Very satisfied with the AW100 I live on Maui so naturally, much of our activity is in the water. When my Golden Retriever was diagnosed with cancer, I wanted to make sure I had some "in the water" pictures of her from close up rather than always having distance photos from shore. I did some quick research and then bought the AW100. I haven't had the time to really explore using all the different settings so I've been using the easy mode - letting the camera decide what setting to use. The way I've been using it in the water means that sometimes it's underwater and then above the surface. I can see the indicator showing "underwater" until the water drips off the lens/sensor. Even so, I think the results are great. I've also seen great results from the "dry land" photos I've taken. For such a small and relatively inexpensive camera, this thing does a great job. Nikon quality we love! Bought a Fugi and used it once because it filled with water the first time it was taken under water! So back it went and I purchased a name that is trusted in the photography world and I am certainly glad I did! The Nikon AW100 takes beautiful pictures and video. I just love how easy it is to use and there is no doubt that you can go swimming with it! I highly recommend this camera for backyard or beach or anywhere in between! It was one less thing I had to worry about on vacation because I knew the pictures would come out great! June 14, 2012
Don't leave home without it This camera was purchased to augment a Nikon D7000; a small camera to take along when the SLR is left at home. The HD video and crisp photo capability of the same 16MP chip in both cameras does not disappoint with the AW100! The manual could be a bit clearer on all the features, especially the menu navigation. May 29, 2012
Best Compact Digital Camera Let's start with the good. It takes great pictures and video, even under water. It takes the best pictures of any compact digital camera I've owned. But the ability to shoot underwater is why we got it, and those pictures are amazing. We took both still pictures and video, and they both came out great. The Easy Auto mode figures out the most common scenes, and it automatically switches to underwater mode. We started taking video above the water, then went under the water (and the camera automatically switched to Underwater mode), then went back above the water. The video came out great. However, you can't change most of the settings from Easy Auto mode. The Auto mode (strangely enough) is where you can change most of your settings. But the strangest thing is all the scene types you can choose - you have normal things like Portrait and Landscape, but you also have specialty scenes like Food, Sunset, and Fireworks. They each make the appropriate settings automatically so the intent is you don't have to mess with the settings. I've only tried a couple of these, including the very cool Pet Portrait), and they all came out great. The GPS feature is nice, but you can accomplish nearly the same thing by tagging your pictures manually with your location. It does cause the battery to wear down much quicker though, so I usually leave this off. The side button can either display the map, or provide a menu. The map doesn't do anything with the GPS turned off, but it's the only place to access the GPS menu. In the menu mode, you have to tilt the camera left and right or forward and back to change the settings. This doesn't work easily (for me) and I just found it very silly. So I leave it in map mode. The other thing I didn't like was that the default setting for Auto Focus is to focus once. This is not what you expect from a digital camera, and especially not for a video camera. You can change it to full-focus where it is constantly refocusing. This is more natural for me and especially for video. Single focus seems especially silly for video, but since I was able to change this, it wasn't a problem. Overall, this is, by far, the best compact digital camera I've ever owned. I highly recommend it. May 23, 2012
Pleasantly surprised This is the second underwater camera I have owned. The other one was a Olympus Stylus 770SW. The Olympus died on me in early April. I was thinking buying another Olympus, when I checked out the Nikon AW100. I decided to buy Nikon because it seemed a better camera than the Olympus Stylus Tough 8010 14MP Digit al Camera or Olympus ToughTG-1 iHS. In the end I am glad I bought the Nikon AW100. It has been a month now and I am glad to say I made a good choice. May 16, 2012

Answer:
The places on the camera where any strap will attach have very small holes so only a very thin string can fit through. I've read many reviews of various brands of floating straps and many people have lost their camera because that string that attaches the floating part to the camera broke.

I'm guessing that these people who lost their camera had the strap around their arm or wrist and were not holding on to the camera itself while swimming. I've done the same thing when I used to buy those disposable Kodak underwater cameras that use a heavy duty rubber band for a strap.

Since I plan to actually hold the camera in my hand while snorkeling or taking pictures in the surf, I wanted the extra protection of a wrist strap. The wrist strap that got the best user reviews - concerning the strength of the thin string part that attaches to the camera itself - was the Nikon AN-CP19 Replacement Strap. It's available at Amazon for $5.95 as of this writing.

Answer:
The camera will sink but you can purchase a floating strap so if you let go of it while in the water it will float by the strap. I recommend buying a bright colour so if the camera happens to get away from you, you'll be able to spot it from afar.

I'm wondering if there is a time limit or frame size limit when shooting video at higher Fps? it says up to 240fps, but what video size is that at? 1080, 720? and can you only shoot at higher FPS for a set amount of time, like 30sec or something? also can you use exposure lock to lock exposure when shooting video?

On a previous question one of the members of the staff stated "Approved memory cards for the AW-100 are SanDisk, Toshiba, Panasonic and Lexar". According to an Amazon reviewer, the Lexar 128GB SDXC (Class 10) card did not work with the Nikon Coolpix AW100. Is there a limit on the capacity (GB) of the memory cards for the Nikon Coolpix AW-100?

Answer:
I tried the Lexar 128GB SDXC without knowing the reference made on Amazon. I didn't even get a chance to TRY and format it in the camera. A message popped up and said "This card cannot be used." That's unfortunate, but I read a reference in one of the OTHER posted questions here, that card write times slow down as they get full. If that's the case, maybe it's better to go with several smaller cards? Just a thought.

Answer:
Actually the map detail in camera is pretty limited. Mine doesnt show interstate route numbers. The detail comes from using the METADATA and plotting it on a more comprehensive map like google earth. In theory, as long as you have that data, (which is provided by the GPS sats), then it should work......even in China! :)

Answer:
This problem means that there is a little moisture inside the camera. When the battery gets warm, the moisture is converted to vapor which then condenses on the cool lense. Try this:
1) Put some rice in a bowl.
2) Cover the rice with a paper towel.
3) Open up all of the openings (battery compartment, memory slot) on the camera and place it on the paper towel.
4) Put the bowel with the rice and the camera into a sealed plastic bag.
5) Let stand for 3 days.

The rice will absorb all of the moisture and the problem should go away. Be very sure that the camera is always completely dry before ever opening up the battery or memory compartment.

Answer:
This is right out of the camera's manual

"Notes on waterproof and dustproof performances
The camera is equivalent to IEC/JIS waterproof grade 8 (IPX8) and IEC/JIS dustproof
grade 6 (IP6X) and enables shooting pictures underwater at a depth of 10 m (33 ft)
for up to 60 minutes.*
This rating does not guarantee the waterproof performance of the camera or that
the camera will be free from damage or trouble under all conditions.
* This rating indicates that the camera has been designed to withstand the specified water pressure
for the specified period of time when the camera is used according to the methods defined by
Nikon."

If you haven't purchased to camera yet, go to the Nikon Info page for the camera and click on the SUPPORT tab then click on the DOWNLOAD MANUAL icon and read the manual to get familiar with what you want to buy. I've done that for every Nikon product I've bought.

It does not float but there are numerous straps you can purchase that will float. Do a search for Coolpix AW100 floating straps, they are inexpensive.

Answer:
I would say you have 50/50 chance of not working,
These things should not be wet , period...
All you can do is try after they dry out... use a can of compressed air to dry to blow out excess water and give them some time to be good n dry...

Answer:
I have used mine to just track my route using the GPS and after all day, it barely even registers that it used any battery power. If it is only lasting 4 hours without taking photos, that is definetly an issue. If you are taking 200 photos in 4 hours, then thats probably correct. Extra batteries are only $20 at staples. Stock up!

Answer:
You will need 2 hours and 30 minutes in order to have a fully charge battery. Battery Life may vary depending on shooting interval and length of time menus and images displayed, zoom adjusted with each shot, flash fired, and video recording.

Hello,

I am hoping to use this as an underwater capable backup for my D300 on a trip to the Galapagos, and was wondering if any underwater strobes would be compatible with the AW 100. Thanks!

The new AW100 is not compatible with any of our Speedlights. It has a built-in flash. We cannot guarantee the operations of our camera with third party products (you will need to get in contact with them for compatibility information with our products).

The maximum movie length for a single movie is 4 GB or 29 minutes, even when there is sufficient
