In addition to VR II image stabilization, it features some of Nikon’s latest lens technologies: Nikon’s exclusive Silent Wave Motor (SWM) for precise, fast, ultra-quiet autofocus operation, Super Integrated Coating (SIC) for enhanced performance in low-light and minimizing ghosting and flare, Tripod Detection Mode for reducing vibrations during tripod shooting and more.

Vibration Reduction
Vibration Reduction
A Nikon in-lens technology that improves image stability by automatically compensating for camera shake. Lenses that offer VR will feature the abbreviation VR on the lens barrel.
Silent Wave Motor
Silent Wave Motor
AF-S NIKKOR lenses feature Nikon’s Silent Wave Motor, which represents a significant advance in AF lens technology.
ED (Extra-Low Dispersion) Glass
ED (Extra-Low Dispersion) Glass
An optical glass developed by Nikon that is used with normal optical glass in telephoto lenses to obtain optimum correction of chromatic aberrations.
HRI
HRI
HRI stands for High Refractive Index Lens. With a refractive index of more than 2.0, one HRI lens can offer effects equivalent to those obtained with several normal glass elements and can compensate for both field curvature and spherical aberrations. Therefore, HRI lenses achieve great optical performance in an even more compact body.
A-M
A-M
A-M stands for Auto-Manual Mode. Thanks to a mechanism incorporated in the lens barrel, smooth focusing operation in Manual focus mode is realized in the same way as users have become accustomed to with conventional manual-focus lenses by adding an appropriate torque to the focus ring.

A gem indeed Being a hobbyist, I find the lens excellent. Autofocus is good (with my D7000), VR works fine, excellent bokeh and light weight. Colour representation & contrast is nice. Macro capability is awesome at 0.28X, and I am using very cheap (1$) macro add-on filter with it and got some acceptable result. Con is it is not a low light lens, doesn't work with FX bodies. I personally never used its heavier sister the 70-300 VR so cannot compare the two. November 24, 2012
Great All in One Lens This lens can do it all. I used to carry and swap the 18-55mm lens with this one. The lens is very light by the way. After a while I noticed that most of my shots were at least 6 to 10 feet away. Perfect for the low end of the 55-300mm range of this lens. Plus when I take it to sporting events the 300mm allows me to stay in the bleachers. Alot of our friends have the 200mm lens and have to get alot closer for the same shots. The image stabilizer allows for crisp action photos at any distance. October 17, 2011
Excellent for beginners like me... Love this lens so much... Its great combination with my d3300.. July 9, 2014
Awesome lens - great quality Bought this when I started going to horse shows because I needed something with better zoom.. took it to my second show & was absolutely amazed with the quality of the photos. I'm the type who likes her artsy photos & was quite impressed with how good they looked. If anyone is looking for a zoom lens, I suggest going with this one. Works really well with squirrels & birds in trees too! June 28, 2014
Great investment!!!! I was in need of a lens that would go beyond what my small camera would go. I decided to go for this zoom lens after my 18-55mm lens that came with my D40X completely died. I've had my camera for 6 years and I use it a LOT. Getting this lens reignited my passion for photography. I am not an expert photographer, just like to take good pictures. This lens is awesome. It produces crisp images and complements the camera settings to produce excellent pictures with great colors. I am very happy with this lens. Pros: It is not heavy and it is easy to carry/fit in a bag; great colors; crisp images; zooms to great lengths keeping details. Cons: Closer objects are difficult to photograph, but not impossible (I bought extension tubes to resolve this issue) May 23, 2014

Answer:
what body are you using? if it's one of the new ones (d3100, d5100 or d7000), or one of the big ones (d700, d3s/d3x), amp up the iso and you may get away with a 70-300 f/4-5.6. if one of the old ones, you need to get hold of a brighter lens (around f/2.8 constant or f/3.5 constant). don't use flash, it doesn't work at such distances. also, a monopod or a tripod with a loose head is good so you won't get tired holding a body with a larger lens, and it also helps with hand tremor.

Yes it will. This lens has the built in focus motor.....the D80 body does not. AF-S means it uses the Silent Wave Technology focus motor to focus. The 55-300 VR lens is an excellent lens for this camera.

