Photo.net posted Shun Cheung’s review of the AF-S DX Micro-NIKKOR 40mm f/2.8G lens on its website, touting the sharpness of the lens. Cheung noted that the lens “is very sharp from corner to corner, similar to most macro lenses,” adding, “It is both excellent focused to infinity and to close distances.” Cheung said of the macro end of the lens, “AF-S is snappy and you can manually override it without switching off auto focus.” Cheung concluded: “For casual photographers and semi-serious photographers who would like an affordable lens for some close up work, the new AF-S DX Micro-NIKKOR 40mm f/2.8G is a surprisingly excellent lens.

Gordon Laing posted his review of the Nikon AF-S DX Micro-NIKKOR 40mm f/2.8G lens, giving it a "Recommended" rating. Laing found the lens "delivers excellent performance with very contrasty and sharp images center to corner at every aperture at normal shooting distances." Noting the short working distance that the lens requires for macro shooting, he found the price and performance of the lens to be excellent. He concluded by stating that the lens is a great value for owners of Nikon DX format D-SLRs who want to explore macro photography.

Julia Silber posted her review of the AF-S DX Micro-NIKKOR 40mm f/2.8G lens on the Popular Photography magazine's website, touting the quality of the lens as well as its affordability. "In both capability and cost, this close-up lens is a gift to DX-format Nikon shooters," she said. Silber noted that the lens is compact, light, and that the "subject magnification at the closest focusing distance came in at greater than 1:1." She concluded by saying that the AF-S DX Micro-NIKKOR 40mm f/2.8G "is a perfect everyday lens with a crucial trick up its sleeve—1:1 macro power."
