Perfect little camera to take hiking I bought this camera after my daughter broke the door on my older Coolpix. I picked this camera same reason I picked my older one, I wanted a camera that uses AA batteries so I don't have to worry about running out of power during my hikes. My job is a wedding photographer so I know my way around cameras. I use a D700 and a D800 with an old D300 as backup. I used to try go hiking carrying my cameras in a backpack but that gets way to heavy after a while and I found I was too tired to take any pictures once I got anywhere! I go hiking for about 5 hours and always make videos of my journeys. I use a Gopro and my Coolpix to record the hike. I use the Gopro as the main and my Nikon as the second camera BUT, I use the Nikon to capture the most important shots! This camera takes way sharper videos then the Gopro by far. The colors are richer, the contrast is awesome and they are 100x better. Then only reason I don't use it as the main camera is the screw mount is off center and shooting with the screen on drains my batteries too fast. I carry about 12 batteries with me on a hike and I usually use about 4 during my shooting time. I used to get horrible battery life using alcaline batteries. I would drain a battery in 5 minutes doing video. I would have to buy a jumbo pack of batteries and drain them all on a hike.. then I gave up and just used NI-MH batteries and OMG, the battery life is just godly!! The batteries now just last and last! I think they only get "drained" because I use the video too much and the battery overheats lol Photo wise i usually don't take many photos with my camera since I'm doing video. But I noticed when my battery died from shooting video, I can still blast off a ton of photos with the dead batteries! and the pictures come out awesome! I rarely have to do any photo touch ups at all. Just take out memory card and post the pictures online. The zoom is great at 14x optical to really reach out and grab that shot. I love taking bird shots with this camera since i can just carry it in my pocket. Overall I would highly recommend this camera to anyone looking for a great little point and shoot camera. Fact that is uses AA batteries is a bonus! Now I can't only give positives on my review. the negatives I found using this are: alcaline batteries die too fast with this camera I'm scared about the battery door. Its the same door that was on my other coolpix and I'm afraid it will break like the last camera if i bang it. The zoom during video is digital zoom, not optical so as you zoom, the quality of the pictures goes down. To take video, you press a small button on the back to start and stop video. Wish they made it that the big shutter button could start the video since I'm used to pressing that. The audio is either great or horrible. If your far away from a waterfall, its sounds great but if you're close and the noise levels are higher, the video sound is blah.. Same goes for windy days. If the wind is blowing hard, you can't hear anything but the wind so I have to mute that video clip. hope this helps anyone thinking of getting this camera. I love mine!! June 22, 2014
Excellent ! Though its image stabilization is not very good, yet it is a very good camera March 1, 2014
Easy to use Just got the camera for Christmas already know it very well should last many years looking forward to many great photos December 28, 2013
Great Camera I purchased this camera on 9/5 for a concert on 9/20. With only one day to familiarize myself with it, it worked very well and was easy to use. It took some great photos without flash, it is small enough not to be a burden, easy to handle, and the 14X zoom was great! The original batteries that came with it were dead in half an hour, but I replaced them with lithium, which are still going strong. October 1, 2013
Teriffic camera I needed to replace an older camera, a SLR, with all of the bells and whistles, and wanted a camera easy to use, and didn't have to lug around lens and another piece of luggage for my camera equipment. This camera is very easy to use, and creates sharp, clear, outstanding pictures. The viewfinder works perfectly, it just the right size, and the camera fits easily into my pocket, readily available for a picture. I am still exploring all of the features of this camera, and noticed when I was in Mexico, that I went through the few batteries that I brought from home, and wasn't sure as to the life remaining in either of them. Went out and bought the lithium batteries, this was a month ago, and they are still working fine. If you want a very good camera for personal use, that will product crisp, clear, wonderful photos, very easily, I recommend this camera. Learn about all of the features and settings and this Nikon L610 won't disappoint. July 16, 2013

Hi,

Is it possible to use this camera to take photos as the background blur (adjusting field depth), that we used to see in SLR cameras. I guess that is possible by "Focus-area selection" feature of this camera. Can somebody give me more details about this. Is there any limitation for that option, like we've to keep specific distance from the object or background and object should be in some distance etc etc.

I'm planning to buy this camera.

Sony cybershot having a feature called "Background defocus" but that is having limitations. I would like to know more similar features in this camera.

Answer:
The Coolpix L610 is fully automatic, so the settings will adjust depending on the mode the camera is in. To achieving a blur background, manual adjustments are required. This is not possible on this model. You can get a certain amount of this effect by setting your camera to portrait mode and shooting in a bright setting, but you may not always get the effect you desire.
If you would like a camera specifically to create bokeh photography we would recommend using a P range COOLPIX, the Nikon 1 series or a Nikon DSLR. These cameras require a slightly bigger investment, but they do offer more flexibility.

20-30 pictures max per set and that's in auto mode without flash. I've tried duracell alkalines and lithiums with no difference. The camera body gets VERY warm to the touch. Is this normal?

How to take night shots with a tripod?

I recently got a tripod for my camera for steadier pictures at night. When I used the handheld setting for the night landscape, they came out blurry or way too bright and the colors were completely off. I tested the tripod out a little bit, but the pictures came back completely dark. Any suggestions about how to take better night shots?

Answer:
To prevent blurry images while using the tripod, you can turn on the self timer and use it to reduce camera shake. Press Left on the multi selector and select On from the On/Off option.

It is best to shoot night landscape with the L610 during sunset when the light outside is evenly balance instead of shooting when it's completely dark.
Avoid shooting dark scenes with bright light sources in it.

When there are both too bright and too dark areas in your frame, you will end up with an over exposed or under expose image depending on where the focus point is. The camera tries to properly expose whatever the focus point is on and therefore, focusing on the lighter area will cause the brighter area to be over exposed, and focusing on the brighter area will cause the lighter area to be under exposed.

Your photos may not always look perfect in the camera but if you capture the necessary details, you can use a picture editing software to make your photos look perfect.
The L610 PDF manual is in the link below. Night landscape information is on page 40

Answer:
The Flash setting used in Easy-Auto mode is Auto and the setting cannot be change. The flash will fire only if the camera detects that the flash is needed. The camera makes a scene selection from a list of seven ( See page 36) and the flash cannot be used in all scene modes. see page 62 & 63 for more information.
You can manually select a scene mode that permits the use of the flash or select Auto Mode and select the flash settings.
For information about using the flash, in see page 54 and 55 of the L820 manual. PDF link below.
