See where you've been

Built-in GPS with Points of Interest (POI) for creating amazing photo journals

Relive the excitement of your travels in a whole new way. The COOLPIX P520 records the exact location of each shot you take, so you can follow the path of your adventure and every stunning view along the way! Share your journeys on Google Earth™, Google+™, and other social media sites or with the included Nikon View NX2 software. Built-in GPS helps you navigate unfamiliar destinations, and Points of Interest (POI) show you nearby photo-ops like scenic lookouts and historic landmarks. The COOLPIX P520 is the ultimate travel companion!

Share to your compatible smartphone or tablet

Compatible with the WU-1a wireless mobile adapter for anytime, anywhere sharing

Superior low-light performance

High-performance CMOS image sensor lets you shoot without a flash

Imagine being able to shoot without a flash at weddings, concerts, parties—anywhere your flash normally fires. You won't have to interrupt a moment to capture it, and your photos and HD videos will look more natural and true to your memory. The COOLPIX P520 performs so well in low light situations that, in most cases, using the flash is optional. Of course, when the lighting is extremely poor and you need a flash, it'll be there.

Record superior videos

1080p Full HD videos with stereo sound for dazzling movies

If you want a compact camera that shoots stunning Full HD videos, the COOLPIX P520 delivers. 1080p Full HD means exceptional video quality. Record the action, then connect to an HDTV and watch your videos come alive. A built-in mic records high-quality audio in stereo. Your videos will look and sound phenomenal.

Don't sweat a little camera shake

Lens-shift Vibration Reduction helps keep the shot steady, even if your hands are not. Say goodbye to blurry photos, shaky videos and tripods.

Take control of your vision

When you want to take control of exposure, the COOLPIX P520 is ready. Select from P/S/A/M exposure modes and the creative options will seem endless.

Gain new perspectives

Use the 3.2-inch ultra-high-resolution (921,000 dot) Vari-angle LCD monitor to capture some really unconventional angles.

Freeze action in its tracks

When the action speeds up, simply hold the shutter button and fire off up to 7 continuous shots per second. Catch views you may not have seen before in your photos.

Feel, Weight Balance Excellent feel with great balance and I feel in full control of the camera for any shot September 26, 2014
Great bridge camera. I originally owned to Nikon film cameras in the early 80's, Took really good photos on horseback in Wyoming, Colorado, and Big Bend NP. Had a lot of compliments on my slides. Last fall, I decided I wanted to get back into photography as a serious amateur, and bought a Nikon Coolpix L820 which was very good but wanted more manual control on photos. So in Mary 2014 bought a Nikon Coolpix P520 and gave the L820 to my wife. P520 is a GREAT camera, especially for the price. Have had great compliments on my photos. This camera can do so much, it's hard to believe that it is a bridge camera. Last week I bought a second P520 to use as a back up and to have each one programmed for different situations. These cameras will do so much more than my old Nikon film cameras that had about a half dozen lenses. I do wish that Nikon made a filter attachment capability and lens hood for these cameras. Surely there is a way. Otherwise it is a GREAT camera, and why I have ended up with two of that model. August 4, 2014
My Nikon Camera I am totally in love with my camera i take it everywhere June 4, 2014
Newbie The pictures I take and the rave reviews I get I feel a little guilty because it is the camera . I am learning and trying different settings . Absolutely fantastic . I have taken over 4000 pictures since December and I take the camera with me everywhere . Great all around May 5, 2014
LOVE THIS CAMERA!! I have always wanted a Nikon as far back as I can remember, and I finally got the chance to own one. I figured I would work my way up through the cameras. Starting with the COOLPIX P520, and it was a great decision!! I love this camera, it has amazing features, its very versatile, and the picture quality is great for its model! For a starter camera for me, I couldn't have asked for better! Thanks Nikon!! April 22, 2014

Is there really a problem if the camera is plugged into its USB cable when the cable has already been plugged into the AC adaptor, and the adaptor has been plugged into the wall receptacle? The P520 manual gives a specific order to do these things. I've always done it the way I described with other battery chargers and such, without any problem. Adaptors are often plugged into receptacles that are hard to reach.

When taking pictures at night of animals, I find that the built in flash on the P520 does not provide the flash range that is required, especially if I zoom out.

In a recent shoot with the P520 a pair of foxes were about 20' away. I was unable to use aperture or portrait setting as it was too dark and the flash fell short by about 6-8' of the focal target.

I have just received the P520 and evening and night time shots are all I have had tie to try.

Answer:
The COOLPIX P520 may not be turning on if any third party non-Nikon power accessories are being used. Nikon cannot speculate that these third party items will operate properly with Nikon products. Make sure that the camera is being plugged into a power source that is producing enough of a charge. Still experiencing some difficulty please contact support.

I recently watched the excellent videos by Joe McNally on controlling light. The problem is, is that he uses a Speedlight and filters to compensate for lighting in situations where there are various sources of lighting at different temperatures.
The P520 has no option for filters and no hot shoe attachment for a speed light.

As I have just received the P520 can the existing lighting be measured or is it trial and error.

Shooting wild life and night scenes, one is not always able to adjust for the distance from the focal target or the ambient light sources in the area.

Measuring the light temperature would help in the exposure settings.

Answer:
The P520 has Night Portrait, Night Landscape, and Fireworks scene modes that are geared towards night photography. There are Sunset, Dusk/Dawn, and Backlighting/HDR modes that help out in mixed lighting situations. Detailed characteristics on these scene modes can be found on pages 37-41 of the P520 manual.

If you do not wish to use Scene Modes, shooting the P520 in P/S/A/M modes (Manual pages 49-52) allows you manage your shutter speed, aperture and ISO (Page 38 of Reference Section of Manual). In addition, the P510 has several standard white balance settings that make allowances for differences in light temperature. For unusual lighting conditions, the Preset Manual White Balance option allows you to manually measure the lighting against a gray or white reference object. See page 32 of the Reference section of the P510 manual for details on using Preset Manual White Balance.

The P520's built-in flash can be shot in Slow Sync and Rear Curtain Sync Modes as well as Auto and Fill Flash Modes(Manual page 56-59). Some Nikon Speedlights can be triggered off-camera by the P520's built-in flash by setting the Speedlight to remote SU-4 mode. In SU-4 mode the Speedlight fire in reaction to the firing of the P520's built-in flash. For an example of how this is managed on a Speedlight, check out pages D20-D21 of the SB-700 manual.

I would like to connect an external flash to the P520 that would increase the range of the flash.

Would this flash be connected to the connector on the side of the camera?

Taking pictures of animals at night you are often limited on how close you can get to the subject and increasing the range of the flash would be great,

Is NIKON willing to make the situation right? The NIKON case that comes in the kit with this camera DOES NOT FIT? I'm disappointed that Nikon let us down on this! The packaged kit came from Costco, it was all in one box.

Is there a planned software update to facilitate easier switching between monitor & viewfinder?

I'm hoping that there is a planned firmware update to enable the viewfinder even if the monitor is not stored. I'd like to be able to switch between the two; I prefer to use a viewfinder almost exclusively, but occasionally want to press a button and be able to display the photo on the monitor without unfolding it. Is this a possibility? It appears that this is a common 'want' among those who have written reviews. I have not yet purchased my camera, and frankly this is the only concern that I have in my decision to buy my own.
