Excellent
I have compared like cameras for the last two months trying to determine which product to purchase. Having used cameras of friends, I finally decided on the Nikon P-510. The picture quality and performance is unbelievable. I do not regret my purchase and would do this all over again as I believe I have purchased the finest camera in it's class!

Great Camera with so many extras
I have owned so many cameras but this is the best camera. It has everything that a person could want. There are some individuals that don't like the video portion but they just have to learn to use it right..
This camera as special effects when taking pictures that I have enjoyed and used many o them. I look forward to continuing to learn to use more of this camera's options and effects.

Excellent portability! See's Saturn!
I use this camera for reasons that should be done with a DSLR. The zoom helps me get the best picts from a safe distance in a war zone. I use manual settings for most of my shots. I included a picture of Saturn from a dark sky location. I used 1/80 shutter, 7.8 fstop and 1600 ISO on a Manfrotto tripod with a 10 second delay. For a point and shoot to reach out this far, is the reason why I do not have a DSLR and spare zooms. We had a mortor explode close by and the camera fell while attached to the tripod. The tripod 1/4" mount broke off the bottom plastic of the P510, so I epoxied the lower half of the camera back on. I would like to see a few changes in firmware. Allow full 8 sec shutter at any ISO. Add a RAW NEF or JPG choice. Allow digital zoom in Manual mode. Add a bulb function. Allow the screen to dim much more for night astrophotography. Add a finer focus control as the current one moves too course. Finally, make it in Gloss Yellow.

Moral of the story - Stick with Nikon
I've been a Nikon user for the past 25 years and have purchased several Nikon cameras, film and now digital. I recently read the specs of the Canon G1-X and bought it-and then took it back three days later and bought the P510.
I was looking for a smaller, but quality-speced camera to use when my Nikon Digital SLR with accessories was too bulky. The most important spec for me was an electronic viewfinder which the P510 has. Everything else is icing on the cake and their's lot of icing - 42x optical zoom, built in GPS, PSA and M modes, 16.1 MP sensor but having an electronic view finder was the big one! Photos are great-a perfect camera for what I was looking for and it's easy to use.

What is the start-up time for P510 - from on to ready to take a photo?

Answer:
With every release of new product we work to enhance the start up time so the cameras will be faster - not only to start up - but in shot to shot times as well.
I've pre-ordered the P510 in good faith from B&H but wanted to know (and you probably won't want to publish this question) if the image quality has improved. Going to a 16mp sensor doesn't necessarily improve the quality. Photography Blog says of the P500... "the move to a 12 megapixel sensor, despite it still being a back-illuminated CMOS one, hasn't done the P500 any favours. There is simply too much smearing of fine detail in the full-resolution images, even at the lower ISO speeds, with things starting to fall apart at ISO 400 and getting progressively worse as you go up the range."
So what changes have you done anything to improve the image quality over the P500 with the P510? Thanks.
