AF-S Teleconverter TC-20E III 4.2 5 13 13
Just a wonderful addition to my camera bag I shot the foto, below, of the moon mid day, useing my Nikon D800 and my Nikon 70-200 VR 2.8 Series 1 lens, and useing the AF_STC20E 111 Tele Converter, the results truly are stellar....... April 23, 2014
BUY IT ! Purchased a refurbished sample from my favorite store in NYC. Excellent teleconverter for 70-200 f/2.8 G lens, at least when paired with my D3s. Extremely sharp and fast focusing. I have even gotten good results in the 1.2x format (480 mm) and DX setting (600 mm) hand held but typically use with a monopod or tripod for best results. March 28, 2013
When length and close focusing matter most I use this occasionally on my 300/4 AF-S and 105/2.8 VR macro (on D7000). While AF can work in good light, I usually manually focus. The fact that the minimum focus distance doesn't change results in 2X life size with the 105 and 0.5X with the 300 (at 600mm it's my longest "macro" lens). I have used both combinations wide open, and had acceptable results, but a stop or two helps with IQ. If you need reach and can't afford the 600/4, this gets you there. If you want more than 1:1 with your 105VR (and a 210mm focal length) this gets you there. If you want a 600mm 0.5X macro lens, this gets you there. If those are places you want to go, get the TC. December 17, 2011
Sharp and clear! I love this teleconverter! I use it with my 70-200 2.8 VRII lens which gives me the equivalent of a 600mm lens on my Nikon D300s. Tack sharp! Buy it. You won't be disappointed. I shot the hawk with this set-up. Look at the detail. Unbelievable! September 3, 2011
Excellent teleconverter! This is an incredible addition to the lens arsenal. The bokeh, for me, is just plain smashing than can range from creamy to abstract. A good solid tripod and shutter release cable are my only recommendations to produce superb images! Well worth the money!! May 12, 2011

I am looking to get further than 400m. I currently have an 80-400mm Nikon so I'm not sure it is worth it for me to buy the 70-200mm and add this teleconverter. I will wind up with the same reach, correct?

You are correct, the 70-200 will become a 140-400 so you would be no better off than using your 80-400.

I understand already that there are a limited number of nikkor lenses that can be attached to the teleconverter so that is not an issue. Thanks for your prompt response !

Yes. Nikon teleconverters can connect to any Nikon D-SLR, however not every lens is compatible with the teleconverters. Check out this new article to learn more and for a link to the full compatibility list of NIKKOR lenses: http://www.nikonusa.com/en/Learn-An....

Lens is not compatible with the teleconverter also the lens will not autofocus with the D5100 as neither the lens or the camera have built in focus motors. You need AF-S or the older AF-I lens for autofocus with the D5100. Here is the teleconverter compatibility chart:

Answer:
There is a list of compatible lens on the Nikon site.

It is unlikely that you will like the degradation of any 2x converter on the 80-400.
This lens will have to be focused manually.
The converter will let in less light as the f stop will be increased.
Hopefully the next (AF-S) version will be compatible with all the AF-S Nikkor converters

The AF-S 55-200mm f/4.5-5.6G ED lens is not compatible with any of our current teleconverters since the rear elements of the lens will touch and may damage the elements in the teleconverter.
The AF VR 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6D ED lens is only compatible with the TC-201 Teleconverter (Vibration reduction mode is not effective and only manual focus is available).

What teleconverters (old and new) are compatible with my 105mm f2.8D Micro-Nikkor? This is the older non-VR version. I'm looking to get a little more reach from the lens.
