Great All in One Lens
This lens can do it all. I used to carry and swap the 18-55mm lens with this one. The lens is very light by the way. After a while I noticed that most of my shots were at least 6 to 10 feet away. Perfect for the low end of the 55-300mm range of this lens. Plus when I take it to sporting events the 300mm allows me to stay in the bleachers. Alot of our friends have the 200mm lens and have to get alot closer for the same shots. The image stabilizer allows for crisp action photos at any distance.

Can't beat the price
I really recommend the this over it's 55-200mm counterpart. It's beefier and feels more rugged. The metal attachment ring elevates it outta the "cheap" category IMO. The 300mm really comes in to play at this end, Wet lands, parks and wild life take on a whole new meaning when you can fill the frame from a considerable distance. Not to mention just walking around street photos. it's not ridiculously big that it draws attention to yourself, OK a little but not a crazy amount.
This lens actually has VR2. In practice IMO you still need to be steady, and at 300mm in low light at f5.6......forget it, you need a tripod or something to rest the camera on. Images are sharp and look great, focus is quick and accurate. Unless your some kinda serious pro this lens is more than gets the job done. I recommend totally. One last thing it comes with the simple round hood, I wish it came with the cooler looking "flower" type, that's a oh well whatever not gonna sweat that little point.

Fantastic Range shot, excellent VR.. Love it & Grab it!!!!
I have had the 55-300 for a couple of weeks now and have used it quite a lot on my D3100. This lens I can say pure Class. I do not understand why its rating is so low, the lens should deserve 4.8 at least. The range is better than others, starting at 55mm rather than 70. It is very sharp from 55 through about 200 and better than others at 300. The VR is Great. My D3100 seems to meter very well with it and color is excellent. I highly recommend this lens..

what body are you using? if it's one of the new ones (d3100, d5100 or d7000), or one of the big ones (d700, d3s/d3x), amp up the iso and you may get away with a 70-300 f/4-5.6. if one of the old ones, you need to get hold of a brighter lens (around f/2.8 constant or f/3.5 constant). don't use flash, it doesn't work at such distances. also, a monopod or a tripod with a loose head is good so you won't get tired holding a body with a larger lens, and it also helps with hand tremor.Answer:
mine were not good, but I think mine was a setting issue. I had the Nikkor 55- 200 VR.Doesn't make a difference if you have a great lense when the "user" aka ME, was not prepared.

Will the Lens AF-S DX NIKKOR 55-300mm f/4.5-5.6G ED VR be compatible withh Nikon D5100?
I am a newbie to photography. I own this lens now but I am skeptical about its compatibility with Nikon D5100. I see a Note in the lens manual which states as follows: DX lenses are for use only with DX-format digital single-lens reflex cameras such as the D90 or D300 series.
Can anybody please address this issue ?

Yes it will. This lens has the built in focus motor.....the D80 body does not. AF-S means it uses the Silent Wave Technology focus motor to focus. The 55-300 VR lens is an excellent lens for this camera.Sep 12, 2011 by

This lens is not compatible with any of our current teleconverters since the rear elements of the lens will touch and may damage the elements in the teleconverter. Not all lenses can be used with a teleconverter. In general wide angle lenses or wide angle zoom lenses cannot be used. Also, lenses with relatively slow maximum apertures (slower than f2.8) cannot be used with teleconverters.
Hello,
Wondering which Nikkor lens would be best for kids sport activities (55-200mm or 55-300mm)?
I own Nikon D60 with 18-55mm VR, SB-400 and just placed an order for Nikkor 35mm F1.8 lens, now just need to get the right zoom.
Any idea on which Nikkor lens would focus faster or are they the both the same (55-200mm or 55-300mm)?
55-200mm has a perfect price but 55-300mm seems to be better quality built.
I am on a budget so please do not suggest a 70-200mm F2.8 VR for sports pictures, I love it but can't afford it.
Thank you for any feedback,
Vadim

VR mode jumps after shutter press
Hello, my question is why would the image move abruptly in the viewfinder after the shot is fired then i hear a movement sound. This only happened when VR is on. Is this normal? I get blurred pictures because of this, specially in full zoom. Both lenses do this with the 18-55 and the 55-300 lenses. Is there something wrong with the camera D5100?

Should VR be on or off when using a monopod and a D7000 body with 55-300 lens?
I will be visiting a wildlife park later this summer. From an open top bus I am thinking the monopod will work much better than trying to set up the tripod. I know to turn off the VR on a tripod but did not know about the monopod and don't have a lot of time to experiment before the trip. Thanks

just bought a d3100 for taking pictures of my kids, which lens is more practical and better for me the 55-300 or 70-300?
i've had the d3100 for a year. i've taken some nice pictures of my 2 year old outside playing and a couple of nice indoor portraits with a backdrop. i'd like to buy a flash (been researching the sb-700) and a new lens. i've been reading about the 55-300 and 70-300 but not sure which is better for my use. don't want to spend the extra $200 if the 55-300 is just as good for what i need it for than the 70-300. also any comments on flashes i'd appreciate. was looking at sb-600 before but heard tha was discontinued.
