Fabulous lens!!! This is my first macro lens. Brought it home today and couldn't believe how amazing it is! Lightweight but hardworking. Took stunning close-ups as well as incredible portraits. I really wish I would have bought this lens sooner. I am extremely pleased with this lens, especially for the price. March 16, 2012
Amazing macro lens! This lens is a great all around lens! It's at a decent focal length for DX cameras, has macro capabilities which are even better than I expected, and great background blur! This makes the lens excellent for portraits and macro shots. The barrel extension makes the lens a little long, but that is a small price to pay for the price of the lens, it's expected. The shallow depth of field can make a lot of the image blurry, so it's best to stop it down to ~f/4 or so, allowing more of the image in focus, because it gets a little too blurry at f/2.8 at times. Just one flaw with this product, when at the closest focusing distance, if the camera is facing a downward angle, the shadow of the lens will appear in the photo if using the camera's built in flash. March 6, 2012
Awesome Lens This is an easy to use lens for closeups & the sharpness is exceptional....auto-focus is quick & dead on... January 29, 2012
IF you don't have a micro/macro lens, you can't beat this! I needed an optic to do some general overall closeup work. This lens is great for most everything you'll need to do. Nikon has done it again with a reasonably priced optic that functions exceptionally well. Light to carry and sharp as a tack. Thanks Nikon! January 10, 2012
Love Love Love Great Lens. If you want to walk around and take awesome macros, this lens is perfect. The autofocus is OKAY with that said, the overall quality of the photos for the money is second to none. Great product December 28, 2011
Beautiful lens! I received this lens as a gift after looking for a macro lens. I was surprised by how much clarity and detail can be achieved in a shot! I was also surprised by how light the lens is, perfect for when I am shooting while traveling. This lens really surprised me but by now I should learn to expect nothing less from Nikon! December 26, 2011
Great Macro Lens I was blown away with its capabilities and detail, especially for the price. December 1, 2011
Nikkor Lens AF-s DX Micro 40mm f/2.8G Great little lens, lightweight and fast focus. Really good for close up as well as for people shots and landscapes. November 30, 2011
Simply Awesome Simply Awesome close-up technology* An upgrade to my faithful 55mm macro, I am more than impressed with this exceptional Nikon lens November 22, 2011
This Lense worths every penny Very pleasing bokeh and respectable closeup, The focusing is not fast but responsive. This inexpensive lense is definitely worth very penny. October 31, 2011
Stunning..! It's an excellent piece of glass, no doubt. I've just bought it through online and shoot some pictures of my baby, family members, also some lanscapes. I really wonder to see that it's sharpness on all apertures is excellent. My macro shots of flowers and some tiny toys are also stunning. This lens is really versatile and great for it's price. And this is the sharpest among cheaper Nikkor lenses. I don't care its technical aspects, but really really satisfied with real life photography. Definitely, this is a gift for DX format Nikonians. Just one sentence about this lens: "Real professional quality with an amateure price". Just take it and enjoy... October 25, 2011
Proud to own one! Couldn't have asked for a better birthday present! Coming from my fiance' made it all the more special! This lens continues to flatter me! I love the versatility that this lens provides esp. the bokeh. October 1, 2011
Gorgeous lens, amazing. I used this lens in photography class, they're so amazing. The photos become to crisp and clear and the blur is beautiful. I might have to purchase these for my own use! August 19, 2011
amazing. I got to try this lens out at school a couple of months ago while in Photography Class. It's amazing! It gives a great bokeh and focus. And the photos are very crisp and clear. Defiantly would recommend. August 14, 2011
would recommend I love the sharpness and bokeh, great lens to introduce micro photography June 12, 2012
Most fun I wanted an inexpensive macro lens. This is it. All the required extra effort and precision needed for macro photography pays off in the end. Any issues you may experience using this lens are macro photography issues, not lens issues. Very quickly I realized to maximize this lens, the R1 Wireless Close-Up Speedlight System is a must(my camera has commander mode). I have taken great shots without the R1, but I recommend it strongly for the light required at smaller aperture settings. Higher ISO speeds defeat the amazing sharpness of this great little lens. Buy the R1, shoot at ISO 100. Don't tell Nikon how sharp it is... they might raise the price. The R1 removes most constraints associated with macro photography. Depth off field is the thing. An extremely sharp lens. This lens has whet my appetite for the Nikkor AF-S VR II 105mm f/2.8 Micro IF-ED which would be a perfect versatile all around prime lens for portraits and macro. If I was just starting out and wanted prime lenses, I'd buy the Micro series lenses and have the best of both worlds. May 14, 2012
Macro prática. Boa para retratos Prática lente para fotografar macro sem muito mistério e também excelente para retratos. Permite desfoque posterior (bokeh) com efeito bacana, trabalha com pouca luz, custa relativamente pouco pela qualidade que oferece. March 28, 2012
incompatible with R1C1 Macro Flash I today unpacked my this new macro lens that I ordered from Amazon and could not believe what I saw! Like the much older 60mm Micro Nikkor this lens has ONLY a front lens filter thread. This means that the R1C1 Macro Flash can only be attached to the front lens element and not to the barrel of the lens. The weight of several macro flash heads (up to eight possible) is considerable. For the 60 mm Micro Nikkor Nikon therefore provides the UR-5 adapter ring, so that the R1C1 can be attached to the barrel and not the front element of the lens. The new 40 mm DX Macro does not permit this. The R1C1 can ONLY be attached to the front lens, not the barrel. This incurs considerable wear on that extruding and moving front element and essentially means that this new MACRO lens is incompatible with Nikon's own Macro flash. Incredible! How can Nikon produce a new macro lens incompatible with its own macro flash set? This would perhaps not even be so bad if this was a larger focal lens, where working distance permits minute objects to be illuminated quite well even without a flash. However, for a lens with such an extremely short working distance, using a flash to obtain maximum depth of field for macro-photography is almost a must. I was so hopeful that this much lighter lens would replace my now almost antique 60 mm macro. Sadly I can only return it. November 8, 2011