I have a D7000 with 55-300 lens and am having trouble figuring out which bags and backpacks would be best suited for me. It seems that many of the bags cannot fit a 55-300 lens, at least not mounted to the camera. I am planning to get a 18-55 lens in the near future so I would like for the bag to be able to fit that lens in as well. Also, as an amateur I would prefer not to have to spend to much money on the bag/backpack.

Answer:
I'm very happy with my Tenba Shootout Sling, medium size. At $110, it might be a little pricey for you. Lowepro makes a similar model for a little less, but the quality doesn't compare to the Tenba. The bottom compartment just fits my D7100 with the 55-300mm lens attached, plus plenty of room for my 18-105mm and 50mm lenses, flash unit, two bottles of water, cell phone, and rain shell, along with a tripod hanging off the side. Also, if I ever get one of those huge super-fast teles, I can take out a middle barrier and slip the camera and lens through the top.

I am new at DSLRs. In the simulator the focal length seems directly related to zoom factor for all lenses. Why does the 55-300mm show a zoom of 5.5x but the 18-300mm shows a zoom factor of 16.7x in the specs?

Focussing issue with 55-300

Hi. I have noticed a focusing issue with 15-300 VR lens. It actually does not focus on the object while using 300 mm zoom. In fact this problem has noticed for the range beyond 200. The object is "blurred" quite often. I used this for bird photography but the results are not as expected. I am using D3100. Also I am getting a lot of color noise in the pictures.

Answer:
Your lens is probably defective. I had a similar problem with a used AF-S DX NIKKOR 55-300mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR on my D7100. Auto focus would search and search, and if I got lucky it would focus on a very tight range. For example, I might get a bird's beak in focus at 300mm, but its feet would be blurred. I sent the lens back and got a refurbished model. Now it takes perfectly focused photos every time. If it's not too late, get a replacement.

By the way, Nikon refurbed lenses are a great value.

Ghost on some images

I purchased this lens for use with my D3200 and took some test shots. In a couple of the images there's a ghost and I'm wondering if this is in any way related to the VR being on / off? I had to take a screen capture of the NEF editor and save as PNG in order to get the file size down but you'll see what I'm talking about...

Any comments on what might have caused this greatly appreciated!

Answer:
JoeR - I was standing in the shade with the sun at 1:00pm off my right shoulder. Lens hood was in place. I have a Nikon 58mm NC filter on to protect the lens. I'll be more aware of the angle light may be entering the lens and see how it goes. I took a bunch of shots today but haven't downloaded them yet.

Thanks for the reply!

Answer:
Nothing to do with the VR, ghosting is usually caused by too bright of light entering the lens. Are you using the lens hood?
Try to change the angle of perspective to minimize the source of the light reflecting off the lens.

Answer:
This lens is not compatible with any of our current teleconverters since the rear elements of the lens will touch and may damage the elements in the teleconverter.

Not all lenses can be used with a teleconverter. In general wide angle lenses or wide angle zoom lenses cannot be used. Also, lenses with relatively slow maximum apertures (slower than f2.8) cannot be used with teleconverters.

Nikkor 55-200mm VR or 55-300mm VR for Nikon D60?

Hello,
Wondering which Nikkor lens would be best for kids sport activities (55-200mm or 55-300mm)?
I own Nikon D60 with 18-55mm VR, SB-400 and just placed an order for Nikkor 35mm F1.8 lens, now just need to get the right zoom.
Any idea on which Nikkor lens would focus faster or are they the both the same (55-200mm or 55-300mm)?
55-200mm has a perfect price but 55-300mm seems to be better quality built.
I am on a budget so please do not suggest a 70-200mm F2.8 VR for sports pictures, I love it but can't afford it.

Thank you for any feedback,

Vadim

Answer:
Is the 70-300 within your budget? Might be a better option than both 55-200/300 for that type of shooting.
By the way, the 35mm 1.8 is an amazing lens. You'll be very happy with the results.

Hello, my question is why would the image move abruptly in the viewfinder after the shot is fired then i hear a movement sound. This only happened when VR is on. Is this normal? I get blurred pictures because of this, specially in full zoom. Both lenses do this with the 18-55 and the 55-300 lenses. Is there something wrong with the camera D5100?

I will be visiting a wildlife park later this summer. From an open top bus I am thinking the monopod will work much better than trying to set up the tripod. I know to turn off the VR on a tripod but did not know about the monopod and don't have a lot of time to experiment before the trip. Thanks
