Great camera for all but, perhaps, professional photogs. I bought my first Nikon 8 years ago with a Coolpix 5700 and I paid $800 for it. I took some really great pics with that one but it only had an 8X Optical zoom. A couple of years ago I bought a Kodak Z981 because it had a 26X Optical zoom. I gave the Nikon CP5700 to my daughter-in-law and she has taken some great shots with it. I was disappointed in the Kodak's ease of use and picture quality so when I saw this P510 for around half what I paid for the 5700 I snapped it up. I am really glad I did because this camera is awesome. So easy to use and the long lens is fantastic. This would be a great choice for some of those surveillance jobs you see in movies and television. I don't think I'll ever leave Nikon again. June 30, 2012
Great zoom, picture detail, ease of use I have several cameras including a Nikon SLR. It is hard to believe that a point and shoot camera like the P510 out performs the SLR. The ease of use, the number of features, the 42 zoom lens, listed as 1000mm and the macro feature are fabulous features. I carry this camera with me as it is small and light weight. It has plenty of manual adjustments and the auto setting works well. The special effects settings work very well and the video is great. If I had one complaint it would be the lack of a remote shutter. June 27, 2012
Great for amatuers and Pro's! I have owned many digital cameras since 2003 and I find that this particular Nikon has everything you need in a digital camera all wrapped up in a neat package. Thanks Nikon for making the LCD display moveable, and thanks for increasing the zoom to 42X yes I said 42X. I take a lot of wildlife photo's and it is ideal to capture my subjects. My former cameras (oh the last 4# were not Nikon's and I thought were wonderful until I saw this one online and it has featres that no other camera had. GPS #built-in#. A large Zoom #42X). Moveable LCS display. Panorama. Movie button. and a powerful grip to hold your camera as you are stoming through the woods or where ever. I am not a professional. I love photography and how it forces me to go out in the wild and shoot. June 24, 2012
Fantastic Camera!! I've been using this camera for about a week. Easy To Use. Nice Pics. June 20, 2012
Fantastic! Perfect size. Love the fact that you can choose the pixels of the photos you want to take. It's a handsome camera. I have the red one. LOVE IT. Pictures are so vivid. The zoom is wonderful. I would give it 1000 starts if they had the option! June 17, 2012
Recommend P510 Nikon Better quality camera than other brands in its class. June 17, 2012
P510 I have had this Camera 4 weeks. It Is my first Nikon my friends love the pictures that I have taken with this Camera. I used it on the AT Trail on a one week hike and I am impressed with the pictures it took June 15, 2012
This is one great 'pro-sumer' digicam I am a Commercial Photographer. I have owned more cameras (& different types) then you want to hear about. I switched to 100% digital in 2000. I currently own a Nikon D-70s & a Nikon D-300, both digital SLR's (+ a # of lenses). I needed a lightweight, but powerful, back-up digicam. + something powerful & dependable to take w/me on vacations. I'm not a fan of back-screen-only pocketable digicams. A long time ago I owned a Nikon 5700, which is the many-generations-earlier model of this camera. It was 5.0 mp & had an 8X zoom. This updated, evolved digicam is fantastic. It incorporates the best features of my old Nikon 5700 (no big mirror box, no mirror shake, no shutter release noise) w/a much more powerful zoom, VR, a multitude of shooting options, a CMOS sensor, all in a light, rugged package. And reasonably priced too. (My Nikon 5700 cost $500 in ~2005) Pros: Excellent (Nikon lens &) picture quality, VR, light weight, reasonably fast focus & shutter release (f/a non-D-SLR), many scene/shooting options, a big, adjustable rear viewing screen, reasonable price, rugged Nikon build quality, handles HDR well & a good solid rubber grip built into the right side of the camera body. Cons: (okay, Nikon, here's my wish list): a stronger, more powerful flash (on-board one is okay, but not great), a hot-shoe (compatable w/Nikon SB flash units), speed up the reasonably quick focus & shutter release, -&- include a battery charger (not as an option) that doesn't require the battery to be charged in the digicam. June 14, 2012
AMAZING!!! This is one of my first cameras that i have owned and i am definitely impressed! This camera has an amazing zoom and i love how many options there are! The ease of controls are very good and overall im in love with this camera!!!! I had used this on my trip to Washington D.C and it has given me amazing pictures that im looking forward to get developed. Nikon has definitely made a good lasting impression on me! June 14, 2012
Great depth and clarity I purchased this fantastic Nikon P510 on 6/9/2012. I purchased it while on a trip in Western South Dakota and took approximately 200 photos before fully setting the camera. When I got home and put the photos on my comuter, I was greatly amazed at the clarity and depth perception. Pro's great photographs and the camera was quicker to respond than I percieved since it was such a large zoom. I shot 200 photos and some with flash and also set up the camera and didn't run out of battery. I was pleased of that for a rechargable camera battery. Worked well on a tripod. I purhcased Con's: A lot of controls and settings, will take time to learn to set the camera to apply to best for the sitiations.I was disapointed the self timer is not available in the pet profile scene, but that is a really small issue. I had one time when I could not get the focus to work, and shut the camera off and it worked correctly. This may have just been a operator error too. I believe the camera fac exceeds my expectations already. The link below won't allow me to upload a photo June 13, 2012
Wonderful Camera "I have had this camera for about two weeks and continue to be very impressed. The zoom is fantastic, the image stabilization works very well and the picture quality is great. The GPS feature works very well and is fun to use. All in all, this is a wonderful camera." June 11, 2012
My first professional camera I am a teen. I just got this camera for my birthday, and it is amazing. I was speechless when I opened the box and the camera amazed me even more with its awesome features. I am an amateur photographer, and I've wanted a dslr for 3 years. My parents gave me this saying they believed it was better than a dslr. All in all, they were right. I love the 120fps video and I am going to start taking REAL pictures so I can make REAL money. June 9, 2012
A Standing Ovation for Nikon! I own a Nikon D90 and various lenses (including 70-300mm VR lens) and love nature and sports photography. I can never get teh bird or coyote close enough. I purchased the Canon SX30 IS. What a waste of money. I spent a LONG TIME cleaning up the digital artifacts and poor quality images to resemble something half-way decent. Then I heard about the Nikon P510 here, read the reviews, and went out to purchase one. I have had it roughly a month but it is amazing. I have used it with nature and other subjects and I am very impressed. Image quality, great zoom and details at the maximum end, excellent colors, what I consider to be a quick shutter, and very easy to navigate in terms of menu and function. The only negative to me is that it only shoots jpeg. I would highly recommend this camera to anyone for any use....except handheld at night or in low light conditions. I could never afford 600-800-1000mm lenses for my D90. This camera gives me the distance and quality to enjoy nature shooting to the fullest! I kick myself every time I look at the $399 Canon Paperweight SX30 I have. Nikon, you ARE digital photography. June 5, 2012
Super price and super capability Some things I use the P510 for I am not sure that Nikon realized were a strong feature. That is the P510's capability of Moon shooting at extreme zoom. I developed the skill of hand-holding at maximun zoom and aiming at the Moon. I discovered this by accident when it got too dark for more zoom test shots. June 3, 2012
Great Camera! I purchased this camera last week and I am really liking it. I have always used Canon cameras in the past but the picture quality has been so much better on this camera. For those of you looking for the manual to it, go to "Service & Support" and then "Download Center" on this website and you will be able to download the manual. I downloaded the manual onto my Nook so that I can have something smaller to carry around to read it on. Great camera and I'm having so much fun trying out all the different settings on it. May 31, 2012
An all in 1 Marvel I do a lot of wildlife photography and I have used a variety of cameras (nikons, canons, fujifilms, Sony and Pentax). This camera is the most cost-effective choice, offering unbelievable zoom, fantastic colour and image clarity as well as being extremely easy to use. In honesty, the images are not as good as those produced by the upper range DSLR cameras , but it's not far off. This is the best option for new photographers and is a great buy for any photographer that cannot afford a 1000mm lens. I have found this camera to be on par with the D3100/D5100/D90 /EOS 60D/600D etc. This camera is great for birding, scenery and fast moving animals. Really is a great buy! May 30, 2012
Best camera, worthy for the excellent zoom and the image quality! Great visit to the Cleveland zoo with the amazing zoom of this camera. I also have a mirrorless Sony, and I have not noticed much difference in quality (except in low light conditions, but the built-in flash in the P510 works really great). Just bought it yesterday, and I already love this camera... a lot of fun! May 26, 2012
Feature Loaded Digital Camera with an Awesome Price Tag! In general, this camera is GREAT! I've had mine for a couple months and used just about all the features. I originally was looking for a camera with GPS build in, and water/ shock/ debris proof/ resistant camera. Although this unit is only build-in GPS, the extra features it has, by far, out weigh the lack of others. Pro: Apparently being able to shoot 30fps at 1080p is a big deal. I have seen my friends DSLRs that are 3x or more, more expensive that do not have this feature. Although this was not a deciding factor for me, it was really a nice added bonus. The 24-1,000mm zoom is beyond amazing. I recently went out for shots of the Supermoon in May/ '12 and was extremely surprised at the detail I could get with such a small unit. It was by far better at viewing, never mind photographing, the moon than my telescope would have ever been. Ridiculous detail at 16.1MP and 1,000mm. The (additional) 2x digital zoom was to much to properly crop the images. It has a build in panorama mode, both 180 and 360 degrees. It works surprisingly well with both high and low contrast lighting. Basically it shoots a short video clip and auto crops a section of it (least I think that's how it works) The macro capability is particularly good. I have been able to get right up close (lens in near contact with subject) and very easily shoot photo's. This is another feature I have used quite a bit, as I love taking up close and personal photo's. And finally, the price. For about $450 out the door, and compared to everything else I've seen, this DC is by far a HUGE bang for your buck. The amount of QUALITY options, and the fact it's a Nikon (I mean, can't go wrong there...right?) was one of the top 5 deciding factors. Cons: Although a loaded camera, some of the features are a bit on the slow side. The GPS fix can take a while, even if in the wide open on a perfectly clear day and the lens is a bit on the slow side. The one thing I would definitely want to change is either add a manual zoom ring or a dual zoom capability with the zoom switch. All to many times already, I have lost a few key photo's from this. (again, though, for the price and other features, this is hardly a big deal). The one thing I truly wish it had was the ability to accept remote shutter switches. Being GPS based and having nice video out options, it would only make sense (to me) to have a remote shutter option of some kind. Be it with other Nikon switches or it's own, something would be nice. All in all, I'm VERY happy with my purchase and have been taking it everywhere with me. Especially on hikes and camping trips. For what it is, I could not recommend it more. May 24, 2012
Awesome lense and wonderful to use Got this camera as a warranty replacement after my P500 had hissy fits. Awesome camera. It is way better than its predecessor, particularly in low light performance. The menu's are structured way better and are more intuitive to use than previously. The lense is exceptional with improvements to an already impressive stabilization system and the macro setting is good also. The colours are rich and vibrant and there is little noise at normal ISO settings unless your being fussy and counting pixels or trying to print a wall hanging. I like the way that you can now assign a function to the previous multishot button making white balance, focus mode or metering available instantly and the white balance adjustment appears better in its application also. Overall this camera is similar to its predecessor but it feels better, takes much better shots, gives the user quite a range of adjustments to massage that 1 in a million photo both pre and post shot. In my opinion it is a better buy than the SX40HS as long as you don't want a hotshoe attachment. Image wise there is little difference between the two and for me the nikons colour reproduction is much better which along with the insanely long focal distance really makes this camera a winner. A longer shutter speed would be a benefit from time to time but hey, you can't have everything in a bridging camera can you. Its video mode appears to capture sound much better which I found the P500 to be very ordinary at and whilst it may not replace a video camera for the old home vids (low light video is a bit of a challenge) it's a handy feature with more than adequate results for most requirements. Great job Nikon Very pleased with my P510 :) May 22, 2012
All I Really Need Ok I came on some hard times and I had to sell my DSLR for $1,500. I love traveling to different locals and taking picture, I love the control of the DSLR. I couldn't give up photography. So I was looking for something with some wiggle room in the settings department and awesome pictures with telephoto type zoom capabilities. I couldn't bee happier with the P510, I know it does't have threading for a UV lens nor a mount for a shoe flash, but for what I use it for, the price and the features of this camera, it's hard to say that this camera is not one of the greatest bang for the buck cameras on the market today. The shear quality of the photos taken are staggering, I'm still playing around with all the modes features and it's a heck of a lot of fun. Thank you Nikon for making an absolutely wonderful camera. Note: This camera does not come with a memory card, I recommend the 64GB Sandisk one, it's simply amazing. Also note that the videos have a limit of 30 mins at a time regardless of the available space you have on the memory card (which I find odd an disappointing). Even though there are the details (as I mentioned) that can be improved upon, this camera is the best out there. May 16, 2012
NO THREADS FOR FILTER!!!!!!! What a great camera. The most incredible zoom in the industry, great pix, wonderful features but wait......... no threads for a filter. More so for lens protection than anything else. Come on Nikon how about an adapter? May 15, 2012
Red Hot Camera This is my first Nikon purchase. I purchased the Nikon Cookpix P510 on May 8, 2012. I am thrilled! It is gorgeous, user friendly and takes awesome photos. Thank you Nikon for making this great advanced point and shoot camera. As a photo enthusiast, I can hardly wait to learn all its features. May 13, 2012
Just bought the P510 Honestly, this isn't your normal 5 star review. I haven't really gotten the chance to play to much with my camera. I'm giving it 5 stars for durability! Only I could drop the camera on cement from about 4 feet in the air before really using it. My stomach dropped, but besides a couple nicks in the plastic, the camera held up completely! I owned a P100 and that had a 26x zoom with 10.3 mp's and I literally got craters in the moon while on full digital focus while on tripod. I can already say that they REALLY improved the image stability while fully zoomed like that with the P510 compared to the P100. (by the way.. make sure you secure the strap properly.. that was my mistake) May 12, 2012
So much fun I bought this camera for many reasons, the red color of the body (beautiful rich color) the zoom is amazing, easy to hold onto, easy features, nice size. I took a picture of a tree in my yard just after it rained, the camera picked up the tiny water droplets on the leaf and the flower, absolutely gorgeous , I am writing this review on my iPad and would upload the picture but not sure how to do that from the iPad. Overall, I love this camera and recommend it to anyone who loves taking pictures. May 12, 2012
Great pictures I purchased this camera 10 days ago. I took the camera to my grandson's baseball game, granddaughter's soccor game, party and holy communion. I shot 334 images in two days plus videos. I was so impressed with the color and quality of the images. It is easy to use and I highly recommend this camera. After seeing the pictures, my daughter went out and purchased the same camera. The zoom is incrediable. This is the best camera that I have ever owned. I have one concern: the battery door latch can easily be opened in normal operations. One recommendation: instructional DVD demonstrating the features and how to maximize the usability of this great equipment. May 9, 2012
Great Macro Shots I got the best Macro shots ever, it is a peace of pure love :) May 4, 2012
Homerun Nikon My Gear: D700, D90, V1, P7100 + great glass. I know my Nikons and the P510 will now become part of my Nikon family. I use each camera for a different purpose and I use the P510 for the 1000mm reach. I live a stones throw from a major international airport, now I can be stealthy. As you know picture taking at airports can get you arrested or at minimum harassed by local security. I waited two months to get the Redondo Beach Red P510 and it was worth the wait. Get it and go have some fun. April 26, 2012
Love this camera Bought this camera for my birthday early this month. I have never had a nice camera before and I am highly uneducated in photography, buy I am slowly learning. I am so glad I bought this camera out of all the other ones, it is a great learning tool. The possibilities with the manual features are immense, but it also does well as an automatic point and shoot. I also really like how easy it is to access all the features in the camera, it makes things way less confusing. I dont have any things i dislike about it yet but if I do I will update. Great purchase, worth every bit I paid for it! April 17, 2012
Great zoom, great quality We've only had the camera a little while. I think the image quality is great. The super zoom is ideal for taking pictures of small objects far away. The image stabilization works very well. I couldn't hold a 10x zoom camera stable enough without image stabilization, and I have no problem with this zoomed all the way. April 16, 2012
great ;;;easy camera to use love the zoom . sometimes i can get better shots than with my dslr. April 13, 2012

