The Perfect Camera This is my first Nikon and I love it! For the last 20 years I have only owned & used Canon. While I am still exploring/learning about all of the features of the Coolpix L820, this is the best camera I have ever owned. I am highly impressed with the cameras zoom capabilities & the picture clarity when the camera is in zoom mode. The camera is easy to navigate and use. I can honestly say that this camera has made me a Nikon fan for life. Any future cameras I purchase will be Nikon because I am highly impressed with the camera I got for the price I paid. I paid much more for a Canon Powershot and I was never able to get the exceptional quality of picture I have gotten with my Nikon Coolpix. I would highly recommend this camera to anyone, especially people like myself who are not professional photographers but want to capture the shot just right. April 10, 2014
I am impressed with the Nikon Coolpix L850 Right out of the box this one amazing camera! The features are very easy to operate, set up is amazingly simple. I am old school all of the way but I have wanted to update to a digital camera since the old days of film cameras. This camera is a great entry level camera with many great features that I would expect in one many times more the dollar amount. Needless to say I am impressed beyond words! I would recommend this camera to anyone on a budget who wants the affordability, but wants the features of a professional; this one has it all. Kudos Nikon! March 31, 2014
Re..."Happy"... I bought the L820 as a self indulgent retirement gift for my-self this past November. As good as the Canon point and shoot I also own is, I felt limited by it's 720 resolution abilities. The L820 was on sale and the price was too good to pass up.There's a lot to like about this model Nikon, it has more features than I'll ever use which is okay as the features being used so far do a terrific job and exceed my needs and expectations. The only thing I find as a negative is the lens cover.Only once have I forgotten to remove the cover and fortunately the camera didn't seem worse for the experience.Olympus uses a spring loaded design where by four over lapped lens covers permanently attatched move aside as the lens moves out from the housing. It's an excellent design and one I would like to see used by Nikon.Another plus if possible for the price point would be an old fashioned view finder.Sometimes the flat screen on the back would wash out in sun light.A feature I like with the L820 is at the 1080 resolution enlarged images don't lose crispness or clarity. The video is all I could ask for, with good sound capture and fine detailing in the imagery. The use of double A batteries was a surprise but in hind-sight it makes sense.Like Coca-Cola,double A batteries can be found anywhere you go in the world and you can also buy them as rechargeables too.The L820 got a serious work out for the two months I was gone over seas and I'm very happy with my buying it. Really a great camera, so much so I think if used by professionals on a daily basis it would give a good account of itself given its pricing..."Boomer48"... March 10, 2014
Wonderful Camera easy to use. Everything about this camera is easy to use. Nikon is the best brand and well worth the money. March 2, 2014
a small but powerfull camera The Nikon Coolpix L820 camera is an excellent camera for the novice holder. It contains a lot of features in the menu as it does not have the dial listing like the higher price camera's does, which is one drawback as when you try to catch a constant moving object or person performing on stage, it is hard to keep track of the action in the window since it moves a lot. (: You have to read the manual good to understand when to look for a specific action to lock the camera on. But the great thing about the camera is it has a great HD video recorder built in and it beats the higher price camera's ($800 to $900) that I own from Olympus and Minolta. By and large a great product for the price.. January 22, 2014

Answer:
Use normal SD cards, eye fi cards are third party, but bear in mind that using eye fi cards will drain the battery a lot quicker as they are always searching of a wifi connection. Details on how to set then up are on the eye fi web site.

I just got this camera for Christmas, and I must say, wow, it's amazing! Best camera I've used yet. However, I'm more of a video guy myself as opposed to stills, and I noticed that no matter what resolution you choose, the video length is always limited to 29 minutes long. I tried a search on this, but came up with nothing, so I'll ask here. How, if at all, do I change the video length limit to unlimited? Thanks in advance!

Maximum video time is 29 minutes, no way of changing. Only work around is as you approach 29 minutes stop and then immediately restart filming. When you finished filming stitch together files in the movie editor section of the supplied ViewNX2 software..

First I'm a total photo newbie, Bought this camera for Christmas reviewed and played with it in the store many hours before purchasing. Really happy with it speed/batteries. so much to learn. One of the abilities that I was looking for was a long zoom for taking pictures of the wildlife we get on our property. Weve had a pair of owls that have made there home here for several years and have always wanted and been unable to get a picture of them. I was excited to use the camera for the first time on the way home when I spotted the owls and took my first zoom picture. It was on auto mode/default settings. it was dusk and about 25 degrees and I shot from several distances. from longest zoom out our back door. to about 50ft away. They looked great on the viewfinder but after downloading on my computer there is a lot of white and graininess in all the photos no matter what distance. I understand I have a lot to learn I have read the manual over and over, But my question is given this situation what should have I done or what would have been the best settings to use to get the clearest detail. Auto or not? I did use the editing features on the camera to lighten it up. I understand that's a big question, any links/info or help using the zooming features would be really appreciated thank you

Answer:
The grain you are seeing in the photos is called noise. when you zoom with the L820 the aperture close down to F/5.8 limiting the amount of light entering the camera. To compensate for that the camera raises the ISO. High ISO will cause the grain in the photo. Not much you can do, it is the limitations of the camera lens. You will have to try shooting in better light conditions. Here are a few Nikon articles on aperture, ISO and shutter speed.:

Answer:
The sports scene mode lets you capture fast moving sports or action subjects using a fast shutter speed and continuous shooting. Continuous is one of the shooting options found in the Auto Mode of select Nikon digital cameras. Continuous allows you to take a series of pictures. With the COOLPIX L820, sports mode will not give the option of changing speeds of continous. In auto mode, the camera has the ability to allow the continous speed to adjust by the user's choice.

How do you get clear, crisp photos in Sports Mode?

I bought this camera because of the many good reviews. I'm not totally clueless when it comes to cameras, but I cannot figure out why the subject is blurry in every photo I shoot in sports mode. I've tried it with the flash and without. I practiced with my dog tonight and I was able to get a good shot of her mid-jump, but that was in auto mode with a flash. When I used sports mode, I got a blurry arc that was her body jumping off the couch. Are there any tips or am I missing something obvious? Thanks for any help you can provide.

I am attempting to attach a resized but otherwise unedited photo I took of my daughter playing basketball last weekend. Considering the darkness of the photo, I doubt I had the flash on for this. I did have it on tonight, however, when I tried to capture my dog. The image is not showing up in the preview screen so I'm not sure if it'll show up when the question is posted. If not, I apologize.

I was looking at the camera today. It was in sports mode and I think HDR was on. I zoomed in all the way and looked at a box about 10 to 15 ft away. The text on it was not in focus, although backing off the zoom a bit brought it into focus. Is that normal behavior for the camera? How durable is the camera btw.The store may have damaged the camera but I have no way to tell. I may buy one by weeks end.

Answer:
What you experience with the camera is normal. It has a minimum focus distance when you zoomed all the way out and it has a minimimun focus distance when you zoom all the way in. If you are going to focus on a text, you should turn on micro mode. There is nothing wrong with your camera. You just need to read the manual and familiarize yourself with it and you will know what to do when thing aren't going right.

Answer:
No, Coolpix cameras have fixed lenses. You would have to get either a Nikon 1 series or one of Nikon's DSLRs to have changeable lenses.

When shooting a video it is recommended that the video focus mode is in AF-F, which is Auto Focus Full Time. This will allow the camera to continue to focus while recording.
