great digital camera! Great point and shoot camera in any condition! the zoom together with the wide angle lens and the amazing stabilazer help to get very good pictures. December 31, 2011
Great point and shoot I am used to SLR cameras and took a long time to decide on this camera. At first it frustrated me in that I couldn't get the closeups I wanted and the zoom wasn't what I was used to. However that it is totally unfair to try and compare a point and shoot with an SLR as there just isn't much comparison between the two. On its own merits as a point and shoot this is a great camera and all the settings help create really good pictures. When I stopped trying to compare apples and oranges I found I really liked this camera. December 7, 2011
Excitement in a small package. I am extremely pleased with my CoolPix S9100. The last camera I purchased was a Nikon F2 and obviously I am somewhat behind the times. However, it didn't take long for me to realize the possibilities the S9100 has to offer me. Moon glow, Sepia Tones, Black and White-what fun! Nikon was my first choice many years ago and I know it will fulfill my current expectations. Many thanks. December 5, 2011
This is by far the best point and shoot camera I have ever owned! I don't even know where to begin but if you're looking for a solid camera that is point and shoot you cannot go wrong with this. I cannot wait to travel and take some awesome photos with this camera. I am a novice when it comes to photography and this camera is easy to use and has some great features. I upgraded from an older Cannon AS1000 and this blows it out of the water. November 27, 2011
Great compromise! I bought this camera to carry instead of my Nikon DSLR when size and weight are at a premium. First I tried an L150 - enjoyable, but still too large for casual carrying. Now my S9100 is my favorite knock around camera. Love the 18X zoom. Love the built in flash. Even the V1 doesn't have all that! Wish it had AA batteries instead of a charger, but I'll just have to work around that. All in all, the S9100 is my go to camera for travel and candid photos. Fun! November 26, 2011
A great product in a Small Box I beleive that this is the best camer in this price range and the best product made by NIKON. Photo results are excellent with minimum effort. November 19, 2011
OUTSTANDING MY WIFE NEEDED A SIMPLE CAMERA TO USE AFTER DOING MY HOMEWORK ON WHICH CAMERA TO BUY,I BOUGHT THE S9100.IT IS AS SIMPLE TO USE AS THE VIDEO I SEEN.DO NOT NEED FLASH.JUST LET THE CAMERA DO ALL THE WORK.IF MY WIFE JUST WANTS TO SHOOT PICTURES, ITS AS SIMPLE AS PUSHING THE BUTTON. SHES LOVES IT !. I LOVE IT.I OWN THE, D-5000,AND I AM JEALOUS. November 16, 2011
Compact, Complete, Convenient The CoolPix S9100 is an excellent camera. It's easy to carry in your shirt pocket, so you can take it anywhere. It shoots in semi-lit environments and brightens up the photograph at the same time. The pictures come out very sharp and colorful. I not only recommend the camera I recommend you print the complete S9100 manual as it contains information on features you wouldn't even think of. November 15, 2011
Lots of features in a very small package I bought the S9100 to supplement my D90. Wanted something with most of the features of the D90 that I could keep in my pocked as we toured areas on vacation where I wanted to remain as unobtrusive as possible. Great zoom. Very good in low light where flash was not permitted. Sharp pictures. November 14, 2011
Great Camera! Easy to use, great zoom capabilities, many functions and wonderful picture quality. October 21, 2011
S9100 is one fantastic camera The S9100 does everything i have asked it to do. The camera is excellent in family, sunset/sunrise, macro, landscape and wildlife photos. This is now my travel camera plus my go everywhere camera. Thanks Nikon for a well designed camera. October 17, 2011
best camera I have ever owned I was on vacation and my fuji camera broke, I thought my camera took the best, most clear pictures I had ever seen UNTIL I bought my Nikon Coolpix 9100. Every photo looks amazing, it picks up all the true colors with all the details. LOVE LOVE IT. October 10, 2011
Great Features! Nikon gets a "High Five" on this camera! Be sure to familiarize yourself with it, we are still learning all of the great features. It is user friendly once you become acquainted with them. Otherwise just use it on auto but don't sell it short and not check into all of the options that you have to take great pics with it. The macro setting is awesome! October 8, 2011
Powerful little camera that fits in my pocket I have owned this camera for about a week, and I an totally satisfied with it. The focal range of this lens is fantastic. Low light performance is great, and I love the auto panorama and macro features September 26, 2011
Terrific zoom range Awesome zoom range in a small camera. I like the auto settings for my wife and the fact I can manually select the settings when I prefer. September 12, 2011
S9100 IS INDEED COOL! AFTER MUCH RESEARCH, I AM HAPPY TO HAVE MADE THE DECISION TO PURCHASE THE COOLPIX S9100. IT HAS ALL THE THE FEATURES I, WAS LOOKING FOR IN A SMALL COMPACT CAMERA. THE 18X OPTICAL ZOOM AND THE HD1080 MOVIE MODE SOLD ME ON THIS CAMERA. MY PREVIOUS CAMERA HAD A 4X ZOOM, AND THE DIFFERENCE IS OUTSTANDING. THE STEREO SOUND IS VERY ADEQUATE AS WELL. I HAD EXPERIENCE USING NIKON CAMERAS IN THE PAST, SO I FELT VERY CONFIDENT ABOUT CHOOSING THIS PRODUCT. I HAD OCCASION TO CALL NIKON ABOUT A FEW THINGS THAT WERE NOT CLEAR TO ME, AND THE NIKON REPRESENTATIVE WAS EXTREMELY COURTEOUS, AND HAD AN IMMEDIATE ANSWER AND SOLUTION FOR ME. THE CALL WAS ANSWERED PROMPTLY, AND I DID NOT HAVE TO WAIT AT ALL TO MAKE CONTACT WITH THE NIKON REPRESENTATIVE. September 12, 2011
