In addition to VR II image stabilization, it features some of Nikon’s latest lens technologies: Nikon’s exclusive Silent Wave Motor (SWM) for precise, fast, ultra-quiet autofocus operation, Super Integrated Coating (SIC) for enhanced performance in low-light and minimizing ghosting and flare, Tripod Detection Mode for reducing vibrations during tripod shooting and more.

Nikon Vibration Reduction

Learn more about Nikon’s in-lens VR image stabilization which assures dramatically sharper still images and video capture when shooting handheld.
*Based on CIPA Standard. This value is achieved when: DX-format lenses are attached to a DX-format digital SLR camera and zoom lenses are set at the maximum telephoto position.
Vibration Reduction
Vibration Reduction
A Nikon in-lens technology that improves image stability by automatically compensating for camera shake. Lenses that offer VR will feature the abbreviation VR on the lens barrel.
Silent Wave Motor
Silent Wave Motor
AF-S NIKKOR lenses feature Nikon’s Silent Wave Motor, which represents a significant advance in AF lens technology.
ED (Extra-Low Dispersion) Glass
ED (Extra-Low Dispersion) Glass
An optical glass developed by Nikon that is used with normal optical glass in telephoto lenses to obtain optimum correction of chromatic aberrations.
HRI
HRI
HRI stands for High Refractive Index Lens. With a refractive index of more than 2.0, one HRI lens can offer effects equivalent to those obtained with several normal glass elements and can compensate for both field curvature and spherical aberrations. Therefore, HRI lenses achieve great optical performance in an even more compact body.
A-M
A-M
A-M stands for Auto-Manual Mode. Thanks to a mechanism incorporated in the lens barrel, smooth focusing operation in Manual focus mode is realized in the same way as users have become accustomed to with conventional manual-focus lenses by adding an appropriate torque to the focus ring.

A gem indeed Being a hobbyist, I find the lens excellent. Autofocus is good (with my D7000), VR works fine, excellent bokeh and light weight. Colour representation & contrast is nice. Macro capability is awesome at 0.28X, and I am using very cheap (1$) macro add-on filter with it and got some acceptable result. Con is it is not a low light lens, doesn't work with FX bodies. I personally never used its heavier sister the 70-300 VR so cannot compare the two. November 24, 2012
Great All in One Lens This lens can do it all. I used to carry and swap the 18-55mm lens with this one. The lens is very light by the way. After a while I noticed that most of my shots were at least 6 to 10 feet away. Perfect for the low end of the 55-300mm range of this lens. Plus when I take it to sporting events the 300mm allows me to stay in the bleachers. Alot of our friends have the 200mm lens and have to get alot closer for the same shots. The image stabilizer allows for crisp action photos at any distance. October 17, 2011
Awesome Lens Have really gotten into photography recently, this lens is definitely good pickup. It is very versatile and can be used for a huge variety of shots. I use it for sports and wildlife photos as well as landscapes and sunsets. October 31, 2014
Excellent for beginners like me... Love this lens so much... Its great combination with my d3300.. July 9, 2014
Awesome lens - great quality Bought this when I started going to horse shows because I needed something with better zoom.. took it to my second show & was absolutely amazed with the quality of the photos. I'm the type who likes her artsy photos & was quite impressed with how good they looked. If anyone is looking for a zoom lens, I suggest going with this one. Works really well with squirrels & birds in trees too! June 28, 2014

I bought a Nikon D5200 along with this lens earlier this year so that I could take some quality shots of my daughter playing high school and club soccer. I love the camera and for regular everyday shots, it's working very nicely. However, with soccer photos, I just can't seem to get clear pictures. Autofocus is very slow and sometimes seems like it's not even working. I try to push the autofocus button and sometimes it makes a difference, sometimes it doesn't. I've been working with either aperture priority or programmed auto and neither makes much difference. A few of my pictures are clear but not sharp and some are just plain blurry. I have a friend with the same camera and a similar lens who always takes gorgeous shots. She is another parent like myself and it seems like her shots are effortless. I am very frustrated by my inability to take quality shots. I need to fix this so I have some memories of my daughter's high school soccer career.

I took over 1000 shots at a soccer match on Friday night and there are very few that I would save and none that I would consider publishing to our club website. I'm very frustrated. This is my first DSLR and I am very admittedly a novice. I would greatly appreciate any tips in layman's terms or suggestions for camera settings that might help me work with this lens with better results.

Thank you!

Answer:
When shooting in either P,S,A or M modes at a sporting event we like to recommend AF-C for your focus mode and 3D tracking for the AF area mode. AF-C is going to ensure that your camera is focusing as fast as possible and the 3D tracking is going to allow you to keep your subject in focus as they are moving through your field of view. In the manual below you may find additional information regarding focus mode on page 33, and AF area mode on page 36.

Answer:
The use of lens filters is basically up to the photographer.
Some people use a NC clear filter or UV filter as a means of protecting the front glass of the lens. Another popular filter is the circular polarizer but you must learn how to use it. Here are a few articles you might want to read:
