All-in-one zoom for superb super-telephoto shooting

This powerful zoom lens lets DX-format D-SLR users reach 300mm super-telephoto with clarity and sharpness, thanks to built-in VR II (Vibration Reduction) image stabilization. In addition, the new High Refractive Index (HRI) lens—a first for the NIKKOR lineup—achieves clear, high-contrast images at every aperture and focal length yet contributes to making the lens body slim and compact. A practical, versatile lens, the AF-S DX NIKKOR 55-300mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR is ideal for those who want a single lens that can handle just about any shooting opportunitiy.

Super-telephoto capability in a compact lens

The compact AF-S DX NIKKOR 55-300mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR, with its High Refractive Index (HRI) lens element and 2 Extra-low Dispersion (ED) glass elements, lets you easily capture far off images, bringing all the action up close. Nikon VR (Vibration Reduction) image stabilization provides 3.0 stops of blur free handheld shooting, assuring dramatically sharper still images and HD video capture.

Advanced performance

Nikon technology for stunning photos

The AF-S DX NIKKOR 55-300mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR continues Nikon’s tradition of advancing imaging technology. In addition to VR II image stabilization, it features some of Nikon’s latest lens technologies: Nikon’s exclusive Silent Wave Motor (SWM) for precise, fast, ultra-quiet autofocus operation, Super Integrated Coating (SIC) for enhanced performance in low-light and minimizing ghosting and flare, Tripod Detection Mode for reducing vibrations during tripod shooting and more.

Nikon Vibration Reduction

*Based on CIPA Standard. This value is achieved when: DX-format lenses are attached to a DX-format digital SLR camera and zoom lenses are set at the maximum telephoto position.
Vibration Reduction
Vibration Reduction
A Nikon in-lens technology that improves image stability by automatically compensating for camera shake. Lenses that offer VR will feature the abbreviation VR on the lens barrel.
Silent Wave Motor
Silent Wave Motor
AF-S NIKKOR lenses feature Nikon’s Silent Wave Motor, which represents a significant advance in AF lens technology.
ED (Extra-Low Dispersion) Glass
ED (Extra-Low Dispersion) Glass
An optical glass developed by Nikon that is used with normal optical glass in telephoto lenses to obtain optimum correction of chromatic aberrations.
HRI
HRI
HRI stands for High Refractive Index Lens. With a refractive index of more than 2.0, one HRI lens can offer effects equivalent to those obtained with several normal glass elements and can compensate for both field curvature and spherical aberrations. Therefore, HRI lenses achieve great optical performance in an even more compact body.
A-M
A-M
A-M stands for Auto-Manual Mode. Thanks to a mechanism incorporated in the lens barrel, smooth focusing operation in Manual focus mode is realized in the same way as users have become accustomed to with conventional manual-focus lenses by adding an appropriate torque to the focus ring.

A gem indeed Being a hobbyist, I find the lens excellent. Autofocus is good (with my D7000), VR works fine, excellent bokeh and light weight. Colour representation & contrast is nice. Macro capability is awesome at 0.28X, and I am using very cheap (1$) macro add-on filter with it and got some acceptable result. Con is it is not a low light lens, doesn't work with FX bodies. I personally never used its heavier sister the 70-300 VR so cannot compare the two. November 24, 2012
Great All in One Lens This lens can do it all. I used to carry and swap the 18-55mm lens with this one. The lens is very light by the way. After a while I noticed that most of my shots were at least 6 to 10 feet away. Perfect for the low end of the 55-300mm range of this lens. Plus when I take it to sporting events the 300mm allows me to stay in the bleachers. Alot of our friends have the 200mm lens and have to get alot closer for the same shots. The image stabilizer allows for crisp action photos at any distance. October 17, 2011
Excellent for beginners like me... Love this lens so much... Its great combination with my d3300.. July 9, 2014
Awesome lens - great quality Bought this when I started going to horse shows because I needed something with better zoom.. took it to my second show & was absolutely amazed with the quality of the photos. I'm the type who likes her artsy photos & was quite impressed with how good they looked. If anyone is looking for a zoom lens, I suggest going with this one. Works really well with squirrels & birds in trees too! June 28, 2014
Great investment!!!! I was in need of a lens that would go beyond what my small camera would go. I decided to go for this zoom lens after my 18-55mm lens that came with my D40X completely died. I've had my camera for 6 years and I use it a LOT. Getting this lens reignited my passion for photography. I am not an expert photographer, just like to take good pictures. This lens is awesome. It produces crisp images and complements the camera settings to produce excellent pictures with great colors. I am very happy with this lens. Pros: It is not heavy and it is easy to carry/fit in a bag; great colors; crisp images; zooms to great lengths keeping details. Cons: Closer objects are difficult to photograph, but not impossible (I bought extension tubes to resolve this issue) May 23, 2014

i've had the d3100 for a year. i've taken some nice pictures of my 2 year old outside playing and a couple of nice indoor portraits with a backdrop. i'd like to buy a flash (been researching the sb-700) and a new lens. i've been reading about the 55-300 and 70-300 but not sure which is better for my use. don't want to spend the extra $200 if the 55-300 is just as good for what i need it for than the 70-300. also any comments on flashes i'd appreciate. was looking at sb-600 before but heard tha was discontinued.

The modern lenses are good, this lens to. I you talk about image quality this lens is super. It's better than 55-200 but a bit slower AF than 70-300VR. However 55-300 is a lot lighter.

Answer:
Most all lenses manufactured will focus past the "infinity" point. This lens, and many other modern design lenses, do not have the range finder scales of older lenses.

When focusing on a very distant (astrological, mountains, etc.) subject you will need to verify focus. I personally like to take a test shot then use the back lcd and zoom function to verify my focus setting is working for the subject.

Answer:
Don't like screw in hoods, bang the lens hood into something and there go the lens threads odd worse. A good wack and the Hb-57 will probably self destruct.

My AF-S DX Nikkor 55-300mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR "lens not attached" message on D3100?

I just put my "AF-S DX Nikkor 55-300mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR" lens on my D3100 on my D3100 camera and I receive a "lens not attached" message. By comparing the lens with the one that came with the camera I see that the 55-300 lens does not have the target ball on it (thus I am assuming this is the reason for the message). My question is- I thought that this lens was compatible with auto-focus on this camera? I checked compatibility charts and it said to make sure that I bought one with "AF-S" to be compatible with the D3100. However I can't get it to work. Did I receive an "old" lens without the target? Can anyone let me know what 55-300 lens would be compatible with auto-focus on my D3100 (and yes, I am an amateur :)). thanks in advance.

Answer:
Sounds like you've cleaned the contacts, could be a bad lens.

Answer:
The D3100 does not have a built in focus motor but the lens does, so it will autofocus. The-S designation means the lens has a silent wave focus motor.
