AF-S DX NIKKOR 55-300mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR 4.3 5 72 72
Not sharp past 200mm After having it a week I returned it and got a Tamron 70-300mm. Now I can get sharp pics up to 300mm. July 11, 2012
You get what you pay for I purchased this lens after reading as many reviews as possible. So I was not dissapointed in what I got, for the price. This is what I suspected, a cheap Nikon lens. The only real flaw in the lens is the inability to focus at infinity. The lens is made with less expensive materials (except for the lenses) and the distance indicator is not present, which is not a real problem. It does take a bit of time to focus, but that time can be reduced by focusing on something close, then move to the object you want to focus on. I recommended this product, but you should only purchase this lens if it is all you can afford, or are willing to accept a it's short comings December 6, 2011
It does reach out to 300mm Not really all that impressed with this lens. It is slow focusing and even then hand held shots are blurry. It could be me expecting more, but for what I paid for this lens I like my 55-200mm more. April 17, 2011
Not bad As the lens is a bit heavy catches while hand turning from 55 to 300. Autofocus and VR works perfect but at full zoom the picture is not very sharp. I tried taking picture with tripod but at 275-300mm it lacks sharpness.. But its worth the money. for $400 u get complete outdoor set. if u hv 18-55mm then this can be ur next lens to complete the range from 18-300 in two lenses. October 4, 2010
I had more expectation from this lens. But it's not giving output in that course. Photos are not that much sharp or Zoom is not upto expected level. Function is not smooth. April 17, 2011
Unsatisfied This lens takes decent photos, but I exchanged one because the view kept jumping, while the lens made a clicking noises. The second hasn't developed that problem. However, both lenses had terrible zoom action....the mechanism is hard to turn, especially at full zoom. I had hoped it would loosen up with use, but so far it has not. July 27, 2011
It Broke! I had this lens for 3 months and when I took the camera out of my camera bag (lens attached) the lens broke off! I am the only one who uses this camera and it was never dropped and it has always been handled with the utmost of care. I was totally shocked when the lens broke because Nikon has a very good reputation. April 14, 2011

Not sure what you mean, but it will operate at whatever focal length between 55 and 300mm that you like. All telephoto lenses are that way.

Answer:
Yes, this lens has Vibration Reduction (VR) and is compatible with the D3000 since the lens has the internal motor for AF. In the model of the lens you will see VR for Vibration Reduction and AF-S that means the lens has the built-in motor for autofocus.

Answer:
I agree the 70-300 is much better. You may well also want to use a tripod when shooting at 300mm, the actual focal length on a DX DSLR is 450mm, which means you probably want to have a shutter speed at around 1/500 or faster, if not using a tripod.

Answer:
Yes!

For the price, this is an excellent lens for situations where there is plenty of light and you need lots of zoom.

It is not as good for low light photography, since it can only open up to f/4.5-f/5.6. Some cameras may have problems focusing at f/5.6 in dim light, like indoors under artificial light..

Answer:
Probably not- The maximum aperture is f4.5 so a 2x extender would make it f8, Not enough light to focus.
Look at Nikons lens catalog for wiich extender will work on what lens. Nikon usa.com. That will tell you everything you need to know about Nikon lenses.
Also, don't forget the 1.5x multipication factor for your D7000,makes your lens 105-400mm f4.5-f5.6

Answer:
Unfortunately, this lens is not fast enough to work well with teleconverters. Nikon AF systems (except D4 & D800) need an effective aperture of f5.6. Adding a teleconverter, even the 1.4x will take this lens beyond that. The 55-300 is a very good value. If you want a little more reach in a zoom, the 80-400 will get you more, but at 4x the price, and it is still not fast enough for teleconverters. It sounds like your needs may be up in the price range of the exotics. The 200-400 f4 zoom will take a teleconverter and get you out to almost 600mm. Similarly, the fast telephotos will take teleconverters as well, but we are talking serious $$$ for all of these lenses. Unfortunately, the level of optics that you are looking for is not really available at the price point of this lens. Renting a lens might be a good way to figure out which way to go.

In some situations. I use it to take scenic closeups. I.e., sunsets, flowing water, vegetation, people, or animals with a distorted background. The 18-135 mm AF VR works very well for landscapes.

Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 55-300mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR Lens Review

by Julia Silber
April 2011
Popular Photography magazine's Julia Silber reviewed the Nikon AF-S DX NIKKOR 55-300mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR Lens in the May issue of the magazine. Silber said that the lens attains focus quickly, and the VR added 2.5 - 4 stops of "extra handholdability." Silber touted the AF-S DX NIKKOR 55-300mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR lens' quality, stating: "It's well constructed, with admirable sharpness, distortion and vignetting control, magnification, and image stabilization."