Answer:
Technically, any of the DSLR cameras Nikon sells today. However, as a DX lens, it is best suited for the Nikon D300s and below. Any camera with a cropped sensor (not a full frame sensor) will get a true field of view specific to a 40mm lens. If you use a Nikon D700 or up (full frame sensor), then the field of view will not be true specific to a 40mm lens.

Answer:
My answer is 40mm f/2.8g micro nikkor. 50mm 1.8g is definitely faster than 40mm 2.8g. But otherhand, 40 is sharper, crisper, more colorful, more versatile and slightly more resolutioned (Please see dxomarks lab test) than 50. I've just owned this and promise, IQ is excellent on all its apertures. This would be the right choice to budget DX shooters, who not intended to work in low light. Please look some fotos below. Also note that all these pictures are jpeg pictures, no post process or retouch and directly from Nikon D5100 with 40mm f/2.8G AF-S micro nikkor . And one thing, as I am newbie in photography, please don't postmortum the fotos.

If you don't have any interest in macro, I would recommend the 50mm, it's a great little lens and very sharp at f8 and up.

by Shun Cheung
September 2011

Photo.net posted Shun Cheung’s review of the AF-S DX Micro-NIKKOR 40mm f/2.8G lens on its website, touting the sharpness of the lens. Cheung noted that the lens “is very sharp from corner to corner, similar to most macro lenses,” adding, “It is both excellent focused to infinity and to close distances.” Cheung said of the macro end of the lens, “AF-S is snappy and you can manually override it without switching off auto focus.” Cheung concluded: “For casual photographers and semi-serious photographers who would like an affordable lens for some close up work, the new AF-S DX Micro-NIKKOR 40mm f/2.8G is a surprisingly excellent lens.

by Gordon Laing
January 2012
Gordon Laing posted his review of the Nikon AF-S DX Micro-NIKKOR 40mm f/2.8G lens, giving it a "Recommended" rating. Laing found the lens "delivers excellent performance with very contrasty and sharp images center to corner at every aperture at normal shooting distances." Noting the short working distance that the lens requires for macro shooting, he found the price and performance of the lens to be excellent. He concluded by stating that the lens is a great value for owners of Nikon DX format D-SLRs who want to explore macro photography.

AF-S DX Micro-NIKKOR 40mm f/2.8G Review

by Julia Silber
February 2012
Julia Silber posted her review of the AF-S DX Micro-NIKKOR 40mm f/2.8G lens on the Popular Photography magazine's website, touting the quality of the lens as well as its affordability. "In both capability and cost, this close-up lens is a gift to DX-format Nikon shooters," she said. Silber noted that the lens is compact, light, and that the "subject magnification at the closest focusing distance came in at greater than 1:1." She concluded by saying that the AF-S DX Micro-NIKKOR 40mm f/2.8G "is a perfect everyday lens with a crucial trick up its sleeve—1:1 macro power."
