Excellent I have compared like cameras for the last two months trying to determine which product to purchase. Having used cameras of friends, I finally decided on the Nikon P-510. The picture quality and performance is unbelievable. I do not regret my purchase and would do this all over again as I believe I have purchased the finest camera in it's class! July 16, 2012
Awesome zoom and fine piictures! This camera is so impressive. The mega zoom is awesome and the pictures taken with the zoom are fine and have the balance and brightness. July 15, 2012
Great Camera with so many extras I have owned so many cameras but this is the best camera. It has everything that a person could want. There are some individuals that don't like the video portion but they just have to learn to use it right.. This camera as special effects when taking pictures that I have enjoyed and used many o them. I look forward to continuing to learn to use more of this camera's options and effects. July 11, 2012
Excellent portability! See's Saturn! I use this camera for reasons that should be done with a DSLR. The zoom helps me get the best picts from a safe distance in a war zone. I use manual settings for most of my shots. I included a picture of Saturn from a dark sky location. I used 1/80 shutter, 7.8 fstop and 1600 ISO on a Manfrotto tripod with a 10 second delay. For a point and shoot to reach out this far, is the reason why I do not have a DSLR and spare zooms. We had a mortor explode close by and the camera fell while attached to the tripod. The tripod 1/4" mount broke off the bottom plastic of the P510, so I epoxied the lower half of the camera back on. I would like to see a few changes in firmware. Allow full 8 sec shutter at any ISO. Add a RAW NEF or JPG choice. Allow digital zoom in Manual mode. Add a bulb function. Allow the screen to dim much more for night astrophotography. Add a finer focus control as the current one moves too course. Finally, make it in Gloss Yellow. July 11, 2012
Moral of the story - Stick with Nikon I've been a Nikon user for the past 25 years and have purchased several Nikon cameras, film and now digital. I recently read the specs of the Canon G1-X and bought it-and then took it back three days later and bought the P510. I was looking for a smaller, but quality-speced camera to use when my Nikon Digital SLR with accessories was too bulky. The most important spec for me was an electronic viewfinder which the P510 has. Everything else is icing on the cake and their's lot of icing - 42x optical zoom, built in GPS, PSA and M modes, 16.1 MP sensor but having an electronic view finder was the big one! Photos are great-a perfect camera for what I was looking for and it's easy to use. July 7, 2012

A time lapse shoot, for example: if the battery would not last for the entire shoot, is it possible to have the camera taking pictures while being charged by the computer?
If it is possible, are there any special USB adapters/cables i would need?

Thanks so much!

I found the answer to my question regarding the use of a filter on the Nikon P510. Apparently from the answer posted on this page by Nikon, this camera lens has not been designed to accommodate a filter. I am quite sure that Nikon didn't accidentally overlook including this capability.

So NIKON, is there a software solution lurking inside the P510 that a user can access to get those beautiful cloud pictures that can result from use of a quality Circular polarizing filter? Or maybe the camera is smart enough to do it through its own automatic internal algorithm design (which I haven't noticed happening) I tried 3 times to upload an example photo but your server just hung for many minutes each time.

P510 GPS feature - Worthless or what?

I've shot about 100 photos so far, out in a wide open area. (Fiesta Island, near Sea World/San Diego), With the camera being used typically, turn it on, take a few photos, let it sleep, turn it on, take a few more..

After a day of this, I have not ONE at all that is GPS tagged.

What's the deal? Come on. the AW100 just works, this thing has real issues.

If you have to leave the camera on full time for the GPS to start to work, then what is the point? The battery will go in real short time.

Even when the GPS claimed to be locked on. I also used the function to set the clock via the GPS and the camera never actually set the time, it just said "Please Wait", after about 10 minutes I just yanked the battery out.

Answer:
GPS tracking typically requires an initial startup period to acquire satellites. This period may vary depending on available satellites and atmospheric conditions. If you experience a connection problem initially, do not move the GPS device for up to 20 minutes under a clear sky to establish connection (may take longer if cloudy). If the device is new or has been moved since last acquisition, it may require time to re-establish connection. Once acquired, subsequent acquisitions should be faster. If the unit has been moved a great distance ( several hundred miles or more ), then re-acquisition of the GPS signal will of course be necessary.

1000mm is not 42X when equated to 35mm film. How did you determine your math?

According to your website this camera is 4.3-180mm (angle of view equivalent to that of 24-1000 mm lens in 35mm [135] format). 2X is twice as large as seen by the naked eye. At 35mm 2X is a 100mm lens. Since your website makes a comparison to 35mm film 42X would be 2100mm using 35mm film. Which of the following is correct:
1. You are getting 42X compared to the sensor size.
2. You are getting 1000mm compared to the senor size.
It does not appear that it could be both only because your website has consciously referenced the 35mm format against this camera.

Answer:
They got the 42X calculation by dividing 1000mm/24mm to get 41.66666. The 42X should not be compared to 10X on binoculars or a 20X spotting scope. If they took a 250mm lens and reduced the sensor to ¼ of 35mm format that would yield 1000mm.
