it has a great HD video recorder built in and it beats the higher price camera's ($800 to $900) that I own from Olympus and Minolta. By and large a great product for the price.. January 22, 2014

Answer:
The L820 does not give you the ability to control aperture directly so it is going to be difficult for you to control your depth of field, especially when shooting in bright light. Macro mode will usually give you a bokeh effect but this mode may not work for all the situations in which you might want to achieve bokeh. Other factors that affect bokeh are your lens focal length and your distance to your subject. To decrease your depth of field experiement with zooming your camera to its longest focal length (without using digital zoom) and getting closer to your subject. Lowering your ISO (available when shooting in Auto) may also force your camera to open the aperture wide enough to increase bokeh.

Answer:
Don't make the mistake that every compact digital camera owner makes, turn the flash off. The little flash is only good for 10-15 feet, regardless of the zoom factor of the camera.

With the flash forced off, the camera will automatically turn the ISO up so you have a chance to get a concert shot. Remember to be as still as possible.

Even better, after forcing the flash to the off position, set the ISO manually. Try 400 at the concert, check the pics for blur. If they are fine, leave it there. If there's a slight softness/blur, try 800, and repeat.

Use the lowest ISO that freezes the action because noise gets bad at 800 and beyond with compact cameras.

And finally, practice at home before you go. Try taking indoor shots without the flash, learn how to turn the flash off and change the ISO manually, learn it by heart so you aren't lost at the show.

Answer:
Yes the L820 4-seconds exposure can be use to take astro photos. Astrophotography by definition is taking a photograph of an object in space. Pictures can be taken with any kind of camera from a mobile phone to digital camera to a space telecope mounted on a dedicated camera system. The subject matter can include anything from the Moon to the Milky Way (Stars, Planets, Asteroids, Gasses, Comets, etc.)

It all depends on what type of results you want to achieve. Results varies with exposure settings and equipments used. Please check out the following articles in the links below.

Answer:
To view 3D images in 3D, a 3D-compatible TV or monitor is required. Use a 3D-compatible HDMI cable to connect the camera and these devices for 3D viewing. More info on 3D photography can be found on pages 45-46 of the L820 Reference Manual.

Set the HDMI 3D output option under TV Settings in the Settings Menu to 'On'. See page 74 of the L820 Reference Manual for details.

I was at an expo, and some photos I thought was in focus turned out blurry. Not sure ethylene. I used a monopod to attempt to make the camera more stable. As I said. I thought the photos wherein focus on the camera. After uploading to my iPad, I found out they were blurred and I'm a bit bummed. I still feel I'm learning the camera. I've used close up/portrait/continuous/sports modes. This was at a Star Trek Con.

Answer:
Hi,
Your L820 has a good bit of flexibility as to settings, and you've done the right thing by experimenting with the different built-in 'modes' - and your use of a mono-pod is an excellent technique. But, as your question infers, now it's time to explore your camera's ISO settings!

For a typical expo/show floor, 800, 1600 or even 3200 ISO will likely have to be tried. You'll need to 'lock' your L820 in each of these ISO settings in order to experiment. Also, as your images will contain some 'noise' the higher you go with the ISO setting, do try to use the lowest ISO possible that will capture images without blur. Lighting at expo/show floors WILL vary, so a different ISO setting may be needed at each show.
You've got an excellent, versatile camera in your Nikon L820 - experiment with those higher ISO settings and you'll likely achieve the image quality you are looking for!

I've read through the owner's manual & this product forum. Don't really understand what the difference between these two battery types & what type of AA rechargeable batteries I need for my camera. None of the batteries sold locally carry either of these labels, thinking it is something on Nikon batties only. Already have a set of 4 AA rechargeable batteries labeled NI-MH 1700mAh 1.2 volts & a charger, wondering why I couldn't use these.

Answer:
The only difference is that in one set there is two batteries in the other there are four. The batteries you have will work but at only 1700mah may not last too long, I would be looking for at least 2600mah batteries to use.

First, I LOVE NIKON! With that being said, I own a Nikon EM 35mm film, auto winder, speed light, 2 lenses, 2x converter & a zoom, I also own a D3100 DSLR and a point/shoot Coolpix. I would like to add the L820 in Purple, why does it cost more than the Classic Black? And, why doesn't it come with rechargeables like the D3100, or the other Coolpixes?
