Advanced Nikon lens technologies

The AF-S DX NIKKOR 10–24mm f/3.5-4.5G ED is an advanced lens optimized for DX-format Nikon D-SLR cameras. From its ultra-fast, ultra-quiet Silent Wave Motor (SWM) autofocus motor to its ghosting and flare reducing Nikon Super Integrated Coating (SIC), the AF-S DX NIKKOR 10–24mm f/3.5-4.5G ED helps your D-SLR achieve peak performance in both still and HD video shooting.
Silent Wave Motor
Silent Wave Motor
AF-S NIKKOR lenses feature Nikon’s Silent Wave Motor (SWM), which represents a significant advance in AF lens technology. SWM uses ultrasonic vibrations—rather than a gear system—to focus the lens, providing incredibly smooth, silent and precise autofocus operation.
ED (Extra-Low Dispersion) Glass
ED (Extra-Low Dispersion) Glass
An optical glass developed by Nikon that is used with normal optical glass in telephoto lenses to obtain optimum correction of chromatic aberrations.
AS

AS stands for Aspherical lens elements. This type of lens utilizes non-spherical surfaces on either one or both sides of the glass in order to eliminate certain types of lens aberration.

Select NIKKOR lenses have a focusing mode which allows switching from automatic to manual focusing with virtually no lag time by simply turning the focusing ring on the lens. This makes it possible to seamlessly switch to fine manual focusing while looking through the viewfinder.
IF Lens
IF Lens
A NIKKOR lens in which only the internal lens group shifts during focusing. Thus, IF NIKKORS do not change in size during AF operation, allowing for compact, lightweight lenses capable of closer focusing distances. These lenses will be designated with the abbreviation IF on the lens barrel.

Well worth every dollar! This lens is awesome, the difference between my 18-105mm and this is huge. I love this lens, its perfect for real estate and landscapes. Just buy it. August 24, 2014
Wider than expected What an awesome lens. The difference between 18mm on my existing lenses to 10mm on this one is dramatic. Exciting possibilities. Expensive, but worth the investment. Can't wait to take this on my next trip. July 22, 2014
10-24 Nikkor AF-S DX for D7100 The clarity of this lens is fantastic. The feel is right. The weight is nominal for a lens of this caliber. If you like the outdoors and especially like landscapes this lens is for you. I looked at several other brands but kept returning to the Nikkor. My decision was a three month test and review of different wide angles. I am confident with this lens and expect it to perform well for many years. This lens will be used primarily on the D7100. I put a B+H XS-PRO Digital UV Haze MRC nano filter on the front. I am looking forward to hiking the Grand Canyon, Zion National Park, and the Wasatch range with this lens. Hope to see some of you out on the trail. Happy hunting! February 10, 2014
Brilliant lens, outstanding image quality Bought one of these second hand and I´m addicted to it... it´s a superb, tack sharp and free of CA lens, and it has given my love for photography a big boost. This lens is brilliant! January 1, 2014
The best I just got this lens about a week ago and I'm very happy with the pics taken what a big difference between my old Tamron 10-24 and this one. You should buy it. November 27, 2013

Answer:
The 10-24mm and 14-24mm are not ideal for portrait or nature photography. They are wide lenses so would normally be more used for landscape, though you can get some funky effects with wide angle lenses. For portrait I would much more recommend the 50mm 1.8D or G or the 85mm 1.8D or G. For nature, it depends what kind of nature photography you want to do. I would say probably a 300mm focal distance is probably the minimum that you want. I have shot deer with a 200mm but it isn't ideal and to get a really nice shot you have to get much closer than you would really ideally want to (mostly they just run off, fortunately. If you want to do insect photography, I would would say that the best value lens is the Tamron 90mm 2.8, it is cheap feeling and noisy but optically it is great.

Hope this is useful.

I have a d40 and d5100. I am looking to purchase an UWA lens for traveling, but I need it to work equally as well at night as during the day. I am taking multiple trips to photograph diverse areas such as the aurora borealis, Yellowstone, and an African safari. Would you recommend this lens or another? Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

(Ideally, I would like to get a D4 with a 14-24mm lens, but this is out of my price range right now.)

Answer:
Both the D40 and D5100 are DX format lenses so for an ultra-wide lens you would look for something shorter than 15mm. Both cameras also need AF-S lenses in order to use autofocus. There are 3 lenses in Nikon's current line up that are AF-S with focal lengths shorter than 15mm - they are:
AF-S DX Nikkor 10-24 f/3.5-4.5G ED
AF-S DX Nikkor 12-24 f/4G IF-ED
AF-S Nikkor 14-24mm f/2.8 ED
Of these the fastest is the 14-24 but if that is out of your price range then the 10-24 would be your next best bet. Also, keep in mind that of your 2 DSLRs the D5100 has a CMOS sensor and wider ISO range so it will be a better performer in low light situations than your D40.

Answer:
A 10mm lens has an ultra-wide angle of view with no distortion while a fisheye lens features an ultra-wide angle of view that bends and distorts the subject matter as it reaches the edges of the frame.

Sample images taken with the AF-S DX NIKKOR 10-24mm f/3.5-4.5G ED and the AF DX Fisheye-Nikkor 10.5mm f/2.8G ED are attached for comparison.

Answer:
Yes you can attach a DX lens to a full frame body such as the D600, however, in doing this the body will use crop mode and thus you will lose a lot of mp so negating the need for full frame, you can of course disable crop mode but the DX lens will vignette on full frame.

Answer:
Yes it is compatible but you will be shooting in DX mode. Field of view will be 15-36mm and Megapixels will be reduced to 10. It defeats the purpose of owning a full frame camera. For a little more money you can get a AF-S 16-35 f/4 same field of view but a FX lens.

Answer:
Yes it is compatible but you will be shooting in DX crop mode and megapixels will be reduced to 10.5.The effective field of view would be 15-36mm. It is a full frame camera primarily
designed to be used with FX lenses. The AF-S NIKKOR 16-35mm f/4G ED VR would be the FX equivalent.