Takes very sharp photos and zoom extremely far. Takes almost as good of pictures as my SLR. Love it! September 5, 2011
Great! Very nice, and easy to use!!! I had nother brand, and you cant get anything thats moving. This one has no problem:) September 5, 2011
I love it! I haven't had it long enough to try out ALL of the features but so far it exceeds my expectations. The 18X Zoom is spectacular for a camera this small! It focuses accurately & then shoots exceptionally fast. All of the pre-set "scenes" work very well. Basically as I said in my summary "I love it"! Rodco August 30, 2011
Excellent buy! We take lots of cruises, and this one is the perfect point and shoot. It's simple to use, makes great picts, and reasonable priced! the only drawback was they don't have a NIKON holder for the 9100, I had to buy an after market, darn it! August 23, 2011
Great point and shoot! My wife & I travel on a motorcycle a lot and this camera is the perfect choice. It is compact and easy for my wife to use while riding. The photo's turn out great. August 15, 2011
Excellent camera. The Nikon s9100 is a fabulous camera. I have the Nikon d300, Nikon d3100 and the Nikon s610. I prefer the Nikon s9100 for its ease of use and wonderful results. It powers up fast for the shot you do not want to miss. The video is outstanding and offers surprising versitility like slow motion. Thank you Nikon for a wonderful camera. August 8, 2011
A GREAT CAMERA! I upgraded from an Casio Exilim camera. This COOLPIX S9100 has much better zoom, quality of picture, and overall functionality. I am one Happy Cameraman! August 8, 2011
Great The camera is very responsive, excellent in low light, great outdoors. August 1, 2011
I previously had a coolpix s220 with 3x zoom. The thing that drew me to the s9100 was the great zoom (18x). I couldnt wait to use it and see what it could do. It worked great, zoomed far and came out clear. On the other hand, the close-ups are also very good. The other thing was that it could take good pictures in the dark and it can, without the flash. it even has a nightime setting that brightens the picture a little. The selective color feature is so fun for me to use. the other effects are great too. I love this camera and hope that it doesnt 'lock up' like the other reviews say. July 26, 2011
Review of Nikon S9100 I purchased the S9100 on 5 July, and love the style and features offered on the S9100, and the solid feel of the camera. However, the tiny covers to access battery/memory card work great with the forward/backward lever, but other accesses are extremely small, and the plastic seems fragile. Difficult for Senior Citizens. Issues. The on-line 238 pages of instructions are absolutely overwhelming! And the script in the quite small instruction book provided, is too small, and required enlarging for this owner to read. Issue. Regretfully, I have from the first use had problems with the camera, but appears to be a problem with the memory card provided by the store from which it was purchased. When working with the outstanding Nikon representative (phone), and directed to remove the memory card, it would not release. It was surmised that quite possibly the pictures are blurry because seemingly one of the four recommended memory cards was not provided with the sale. This is supposition at this time . Once the above issues with the pictures are either reconciled, or the camera replaced, I am hoping to overcome the problems and look forward to using this magnificent camera. It came highly recommended through my son, by a professional photographer. Bottom Line. I am anxious to start making many memories with this beautiful camera. Pictures are not provided because they are blurry, and not representative of Nikon. When you buy the S9100 and should a memory card come with it, PLEASE check with your Nikon representative BEFORE you attempt to install, as it quite possibly may become a problem if it is not one of the recommended four cards. July 25, 2011
good value, quality optics, user friendly The S9100 offers an excellent "grab and go" alternative to my DSLR. The creative options, modest size and ease of changing shooting modes makes it convenient to carry S9100 all the time for those unexpected photo opportunities. As I have come to expect from Nikon, the S9100 hosts sharp optics within it's extensive telephoto range . I have demanded a lot from my cameras over the years and the S9100 has not disappointed me. July 18, 2011
Great pictures I've only had my camera for about 2 wks, still trying it out. So far the thing I like most it that it is convienient to travel with. I like to be able to just throw it in my bag and go! This was the reason I purchased this camera. I have another Nikon but it's bigger, more lenses to carry etc. The pictures come out great, the zoom is great and I just love it. I still have not used all the features but will soon. Thanks Nikon! July 12, 2011
Love the camera It does what it says. Easy to use and take great pictures. I was surprised at the amount of detail it captures. I was able to blowup the pictures really large without detrament to the image. July 8, 2011
Excellent Little Camera Looking for a small pocket camera? This is worth a look. Fast, accurate, easy to use, high quality pictures, excellent battery life. The S9100 has it all. July 5, 2011

