Fast aperture, medium telephoto portrait lens for exceptional stills and HD video

Designed for use on Nikon's FX-format D-SLR cameras, this updated medium telephoto f/1.8 lens is great for shooting stills or HD videos. The AF-S NIKKOR 85mm f/1.8G features Nikon's Internal Focus (IF) system providing fast and quiet AF and produces sharp and clear images at all apertures. Its fast maximum aperture is ideal for taking stills or HD videos under ideal lighting, in low light, head and shoulder portraiture, weddings or concerts. When mounted on a DX-format D-SLR, the AF-S NIKKOR 85mm f/1.8G has an effective field of view of 127mm.

Flattering portraits in any light

Get astonishing low light results

This medium telephoto portrait lens is great for use in the studio, on set or for shooting in available light; producing stills or HD video of people with attractive skin tones and beautiful background blur. With its fast f/1.8 aperture, the AF-S NIKKOR 85mm f/1.8G will capture even low-light situations with stunning brilliance.

Beautiful background blur

Achieve more natural depth of field

When you need to isolate the subject from the background, as when shooting portraits—indoors or outdoors—stills or HD video, the AF-S NIKKOR 85mm f/1.8G renders a beautiful, natural background blur (Bokeh) at its wider aperture settings.

The beauty is in the details

Designed for digital with superior performance

Nikon's Super Integrated Coating (SIC) enhances light transmission efficiency and offers superior color consistency and reduced flare. Nikon's Silent Wave Motor (SWM) assures fast, accurate and quiet autofocus as well as full compatibility including autofocus with Nikon's complete line up of FX- and DX-format cameras.
Internal Focusing icon

Internal Focusing

Imagine being able to focus a lens without it changing in size. Nikon's IF technology enables just that. All internal optical movement is limited to the interior of the nonextending lens barrel. This allows for a more compact, lightweight construction as well as a closer focusing distance.
Silent Wave Motor icon

Silent Wave Motor

Nikon's AF-S technology is yet another reason professional photographers like NIKKOR telephoto lenses. AF-S NIKKOR lenses feature Nikon's SWM which converts "traveling waves" into rotational energy to focus the optics. This enables high-speed autofocusing that's extremely accurate and super quiet.
M/A mode icon

M/A mode

AF-S NIKKOR lenses feature Nikon's exclusive M/A mode, that allows switching from autofocus to manual operation with virtually no time lag—even during AF servo operation and regardless of AF mode in use.
Nikon Super Integrated Coating icon

Nikon Super Integrated Coating

To enhance the performance of its optical lens elements, Nikon employs an exclusive multilayer lens coating that helps reduce ghost and flare to a negligible level. Nikon Super Integrated Coating achieves a number of objectives, including minimized reflection in the wider wavelength range and superior color balance and reproduction.

Great lens and very versatile Just upgraded to an FX body and so still experimenting, but have found a terrific use for this lens on my old DX body. It works great as a semi-telephoto lens, which I use to snap awesome action pics of kids' hockey games! The arenas are often dimly lit compared to NHL games, but this lens lets me take bright, crisp pics at 1/500 of a second from behind the glass. At larger apertures, the skaters appear so crisp and colorful, and really pop against the soft backgrounds. Lens not long enough to shoot from stands or bench; guess I am going to have to bite the bullet and get the 70-200 mm f2.8 and pop that on my D610. August 16, 2014
DO IT Since purchasing this lens I have found it very difficult to switch lenses throughout the day...this baby works too well! The autofocus is nearly always accurate and moves at a decent speed. The f1.8 creates some beautiful bokeh thanks to a 7 bladed rounded diaphragm. and I always love a little bit of weather sealing. Youll just keep shooting with this lens.... April 6, 2014
Perfect lens for portraits This is a great lens for shooting portraits! At the zoom length, there's no noticeable distortion and can do beautiful things at very large apertures making it perfect for portraits. I've had it for a few weeks and done a couple of shoots. The only criticism would be that it's auto-focusing is not always quick or accurate. March 24, 2014
Tack Sharp Very sharp lens. The price is very reasonable for a tack sharp lens such as this. Auto focus is fast enough in most cases. Color is excellent and coma almost non-existent. Overall you get a lot for your dollar with this lens. On a D800 this lens got a 40 score on the DXO. Not many lenses score higher. A must have if you wish to capture extreme detail or maximize a D800's potential. March 11, 2014
Fine Fast 85mm Lens Although I have at least three other Nikkor lenses that cover 85mm (classic 85mm manual focus f/2, 24-120mm f/4, and AF-S 80-400mm G) the f/1.8 provides much larger aperture and very fine Bokeh for selective focus work. Very good resolution wide open, even the corners, and excellent resolution corner to corner from f/2.8 until diffraction softening starting about f/11. And virtually no distortion. Although it's not a "gold ring" Nikkor, it's optical performance and mechanical feel are excellent -- manual focusing is precise with no play in the focus ring, and auto-focus is very fast on a D800e. Definitely a 'must' prime lens for any photographer wanting an excellent short-medium telephoto. January 22, 2014

I have a 18-200mm for my D7000 and I have a 50mm D; I am looking for the lense that offers the best bokeh for my camera with the cropped sensor. Was thinking the 85mm G 1.4, but it is too expensive or maybe a 135mm, which I don't see listed. Maybe with the cropped sensor I already have what I need??? I know a prime is sharper than a zoom.....what do you suggest?

Answer:
I'm assuming you have the 50mm 1.8, that should give you the bokeh you want. On a cropped sensor the effective field of view is 75mm. You could also get the AF_S 85mm 1.8g, giving you a 127mm field of view. Both the 50 & 85 should give you excellent bokeh.

I have a D-50 and a D-90 so I am not looking to upgrade my cameras. I use the Nikon 18-200mm VR for all photography and am pleased. However, I am looking for something more suitable for low light, indoor sports, and portraits. Also, I can't afford much...about $500. The 18-200mm works, but if the light isn't good enough, the quality drops, and for indoor sports that isn't good. Will this lens focus fast enough to do a good job or should I look at something else? Thanks

Answer:
It is an excellent low light lens and will focus fast. You will not have the reach you have with the 18-200 but the 85 is a much better portrait lens.
