Ready for extreme adventures

Waterproof, shockproof and freezeproof

The AW100 can handle all that Mother Nature can throw at it. Take it diving to depths of up to 33-feet. Shoot at temperatures as cold as 14° F. And don't sweat drops of up to five feet. Whether it's in your hand, mounted to a surfboard, clipped on a backpack or attached to a scuba tank, every twist, splash, dive and crash can be recorded in both still and Full HD (1080p) movies. Plus, Nikon's new Action Control brings fast and easy operation to gloved hands. The AW100 lets you capture every thrilling moment from inside the action—not the sidelines.

Shoot in extreme low light

16.0 MP CMOS sensor

Adventure doesn't always happen during perfect photo-taking conditions. Imagine sharp images produced 33-feet underwater, photos and movies captured while you explore a dark cave, or snapshots nabbed during that last run just as the sun was setting. What does it take to get these and more? A 16.0 MP CMOS sensor that blazes through low light, fast action and challenging shooting conditions to capture high-impact photos with exceptional image quality and low noise. Shoot three shots in about one second using one-touch control for Full HD (1080p) movies and ensure not a single moment of your action-packed lifestyle is missed.
16-MP CMOS sensor captures great pictures, even in low lighting

Star in your own viral movies

Full HD (1080p) movies with stereo sound

Don't just share some photos with friends, put them inside the action with you. Imagine reliving the downhill snowboarding rush, the incredible view as you hang glide down a 4,000-foot peak or showing your friends exactly what it was like to ”shoot the tube” in Hawaii. Attach the AW100 to your gear, and with a single touch of the control you're creating an in-the-action Full HD (1080p) movie with stereo sound. You'll capture all of life's adventures from a whole new perspective—your own.

Always stay on track with the COOLPIX AW100's built-in GPS

See where you’re going, mark where you’ve been

Built-in GPS, mapping and Electronic compass

Imagine you and a friend are white water rafting down an unfamiliar route. The AW100's rugged waterproof build can take the pounding action while you record photos and movies of this incredible adventure. Use the built-in GPS to track progress with Nikon View NX2 software, NIkon's myPicturetown® photo sharing site or Google Earth™. A built-in map lets you view your path, and the Electronic compass is an extra safety measure that can even help you ascertain which branch to take if there's a fork in the stream. Your geo-tagged photo travelogue will give you bragging rights as you share the adventure with your friends.

More creativity at your fingertips—even if your fingertips are enclosed in ski gloves! The AW100's handy Action Control feature makes it easy to adjust specific camera settings. All weather camera, goes everywhere, easy to use My AW-100 has been in the back pocket of my cycling jersey for hundreds of bicycle rides over thousands of miles. It's the camera that is there when I want it. Easy to use, takes a good picture or 1080p movie on a moments notice. November 4, 2013
Rugged enough for my work. Haven't utilized camera yet, but it appears to have the features I need. October 3, 2013
Excellent for the Outdoors person I love this camera! It is great for hiking, kayaking and camping. Takes great outdoor shots and HD is excellent. This camera in NOT recommend for indoor shots, it has a very bright flash. Which is better near the campfire. But for the avid outdoor trekker, it a great companion to capture those events with great pics and HD video. August 20, 2013
Easy to take wonderful pictures We just returned from a 6 week National Park tour of Southwest America. I took over 600 pictures and was very happy with the quality and ease of use. It works well in all lights and distances. It is easy to carry while hiking and fits well in a small pocket on the motorcycle. My friends were amazed with the beautiful pictures. June 25, 2013
great camera! but very rarely it does fog up. 5 stars!(: this is the most epic camera i have ever owned! it is full hd and is super cool because if you go to the options for what type of camera taking option you want, (most users don't know this!) you can put in this slo-mo thing! it is so cool and i can't wait to use it this summer! I've read the manual and seen the materials on this website, but I'm unable to find out exactly what the underwater mode does. Does it affect the white balance? What are the features/benefits of the underwater mode?

I keep my AW100 in Auto mode. Will it switch to underwater mode automatically? My guess is no, since I was able to zoom the camera while snorkeling when in auto mode.

this is overview...

The AW100 automatically adjusts camera settings. And if you're looking to add creativity, select in-camera effects such as black and white, or selective color. There's even an underwater mode to keep images colorful and properly exposed.

I would imagine when u set it to underwater effect...it increases color due to lack of colors without alot of sunlight underwater and due to lack of light, it sets exposure to deal with low light and possibly adjusts the shutter speed for low light...this is only my opinion and thoughts reflecting what I read here...

hope that helps...

How to keep fog from developing inside of the lens cover

I find that fog often develops inside the space between the lens and the plastic covering. A friend who has the same camera is having the same problem. There is no way to access this space. 1) how can I get rid of this fog (not always present), and 2) how do I keep fog from developing in the future? This is the only problem that I am having with this camera. I am at the sea shore, but it happens both while out on the water (sea), as well as when on dry land. It is not sustained any internal water seepage from underwater shots. this seems to be an independent problem. It may be due to temperature fluctuations, However, I do not know how to get this inaccessible space free of the potential for fog. There is no clear moisture present, and often it is fog free, and all seems fine, and then you go to take a picture or movie and find this inner space covered with fog.

Answer:
The operation of this camera has been tested at temperatures from 14F to 104F. Before use you need to keep the camera in a warm place before use. If the cover is closed when the inside is wet, this could cause condensation or malfunction.
To clear the Fog:
- Open the battery-chamber slot cover after turning off the camera in a place where the ambient temperature is stable (avoid any place that has high-temperature, humidity, sand or dust).
- Remove the battery and memory card, and leave the camera with the chamber slot cover open to allow the camera to adjust to the ambient temperature.

Answer:
Hi
First, I do not work for Nikon...only contribute to answers in forum if I can help...
Nikon has proven throughout the years to be one of the top two camera manufacturers in the world.
Personally I own 7 Nikon cameras, one of the first point and shoot digital cameras made by Nikon, 4 point and shoot or compact cameras, a D70, N65 (film) and a D2X...have owned since 1999...The only failure I have had was with first digital compact and it failed because my child sat on it and literally crushed it to pieces.
This being said , I have had questions and issues with some of my Nikon cameras...although due to my own ignorance, and Nikon replaced and adjusted things for me when there really wasn't a problem at all, it was my not understanding ...
I would personally have no worries if they have worked out the first issue for you...I can say from years of experience with Nikon, they are here to make the best quality and functional products on the market.
This is not to say that all manufacturers do not have some issues from time to time. I have been here reading and answering questions for some time now and honestly , yours is the first I read about AW100 failing, and other models I have seen with some issues, but seems all are corrected to customer satisfaction within first attempt to correct problem.
I can fully understand your hesitation, but I would be confident that the issue has been taken care of and you can enjoy many years ahead with reliable camera...
Hope this helps and inspires some confidence .

Is there going to be a new firmware update coming out soon that will allow the Action Control to be turned off?

This is one of the only things I find somewhat annoying with the camera because living in Florida I don't have to wear thick gloves and mostly find myself using the camera while diving or outside and having it flip back and forth between pictures while in playback mode is troublesome even with the sensitivity turned down. Simply just include an off or 0 level to stop this and I'll be extremely happy!!

Answer:
4 GB of memory at a rate of about 5 minutes per gig will net you about 20 minutes. The camera will allow 4gb or 29 minutes of recording, whichever comes first.

There are times the illuminator causes the subject eyes to close before the picture is taken. It is necessary to turn it off, but it seems impossible to prevent it from turning on.