Answer:
Same issue started a few months ago, of course right after my warranty expired. On last trip a week ago finally when trying to focus, the LCD screen "crashed" and read system failure. When turning it back on it worked again but was able to replicate failure a couple times. Camera is extremely slow to actually snap the picture after holding the shutter halfway down. What are the alternatives Nikon?

Answer:
It gives blurry pictures and the problem is with the sensors and the software. The software scans for the most appropriate focal length thru a range of distances, when the shutter is half pressed and choses the optimum distance for the user to click to get a sharp picture. Some how the software does not stop the lens at the correct focal distance and hence the blurry pictures. This happens especially at close ups and low light. Nikon does not want to fix this bug.

Answer:
I think a firmware upgrade is really required for this product. The features are good and at times the picture quality is good. But most times, it comes up with unpredictable results. For a amateur photographer like me who uses auto mode all the time, this camera has been a big disappointment. Pictures are blurry, skin color reproduction not good etc. and answers to my queries to Nikon support who suggested a few things didn't help. My previous cameras which included a sony and pentax which were 5 and 10 years old had produced better results.

My S9100 has the same problem. Especially at high zoom levels, the focus just goes back and forth and refuses to lock on. It appears to really have problems locking onto performers moving around on stage during a concert.

Answer:
Yes, 720p and 480p (and a lot of other formats) are supported by this camera. I have it myself. The reason why it only lists 1080p in the specs is because Nikon's specs pages only list the highest quality camera and video modes.

You can supplement with an Eye Fi card, however, which has some GPS features (make sure it's rated 6 or above). I've not tried the GPS features, but have been pleased to be able to upload my photos as I take them without having to connect to a computer (either all of them or just ones I "protect"--favs).

The new Coolpix models were release at the beginning of February and it’s usually available after 30 to 45 days. You may want to check with your local dealer or keep visiting our Nikon store.

Answer:
Nikon operates factories all across the globe and each operates to the same high standard. While individual cameras are marked with their country of manufacture we can't make a blanket statement about which camera is produced where.

Autofocus Problems?

Are there known issues with autofocus on this camera? Will a firmware update be available to fix/improve autofocus? I bought this camera on Wednesday and took it on a weekend family event and it was just short of unusable indoors. I was using out of the box settings although I eventually adjusted the autofocus options some, to no avail. It would just attempt to focus for infinity and the only way I could get it out of its vaporlock would be to either power off/on or tap the zoom control one way or another. And that wasn't a guarantee that it would work at that point versus going right back into vaporlock. Outdoors it was naturally better but it still happened fairly often. And even the "focused" photos indoors weren't really great.

I am planning to return this camera to Best Buy soon unless you can provide a reason not to. I'm certainly not expecting miracles here, just basic "higher quality" point-and-shoot functionality. I have a Canon DSLR but just wanted something compact to take snapshots and video with and do macro-photos that the Canon doesn't handle very well. I have an old Sony p&s digital that takes better photos, quite honestly.

Answer:
I don't understand where to get the firmware for the S9100 especially since the first post of this forum says there is no firmware update... Is this something posted since that statement was made? I know there's a significant firmware upgrade for the P7000 which is maybe where the confusion comes in. This question is for the S9100 so is there an upgrade or not? When I check the support areas, I see nothing offered.

Answer:
have you upgraded the firmware to v1.1? this makes a very big difference in terms of autofocus and also write times for raw images. i won't say it is perfect afterwards, but you should do the firmware upgrade before making a final decision. i find that for the way i use a p&s camera that the p7000 does the job, with the known weaknesses...i kept it instead of a g12 which i was using at the same time. the g12 is definitely snappier, but i like the extra reach and some of the features on the nikon...
