Fantastic Great macro lens. With or without tripod you can create great photos. April 17, 2013
Very nice macro lens Purchased this lens for my Nikon D3100. It has been a great addition to my camera bag. Have used it in capturing flowers and insects. It has exceeded my expectations. Have had it for only a few months. Looking forward to spring and taking more upclose shots. March 16, 2013
Versatile and sharp I was looking for a lens that would be versatile and let me take portraits in lower light than the kit lens and this was a great choice. Loving it! Takes great indoors can still catch the bugs I have always enjoyed shooting outside. February 13, 2013
Great quality in affordable price I bought this lens few days ago. Compared to 18-55 kit zoom lens, images are more sharp and vivid trough this lens. I find that blue flowers are more purple, instead worn-out blue trough this lens. The autofocus motor is silent and the manual focusing ring has a very good feeling and response. Even in 2.8 aperture images are sharp enough and vignetting is very low. I recommend this lens as multi-purpose lens for closeups, landscapes and street photograpy. December 22, 2012
Great All Purpose Lens I purchased this lens recently with a D7000 body instead of the kit lens. I have been using it as a walk around lens and found it to be not so limiting. The image quality is superb. The photos are very sharp. Very nice for portraits as well. Close up shots have great detail. I find it to be sharper and has better contrast than my Nikon 50 1.8 D. I really love this lens as I find it to be versatile enough and very sharp at a good price. Of course it is not as convenient as a zoom lens and macro is limited given the relatively short focal length. I doubt I would have been as happy with the kit lens or the Nikon 35 mm 1.8 G. P.S. These are down-sampled images much lower quality than original files. September 16, 2012
Exceptional, Stunning Detail for Both Close ups and Portraits I HIGHLY recommend this lens. I own the Nikon D7000, which I LOVE. I have been using the lens from the kit 18mm-105mm. I took great photos. But, I was BLOWN AWAY from this 40 mm lens. I was skeptical because it's only 40mm and I have no range other than 40mm....I am taking the time to write this review because the quality of the photos has shocked me. Everybody from the professional photography realm has told me to put money in good lenses. Everybody should have this lens. Here is why: it took exceptional, stunning detail in photos up close and from far away. It is quite an unique lens that I am becoming obsessed with! September 2, 2012
Excellent Micro Lens I like it for it's compactness. Have used the 60 and the 105. But for traveling it is handy to have a Micro that is small and compact. I like it's design for the DX format. Another great lens from Nikon. July 9, 2012
Great lens for close ups just bought this lens 2 days ago and I am amazed at what it can do. I like taking pictures of flowers and was looking to get more detail. This has helped me to achieve it. July 7, 2012
LOVE IT! BEST MICRO LENS!! This is my first Micro-lens and i absolutely love it. Comparing it to the other lenses it much more cheaper and it gets the job done! If you are thinking about taking close-up pictures and want something inexpensive you are looking in the right place. I recommend this lens ! :) May 17, 2012
Awesome lens. Great price. I wanted a lens that would allow me to do close-up and take great portrait pictures at an affordable price. Not at all disappointed. May 16, 2012
One of the best lenses ever! I bought this lens as a macro lens, but soon discovered that I ended up using it for everything. Image quality is unbelievable, and I cannot fault it in any way. This was a pleasant surprise, as I did not expect anything near this standard considering the price. Build quality is great, and although not built like one of the gold ring lenses, it is on a par with the 35mm f/1.8G and 50mm Gs. Like the 35mm, it is very light and compact, and it makes a nice change to use such a small lens without compromising on image quality! Focus speed is actually rather fast and very accurate. When using this lens for landscape/portrait shots (with the focus limiter switched on), focusing seems instantaneous. I have both this lens and the 35mm DX, and can honestly say that I would pick the 40mm over the 35mm every time. It may not be as fast as the 35mm, but the close focusing ability is very useful, even when I'm not doing 1:1 images. With image quality close to pro lenses, full 1:1 focus capabilities and such a compact body, this has to be one of the best lenses ever! March 27, 2012
Fabulous lens!!! This is my first macro lens. Brought it home today and couldn't believe how amazing it is! Lightweight but hardworking. Took stunning close-ups as well as incredible portraits. I really wish I would have bought this lens sooner. I am extremely pleased with this lens, especially for the price. March 16, 2012
Amazing macro lens! This lens is a great all around lens! It's at a decent focal length for DX cameras, has macro capabilities which are even better than I expected, and great background blur! This makes the lens excellent for portraits and macro shots. The barrel extension makes the lens a little long, but that is a small price to pay for the price of the lens, it's expected. The shallow depth of field can make a lot of the image blurry, so it's best to stop it down to ~f/4 or so, allowing more of the image in focus, because it gets a little too blurry at f/2.8 at times. Just one flaw with this product, when at the closest focusing distance, if the camera is facing a downward angle, the shadow of the lens will appear in the photo if using the camera's built in flash. March 6, 2012
Awesome Lens This is an easy to use lens for closeups & the sharpness is exceptional....auto-focus is quick & dead on... January 29, 2012
IF you don't have a micro/macro lens, you can't beat this! I needed an optic to do some general overall closeup work. This lens is great for most everything you'll need to do. Nikon has done it again with a reasonably priced optic that functions exceptionally well. Light to carry and sharp as a tack. Thanks Nikon! January 10, 2012