Answer:
Those are not threads. They are there just to hold the lens cap. There are some adapters out there however they are either bulky or junk. I myself am waiting for something decent. It seems as though I am not alone on this, just google p510 filter adapter. Hey Nikon how about stepping up with an adapter?

Of course I understand that printers are different, but a little detail on the basic PDF print settings required would be extremely helpful! My goal is to print out the pages in correct order to make a booklet that is printed on standard 8-1/2 x 11 paper, landscape, and would be 5-1/2 x 8-1/2 after folding the sheets in half, or cutting and comb binding them.

Alternatively, could you offer a printed manual at additional cost for those of us who would see the value in that and pay for it?

Thank you!

Answer:
Those are the settings for double sided printing, that's what the booklet subset is for- select both sides and printer will do the rest. If your printer doesn't due double side, pause printing and flip over paper.

Thanks Joe!
One thing not clear: this doesn't print on both sides of the paper, right? So, would I need to print just "front side only" and then turn over and run through again for the back side? Probably reverse order?

Answer:
By default the GPS isn't (or at least wasn't) on...you can turn it off though I'm not sure how much that will help you. I rarely have the GPS on (which does hog the proprietary battery's resources) and don't do much better than your image count with limited use (10-15% of shots) of the flash. Also, the battery indicator doesn't seem to be especially accurate. It goes from full to half and then empty in a very short time frame, with little indicated in between. It's a shame that Nikon couldn't do better with the battery considering where the technology is these days, or at least allow the option for AA battery format so I could actually afford to keep some extra charged batteries in my bag. Not making things any easier is the lack of an external charger that they could have included for a couple of $ more in cost.

The GPS option can be turn Off (default setting is Off). If Record GPS data is set to On while a log is recorded using Create Log, GPS functions even when the camera is turned off and that will take power of your battery.

Answer:
The fact that I cannot attach a filter just killed the camera for my purpose. I was willing to compromise on the screen which cannot be moved in 3 dimensions. To bad.

Many many years ago I loved my coolpix 800 (with filters and additional lens), The coolpix 4300 was not a bad camera either, but the following coolpixes couldn't compare to the Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ28 (which takes filters) I had next... I was hoping this was the camera would be my replacement and my return to Nikon, but it seems not.

Answer:
I would also love to use a polarizing filter. That's one thing that is simply not effective to add post-production. I was all set to purchase this camera until learning filters cannot be used. I will gladly wait til the next version. Seems there are MANY people who want filters judging by the number of times that question has been posted here.

So Nikon - How aboout it?

Answer:
Panasonic FZ seies are but a few P&S cameras left on the market that puts a thread to put filters on their lenses and most are high end stuff. One of the main reasons for doing so is most of the filter effects can be added post edit and also the design reasons. Most P&S in 9xxx, 8xxx, 6xxx, 4xxx, 3xxx series are such that the lens retracts completely, flush with the body. You can't do that when you havea filter hanging off the lens. I suspect they will never put
this feature into any of their P&S cameras. Even mgazoom like P500 and L120, which are similar to Panasonic FZ series do not have them. But lacking a filter thread should not be a deal-breaker for whether you choose to buy Nikon or not.
