Excellent Micro Lens I like it for it's compactness. Have used the 60 and the 105. But for traveling it is handy to have a Micro that is small and compact. I like it's design for the DX format. Another great lens from Nikon. July 9, 2012
Great lens for close ups just bought this lens 2 days ago and I am amazed at what it can do. I like taking pictures of flowers and was looking to get more detail. This has helped me to achieve it. July 7, 2012
LOVE IT! BEST MICRO LENS!! This is my first Micro-lens and i absolutely love it. Comparing it to the other lenses it much more cheaper and it gets the job done! One of the best lenses ever! I bought this lens as a macro lens, but soon discovered that I ended up using it for everything. Image quality is unbelievable, and I cannot fault it in any way. This was a pleasant surprise, as I did not expect anything near this standard considering the price. Build quality is great, and although not built like one of the gold ring lenses, it is on a par with the 35mm f/1.8G and 50mm Gs. Like the 35mm, it is very light and compact, and it makes a nice change to use such a small lens without compromising on image quality! Focus speed is actually rather fast and very accurate. When using this lens for landscape/portrait shots (with the focus limiter switched on), focusing seems instantaneous. I have both this lens and the 35mm DX, and can honestly say that I would pick the 40mm over the 35mm every time. It may not be as fast as the 35mm, but the close focusing ability is very useful, even when I'm not doing 1:1 images. With image quality close to pro lenses, full 1:1 focus capabilities and such a compact body, this has to be one of the best lenses ever! March 27, 2012

Technically, any of the DSLR cameras Nikon sells today. However, as a DX lens, it is best suited for the Nikon D300s and below. Any camera with a cropped sensor (not a full frame sensor) will get a true field of view specific to a 40mm lens. If you use a Nikon D700 or up (full frame sensor), then the field of view will not be true specific to a 40mm lens.

This lens will work with any DX format camera and that includes: D90, D300s, D3000, D3100, D5000, D5100, and the D7000. This lens can also work with the FX format and that includes the D3x, D3s, and the D700. Note* when using this lens on an FX camera the camera will be using a smaller portion of the sensor.

My answer is 40mm f/2.8g micro nikkor. 50mm 1.8g is definitely faster than 40mm 2.8g. But otherhand, 40 is sharper, crisper, more colorful, more versatile and slightly more resolutioned (Please see dxomarks lab test) than 50. I've just owned this and promise, IQ is excellent on all its apertures. This would be the right choice to budget DX shooters, who not intended to work in low light. Please look some fotos below. Also note that all these pictures are jpeg pictures, no post process or retouch and directly from Nikon D5100 with 40mm f/2.8G AF-S micro nikkor . And one thing, as I am newbie in photography, please don't postmortum the fotos.

The 50mm lens is not a Macro lens is recommended fro traveling and landscaping. The Micro-NIKKOR 40mm is ideal for shooting general close-ups, delicate flowers, detailed collectables, copy photography, portraits, landscapes and more.

If you don't have any interest in macro, I would recommend the 50mm, it's a great little lens and very sharp at f8 and up.

Photo.net posted Shun Cheung’s review of the AF-S DX Micro-NIKKOR 40mm f/2.8G lens on its website, touting the sharpness of the lens. Cheung noted that the lens “is very sharp from corner to corner, similar to most macro lenses,” adding, “It is both excellent focused to infinity and to close distances.” Cheung said of the macro end of the lens, “AF-S is snappy and you can manually override it without switching off auto focus.” Cheung concluded: “For casual photographers and semi-serious photographers who would like an affordable lens for some close up work, the new AF-S DX Micro-NIKKOR 40mm f/2.8G is a surprisingly excellent lens.

"In both capability and cost, this close-up lens is a gift to DX-format Nikon shooters," she said.