Love Love Love Great Lens. If you want to walk around and take awesome macros, this lens is perfect. The autofocus is OKAY with that said, the overall quality of the photos for the money is second to none. Great product December 28, 2011
Beautiful lens! I received this lens as a gift after looking for a macro lens. I was surprised by how much clarity and detail can be achieved in a shot! I was also surprised by how light the lens is, perfect for when I am shooting while traveling. This lens really surprised me but by now I should learn to expect nothing less from Nikon! December 26, 2011
Great Macro Lens I was blown away with its capabilities and detail, especially for the price. December 1, 2011
Nikkor Lens AF-s DX Micro 40mm f/2.8G Great little lens, lightweight and fast focus. Really good for close up as well as for people shots and landscapes. November 30, 2011
Simply Awesome Simply Awesome close-up technology* An upgrade to my faithful 55mm macro, I am more than impressed with this exceptional Nikon lens November 22, 2011
This Lense worths every penny Very pleasing bokeh and respectable closeup, The focusing is not fast but responsive. This inexpensive lense is definitely worth very penny. October 31, 2011
Stunning..! It's an excellent piece of glass, no doubt. I've just bought it through online and shoot some pictures of my baby, family members, also some lanscapes. I really wonder to see that it's sharpness on all apertures is excellent. My macro shots of flowers and some tiny toys are also stunning. This lens is really versatile and great for it's price. And this is the sharpest among cheaper Nikkor lenses. I don't care its technical aspects, but really really satisfied with real life photography. Definitely, this is a gift for DX format Nikonians. Just one sentence about this lens: "Real professional quality with an amateure price". Just take it and enjoy... October 25, 2011
Proud to own one! Couldn't have asked for a better birthday present! Coming from my fiance' made it all the more special! This lens continues to flatter me! I love the versatility that this lens provides esp. the bokeh. October 1, 2011
Gorgeous lens, amazing. I used this lens in photography class, they're so amazing. The photos become to crisp and clear and the blur is beautiful. I might have to purchase these for my own use! August 19, 2011
amazing. I got to try this lens out at school a couple of months ago while in Photography Class. It's amazing! It gives a great bokeh and focus. And the photos are very crisp and clear. Defiantly would recommend. August 14, 2011
A must-have for amateurs and pro's. I love this lens. I a not much of a macro shooter however on a recent trip I was inspired and really wanted to have some fun and step out of my normal comfort zone. Simply put, this lens allowed me to see things, everyday things in a brand new light. This lens is now a staple in my kit whether I am travelling or at home. July 30, 2013
A Gem to Keep Handy Most of my photography is either with the 70-200 2.8VRII, or rather wide with the 12-24. While I have a half-dozen older 24mm and 50mm lenses in my lens rack, their control of CA has not been great, and on the D7000 found I needed to adjust focus. I bought the 40Micro-Nikkor and fell in love with it in its own right. No sign of CA, sharp and contrasty, and just a great lens to work with. I keep finding new uses for this lens, but have come to especially love it when using it as a 'normal' lens - check out the attached image of our skittish Norwegian Forest Cat. I use it for fast close-ups when I don't want to use my 105Micro, but mostly it is just that the 40Micro is so fast to work with. It gets the job done, with sensational quality. November 4, 2012
would recommend I love the sharpness and bokeh, great lens to introduce micro photography June 12, 2012
Most fun I wanted an inexpensive macro lens. This is it. All the required extra effort and precision needed for macro photography pays off in the end. Any issues you may experience using this lens are macro photography issues, not lens issues. Very quickly I realized to maximize this lens, the R1 Wireless Close-Up Speedlight System is a must(my camera has commander mode). I have taken great shots without the R1, but I recommend it strongly for the light required at smaller aperture settings. Higher ISO speeds defeat the amazing sharpness of this great little lens. Buy the R1, shoot at ISO 100. Don't tell Nikon how sharp it is... they might raise the price. The R1 removes most constraints associated with macro photography. Depth off field is the thing. An extremely sharp lens. This lens has whet my appetite for the Nikkor AF-S VR II 105mm f/2.8 Micro IF-ED which would be a perfect versatile all around prime lens for portraits and macro. If I was just starting out and wanted prime lenses, I'd buy the Micro series lenses and have the best of both worlds. May 14, 2012
December 22, 2012

Answer:
Technically, any of the DSLR cameras Nikon sells today. However, as a DX lens, it is best suited for the Nikon D300s and below. Any camera with a cropped sensor (not a full frame sensor) will get a true field of view specific to a 40mm lens. If you use a Nikon D700 or up (full frame sensor), then the field of view will not be true specific to a 40mm lens.

Answer:
My answer is 40mm f/2.8g micro nikkor. 50mm 1.8g is definitely faster than 40mm 2.8g. But otherhand, 40 is sharper, crisper, more colorful, more versatile and slightly more resolutioned (Please see dxomarks lab test) than 50. I've just owned this and promise, IQ is excellent on all its apertures. This would be the right choice to budget DX shooters, who not intended to work in low light. Please look some fotos below. Also note that all these pictures are jpeg pictures, no post process or retouch and directly from Nikon D5100 with 40mm f/2.8G AF-S micro nikkor . And one thing, as I am newbie in photography, please don't postmortum the fotos.
