Nikon's Super Integrated Coating (SIC) enhances light transmission efficiency and offers superior color consistency and reduced flare, while the AF-S NIKKOR 50mm f/1.8G's Aspherical Lens Element (AS) virtually eliminates coma and other types of aberrations, even when shooting at the widest available aperture. Pair that with Nikon's Silent Wave Motor (SWM) for fast, accurate and quiet autofocus, and you can be sure all of your portraits will be tack sharp.

Quiet Autofocus

A significant innovation in AF lens technology, Nikon's Silent Wave Motor uses ultrasonic (inaudible) vibrations—rather than a gear system—to focus the lens, providing incredibly smooth, silent and precise autofocus operation.

Quick Switching from AF to MF

When fine manual focusing is needed, simply rotate the lens focus ring—M/A mode allows you to seamlessly override the AF system with virtually no time lag.

Effective Aberration Correction

Since the 1960s, aspherical lenses have been an important part of the NIKKOR lens family. Virtually eliminating coma and other types of aberration, every new addition to the lineup provides a new level of contrast, resolution and compact design.

Simply Superb After using this lens for over a month I have zero complaints. I've been using this on a D3200 and couldn't be happier. The switch from the kit lenses was phenomenal. Super sharp, great color, and fast autofocus. It doesn't get much better than this. April 6, 2014
Great lens. It has fast focus and great picture quality. It is small and light too. March 21, 2014
I love this lens! this is a great lens. It is very easy to use, and the photos come out great. I am only 14 years old and I completely understand how to use this lens. I use this with my d3100 camera, and I love how I am able to switch between manual and auto focus. I also love the depth of field it has.I would definitely recommend this lens! March 3, 2014
50mm 1.8 G A no brainer, just get one. On a D7100 this lens captures an amazing image in near dark conditions. It is crystal clear, handles depth of field possibilities superbly, and portraits are as good as you'll ever need. Spend $1000 if you must; for 99% of us your images won't be any better than this lens produces. February 8, 2014
Love this lens I'm a long time photographer, but new to DSLR. I bought this lens on the recommendation of wedding photographer. I love it. I'm using it for everything from portraits to pet photos. February 7, 2014

My understanding is the 85mm is the perfect focal length to take portrait shots using a full-frame camera.

If I put this lens on a DX body, I believe it will behave like a 75mm lens. Is this correct?

You will be limiting you field of view. A 50mm on a DX format camera will give you a 75mm equivalent field of view. Suppose you want a group shot of children at a party? If you intend on making photography a business why not invest in a AF-S DX Zoom-Nikkor 17-55mm f/2.8G IF-ED or if you intend to step up to FX a AF-S Zoom-Nikkor 17-35mm f/2.8D IF-ED
