Awesome lens - great quality
Bought this when I started going to horse shows because I needed something with better zoom.. took it to my second show & was absolutely amazed with the quality of the photos. I'm the type who likes her artsy photos & was quite impressed with how good they looked. If anyone is looking for a zoom lens, I suggest going with this one. Works really well with squirrels & birds in trees too!

I was in need of a lens that would go beyond what my small camera would go. I decided to go for this zoom lens after my 18-55mm lens that came with my D40X completely died.
I've had my camera for 6 years and I use it a LOT. Getting this lens reignited my passion for photography. I am not an expert photographer, just like to take good pictures. This lens is awesome. It produces crisp images and complements the camera settings to produce excellent pictures with great colors. I am very happy with this lens.
Pros: It is not heavy and it is easy to carry/fit in a bag; great colors; crisp images; zooms to great lengths keeping details.
Cons: Closer objects are difficult to photograph, but not impossible (I bought extension tubes to resolve this issue)

I wanted a lens that would get close up from far away. This lens really is better then I expected.

I have this lens recommended by a photographer in Best Buy and show me why this one was better than the 55-200mm. I'm glad that I heard his arguments because I love this lens and has a good range for the price. I am not a expert in photography but seeing and making some research in the internet has help to understand more this art. I will say a most have if you want to take pictures of animals.

A must have for any DX format Nikon.
I use this with my D3200 and rarely use another lens for nature photography. It even takes great portraits when zoomed in to create Bokeh. Need to reach out a bit farther than your kit lens? You wont regret this one, its a higher quality than the 55-200mm, plus it reaches much farther.

Great lens, excellent value for money.
Compact, lightweight, good performance. Suitable for nature photography. (by the way, I experienced trouble uploading sample photos here)

Took this little baby out on the water right after I bought if for some sailboat racing photography and was very happy with the results. Even in lower light it performed very well. I pumped the ISO up a little to insure that the shutter speed would stop the action. But the results were dazzling, to be honest. Resolution as sharp as a tack. The autofocus tended to 'hunt' a litte from time to time. But I could live with that. Light weight. Ergonomics just fine. And I guess that the Vibration Reduction was working well as could be expected, considering that I was shooting from a small boat aiming a larger boats moving pretty fast. Nice lens.

Great images, Great Flexibility
This lens has demonstrated great flexibility from closeups to field shots. It has performed well as a portrait lens, and done better than yeoman service in the fiield.

Great value zoom lens, especially if bundled with camera
Bought mine together with a D3100 just after Christmas and got the bundle discount deal for the lens ($150 off). Have used for high school sports photography and recently at the local nature center. Works well in both locations - nice and sharp at the 55mm end, but a little fuzzier at times at the 300mm end. Works reasonably well in low light, despite the smaller aperture sizes. Lightweight and easy to carry. Better at the 55mm end than the 18-55 kit lens due to bigger aperture - gives a higher shutter speed for sports etc. Lens hood attachment seems flimsy compared to the bayonet type used by other NIKKOR lenses but hasn't broken yet! VR works very well as long as the subject isn't moving too fast or you can use a flash (see attached pictures as examples) - all are hand-held. The ski racing is at dusk/ night time so a difficult combination to capture.

Great product for price
I'm not a professional photographer. But I read a lot..I own this product for more than a year. Overall performance is better even though focusing is kind of slow...

Own a Nikon DSLR ? You Need This Lens......
This is one very versatile lens, takes you from the D5100 kit lens 55mm all the way to 300mm (82 to 450 equivalent on 35mm), and it's extremely sharp on the autofocus, resolution, and color rendition. My first day out with this lens, I went to a race track and shot 450 frames. Used the D5100 motor drive to shoot cars running by at 100+ MPH, some panning, some stop action, some stills, and all the results were great. An excellent lens that I really enjoy using.

AF-S DX NIKKOR 55-300mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR

Worth the money!

I was useing the 18-55 and i just couldnt get the job done from a far distance. It is a little excpensive for a begginer but its worth it if your into wildlife or great landscape photography. I love it!!!

Crisp and clear with tripod use @ highest f-stop (4.5/5.6) throughout the whole range. Focus speed and metering are good. Focusing is tight but good, no jerkiness.

Can't beat the price
I really recommend the this over it's 55-200mm counterpart. It's beefier and feels more rugged. The metal attachment ring elevates it outta the "cheap" category IMO. The 300mm really comes in to play at this end, Wet lands, parks and wild life take on a whole new meaning when you can fill the frame from a considerable distance. Not to mention just walking around street photos. it's not ridiculously big that it draws attention to yourself, OK a little but not a crazy amount.
This lens actually has VR2. In practice IMO you still need to be steady, and at 300mm in low light at f5.6......forget it, you need a tripod or something to rest the camera on. Images are sharp and look great, focus is quick and accurate. Unless your some kinda serious pro this lens is more than gets the job done. I recommend totally. One last thing it comes with the simple round hood, I wish it came with the cooler looking "flower" type, that's a oh well whatever not gonna sweat that little point.

Fantastic Range shot, excellent VR.. Love it & Grab it!!!!
I have had the 55-300 for a couple of weeks now and have used it quite a lot on my D3100. This lens I can say pure Class. I do not understand why its rating is so low, the lens should deserve 4.8 at least. The range is better than others, starting at 55mm rather than 70. It is very sharp from 55 through about 200 and better than others at 300. The VR is Great. My D3100 seems to meter very well with it and color is excellent. I highly recommend this lens..

I love the ranges of this lens. I love shooting wildlife pictures, and find it exactly what I need for fast beautiful photos.

I got this lens when i bought my d5100 and so far it has lived up to all my expectations, better quality then i expected
January 14, 2012
I have had the 55-300 for a couple of weeks now and have used it quite a lot on my D3100 with and without a tripod. In this class, I do not feel there is a better lens. The range is better than others, starting at 55mm rather than 70. It is very sharp from 55 through about 200 and better than others at 300. Sure, in this price range it will not be super sharp at 300. But having come to Nikon from Sony and comparing this lens to the Sony 75-300, well, there is no comparison! I have found almost no color fringing, something I had to deal with in the Sony. The VR is EXCELLENT! Better than any other lens I own. My D3100 seems to meter very well with it and color is excellent. I highly recommend this lens to all DX owners!

Outdoor complete lens
I used to look for lens that capable for carry in holiday event or trip.
And this lens are perfect, can use for anything in outdoor activity and even in some indoor moment.
Nikon make a good job, I wonder when they are going to make 8-18mm lens to complete the range.

I toggled back & fourth on what type of lens I wanted to add to my equipment, and after researching, talking to pro's and the like I purchased this lens.
I'm not a newbie but have been out of it for a long while, but this lens does more than I expected, and some of the bad info given I haven't found to be true.
It's light weight, durable and easy to use, I recommend buying this lens if you've been wavering on what to buy.

For the money this is a real good lens.
I ordered 55-300 VR on line and the day it was delivered, I took it to a Wolf Camera store to compare the 70-300 VR. The rep at the store had no problem with me doing that as they didn't have a 55-300 in stock anyway. The rep at the store and I absolutely agreed that it was a least as sharp and maybe even a little sharper than the 70-300 VR based on images taken on the same body with the two different lenses. The 55-300 locked focus slower for sure but for the money, the 55-300 is a great lens. I'm glad I bought it. It zooms in and out pretty smooth also. I bought it with a body so I got the great instant rebate also. Thanks Nikon. Canon had nothing to match this deal, i.e. camera and VR/IS telephoto lens for near the same price.
