Super-telephoto capability in a compact lens

The compact AF-S DX NIKKOR 55-300mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR, with its High Refractive Index (HRI) lens element and 2 Extra-low Dispersion (ED) glass elements, lets you easily capture far off images, bringing all the action up close. Nikon VR (Vibration Reduction) image stabilization provides 3.0 stops of blur free handheld shooting, assuring dramatically sharper still images and HD video capture.

Advanced performance

Nikon technology for stunning photos

The AF-S DX NIKKOR 55-300mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR continues Nikon’s tradition of advancing imaging technology. In addition to VR II image stabilization, it features some of Nikon’s latest lens technologies: Nikon’s exclusive Silent Wave Motor (SWM) for precise, fast, ultra-quiet autofocus operation, Super Integrated Coating (SIC) for enhanced performance in low-light and minimizing ghosting and flare, Tripod Detection Mode for reducing vibrations during tripod shooting and more.

Nikon Vibration Reduction

Learn more about Nikon’s in-lens VR image stabilization which assures dramatically sharper still images and video capture when shooting handheld.
*Based on CIPA Standard. This value is achieved when: DX-format lenses are attached to a DX-format digital SLR camera and zoom lenses are set at the maximum telephoto position.
Vibration Reduction
Vibration Reduction
A Nikon in-lens technology that improves image stability by automatically compensating for camera shake. Lenses that offer VR will feature the abbreviation VR on the lens barrel.
Silent Wave Motor
Silent Wave Motor
AF-S NIKKOR lenses feature Nikon’s Silent Wave Motor, which represents a significant advance in AF lens technology.
ED (Extra-Low Dispersion) Glass
ED (Extra-Low Dispersion) Glass
An optical glass developed by Nikon that is used with normal optical glass in telephoto lenses to obtain optimum correction of chromatic aberrations.
HRI
HRI
HRI stands for High Refractive Index Lens. With a refractive index of more than 2.0, one HRI lens can offer effects equivalent to those obtained with several normal glass elements and can compensate for both field curvature and spherical aberrations. Therefore, HRI lenses achieve great optical performance in an even more compact body.
A-M
A-M
A-M stands for Auto-Manual Mode. Thanks to a mechanism incorporated in the lens barrel, smooth focusing operation in Manual focus mode is realized in the same way as users have become accustomed to with conventional manual-focus lenses by adding an appropriate torque to the focus ring.

A gem indeed Being a hobbyist, I find the lens excellent. Autofocus is good (with my D7000), VR works fine, excellent bokeh and light weight. Colour representation & contrast is nice. Macro capability is awesome at 0.28X, and I am using very cheap (1$) macro add-on filter with it and got some acceptable result. Con is it is not a low light lens, doesn't work with FX bodies. I personally never used its heavier sister the 70-300 VR so cannot compare the two. November 24, 2012
Great All in One Lens This lens can do it all. I used to carry and swap the 18-55mm lens with this one. The lens is very light by the way. After a while I noticed that most of my shots were at least 6 to 10 feet away. Perfect for the low end of the 55-300mm range of this lens. Plus when I take it to sporting events the 300mm allows me to stay in the bleachers. Alot of our friends have the 200mm lens and have to get alot closer for the same shots. The image stabilizer allows for crisp action photos at any distance. October 17, 2011
Lens I wanted a lens that would get close up from far away. This lens really is better then I expected. April 22, 2014
Good Investment I have this lens recommended by a photographer in Best Buy and show me why this one was better than the 55-200mm. I'm glad that I heard his arguments because I love this lens and has a good range for the price. I am not a expert in photography but seeing and making some research in the internet has help to understand more this art. I will say a most have if you want to take pictures of animals. February 25, 2014
Great features! The lens is great, the VR is great the quality is EXELLENT. I have taken many photos with it combined with my D3100 and they are a great combo! December 19, 2013

Answer:
Yes it will, the D5200 doesn't have a built in focus motor so it requires AF-S or the older AF-I lenses that have built in focus motors.

Answer:
Yes and no. If you shoot in DX crop mode you will only be getting about 5 megapixels. If you shoot in FX mode you will suffer from vignetting since the lens is a DX lens you will not be using all of the image.
You would be better off with the AF-S 70-300 as itis a full frame lens.

Answer:
Yes, the AF-S DX NIKKOR 55-300mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR works with the D600.
However, the AF-S DX NIKKOR 55-300mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR lens is not recommended for D600 because the lens will not cover the full image area of the sensor inside of the D600.
The D600 is FX format but the lens is DX format. Please see the link below for more infomation.

Yes it is tele zoom as for the maximum distance there is no set answer as it depends on what you are trying to shoot, how far away it is etc. Have a look at the lens simulator as it will give you an idea of what the lens you are after can do.

Answer:
It is normal that you cannot override the autofocus setting on the 55-300mm lens while the switch is on A. Unlike the AF-S 18-200mm which has the setting of M/A (Autofocus Manual Override) and A (Autofocus), the AF-S DX NIKKOR 55-300mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR does not have M/A. The switch has A and M. Autofocus or Manual focus only.

Answer:
The AF-S DX Nikkor 55-200mm f/4-5.6G ED compact rod-type Silent Wave Motor (SWM) enables ultra-high speed auto focusing with exceptional accuracy and super-quiet operation. Two Extra-low Dispersion (ED) glass elements achieve minimized chromatic aberration and superior optical performance. The AF-S DX 55-300mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR reach 300mm super-telephoto with clarity and sharpness, thanks to built-in VR II (Vibration Reduction) image stabilization. In addition, the new High Refractive Index (HRI) lens—a first for the NIKKOR lineup—achieves clear, high-contrast images at every aperture and focal length yet contributes to making the lens body slim and compact.

Answer:
There isn't different versions mechanically, but there are lenses produced for the US market. These carry a one year warranty and when you register the lens on Nikonus.com the warranty is extended to 5 years. On the side of the lens there is a serial number, on the US lenses the number is proceeded by US.
