Very satisfied with the AW100 I live on Maui so naturally, much of our activity is in the water. When my Golden Retriever was diagnosed with cancer, I wanted to make sure I had some "in the water" pictures of her from close up rather than always having distance photos from shore. I did some quick research and then bought the AW100. I haven't had the time to really explore using all the different settings so I've been using the easy mode - letting the camera decide what setting to use. The way I've been using it in the water means that sometimes it's underwater and then above the surface. I can see the indicator showing "underwater" until the water drips off the lens/sensor. Even so, I think the results are great. I've also seen great results from the "dry land" photos I've taken. For such a small and relatively inexpensive camera, this thing does a great job. Nikon quality we love! Bought a Fugi and used it once because it filled with water the first time it was taken under water! So back it went and I purchased a name that is trusted in the photography world and I am certainly glad I did! The Nikon AW100 takes beautiful pictures and video. I just love how easy it is to use and there is no doubt that you can go swimming with it! I highly recommend this camera for backyard or beach or anywhere in between! It was one less thing I had to worry about on vacation because I knew the pictures would come out great! June 14, 2012
Don't leave home without it This camera was purchased to augment a Nikon D7000; a small camera to take along when the SLR is left at home. The HD video and crisp photo capability of the same 16MP chip in both cameras does not disappoint with the AW100! The manual could be a bit clearer on all the features, especially the menu navigation. May 29, 2012
Best Compact Digital Camera Let's start with the good. It takes great pictures and video, even under water. It takes the best pictures of any compact digital camera I've owned. But the ability to shoot underwater is why we got it, and those pictures are amazing. We took both still pictures and video, and they both came out great. The Easy Auto mode figures out the most common scenes, and it automatically switches to underwater mode. We started taking video above the water, then went under the water (and the camera automatically switched to Underwater mode), then went back above the water. The video came out great. However, you can't change most of the settings from Easy Auto mode. The Auto mode (strangely enough) is where you can change most of your settings. But the strangest thing is all the scene types you can choose - you have normal things like Portrait and Landscape, but you also have specialty scenes like Food, Sunset, and Fireworks. They each make the appropriate settings automatically so the intent is you don't have to mess with the settings. I've only tried a couple of these, including the very cool Pet Portrait), and they all came out great. The GPS feature is nice, but you can accomplish nearly the same thing by tagging your pictures manually with your location. It does cause the battery to wear down much quicker though, so I usually leave this off. The side button can either display the map, or provide a menu. The map doesn't do anything with the GPS turned off, but it's the only place to access the GPS menu. In the menu mode, you have to tilt the camera left and right or forward and back to change the settings. This doesn't work easily (for me) and I just found it very silly. So I leave it in map mode. The other thing I didn't like was that the default setting for Auto Focus is to focus once. This is not what you expect from a digital camera, and especially not for a video camera. You can change it to full-focus where it is constantly refocusing. This is more natural for me and especially for video. Single focus seems especially silly for video, but since I was able to change this, it wasn't a problem. Overall, this is, by far, the best compact digital camera I've ever owned. I highly recommend it. May 23, 2012
Pleasantly surprised This is the second underwater camera I have owned. The other one was a Olympus Stylus 770SW. The Olympus died on me in early April. I was thinking buying another Olympus, when I checked out the Nikon AW100. I decided to buy Nikon because it seemed a better camera than the Olympus Stylus Tough 8010 14MP Digit al Camera or Olympus ToughTG-1 iHS. In the end I am glad I bought the Nikon AW100. It has been a month now and I am glad to say I made a good choice. May 16, 2012

When I press the button just above the "ok" button, this should bring up the five flash modes (Auto, red-eye reduction, off, on, and slow). But I only have "Auto" and "On". Could I have a setting that needs to be changed? I just bought this camera new from best buy, so I assume it was set to default settings so I'm confused. Could it be that this particular camera is just a lemon?

Answer:
The depth limit is for the camera whether it is on or off. The 33ft limit is the depth at which the seals are rated and while it is true that the moving seals should withstand a higher pressure (greater depth) if not actuated, static seals such as those assoicated with the memory card, camera body etc. must still be considered. Consider also that the deeper you go, the more likely it is that excessive motion or a bump will provide the extra bit of force necessary to breach a seal. Finally, there is also a structural integirity issue. As you go deeper the camera experiences greater deformation forces..the body will bend and flex. This bending can also diminish the inegrity of the seals. In short, don't exceed the depth limit and expect everything to be fine. You might get lucky, but I wouldn't rely on it.

The reference manual says that the camera uses PTP to transfer photos. Since this protocol can be used to do other things (such as having a laptop release the shutter), I was wondering how much of the protocol is supported by this camera. Quick experiments have shown that the camera can release the shutter if the quality is set to 12MP.

Answer:
Saltwater is OK and this camera works great for snorkeling. However, I would avoid scuba use because it is too easy to exceed the depth limits. As with any item taken into saltwater, after each use this camera should be washed thoroughly in clean fresh water... Try to avoid allowing saltwater to dry on the camera. As with any underwater camera, do not jump into the water holding the camera as the pressure associated with impact can breach the seals. Do not take the camera into a hot tub.

Answer:
First I highly suggest purchasing a FLOAT Wristband, so if you drop the camera it does NOT go to the bottom, the strap that comes with the camera is awful and it will break when wet. Second, once you come out of the water RINSE the camera in fresh cool water, then pat dry. IF YOU DON"T the salt could cause the gaskets to rot. DONOT open any part of the camera until you rinse and the camera is TOTALY DRY.
Remember to set to the icon of the little fish for underwater and I ALWAYS use the flash. YOUR MANUAL on the CD goes into detail on how to maintain your camera for snorkeling or diving.

ONCE AGAIN GET A PROPER FLOATATION WRISTBAND, NIKON DOES NOT MAKE THEM. I use the SEALIFE Item SL920 FLOAT Srap. They have many other you can chose from.

Answer:
The latitude and longitude reside in the metadata of the image. Any image editing program that allows you to view the metadata should let you see the GPS information. Nikon View NX 2 features a map view that lets you see where on a map the images you photographed with GPS info. are located. The GPS data resides with each individual image or movie file.

I am trying to take pictures of auroras and figure that if I can play around with exposure time, I won't have to set the iso to 3200 and end up with grainy photos

Answer:
The GPS is built-in and can be turn Off and On at any time. If you’re looking for an underwater camera without this feature you may want to check the COOLPIX S30.
