Great Lens I had Sigma 85mm f1.4 for a few days and I didn't like it because it had too much C.A. problems. I returned it and I bought this Nikon Lens. Simply put this lens is smaller, lighter, quieter and shaper without too much C.A. than Sigma. I am a happy owner of this lens. August 2, 2011
Amazing bokeh and perfect focal lenght! I am a wedding photographer and was looking for a lens that would give me that "creme de leche" bokeh effect. The subjects just pop out of the page. Lens is a tad slow on focusing, nothing like the speed of the 70-200 vr II, but it does the job. As far as low light photography it dominates second to none. Canon has the f1.2, but the bokeh is equal and the nikon is much faster. Def buy, every penny will be worth the investments to bring your photography to the next level July 21, 2011
The results are excellent!!! This is one surefooted piece of glass that rarely misses. Every time I use it I feel like I’ve got something special in my hands. The photographs always look sharp and the bokeh is dreamy. It’s not the fastest focusing lens I have, but it’s one of the most accurate I’ve ever used, tested, rented or borrowed. If you’re serious about getting great results, this is a must have. July 10, 2011
Fantastic Lens This lens is very nice. I knew it would be good but I was still blown away at how well it worked in low light. Pictures are crisp and focus is perfect. Has a little problem locking on to focus in dark situations but other than that it is perfect. If you are thinking about it you won't be disappointed when you purchase it. May 18, 2011
Still picking myself up I don't use this lens as often as I use the 24 f/1.4 --but when I put this 85 on my D700 I simply fall over. Then it seems to be the only lens I use for a while, until I go wide again. It's that good. Outstanding clarity. Beautiful mood and bokeh. I say mood because this lens also seems to deliver it! AF is rock solid even in low light and low contrast. I was lucky and got one of the first copies of this lens--and it was perfect--no issues with it at all. I love this lens. I really do--and you will too. It's expensive, sure, but you get what you pay for. And while all my lenses are sharp -- this one is the king of sharpness. May 12, 2011
Stellar Lenses This is a must have product. This lens produces stellar photos especially regarding creating creaming bokeh and no coma. This is the longest focal length f1.4 in the line up. The only lens that produces better sharpness and bokeh is the 200 f2 (love that lens too!). The autofocus is accurate at f1.4 every time and never misses (do some research, that is amazing). It is not lighting fast, but accuracy is more important than speed. Once you use this in field you will never go back. I have this lens on my camera more often than anything else (indoors, outdoors, kids, portraits, & select sports). April 30, 2011
This is a solid winner! My experience with this lens has been most gratifying. It optically out performs all of my other Nikon 85MM f1.4 lenses by a considerable margin. It is a very well constructed lens. April 15, 2011
Great Lens for portraiture The new Nikkor 85mm F1.4G lens is great to work with. I found it to be great in low light situations for short telephoto use as well as in portraiture sessions, with and without the use of flash. Highly recommended. April 14, 2011
New Favorite Lens! This lens has instantly become my new favorite! The bokeh and images it produces are the best I've ever been able to produce, and it exudes confidence in my picture taking. I'm very happy with my 85 f/1.4G, and highly recommend it if you want the best. April 14, 2011
Excellent portrait lens Maybe I have previous version of 85mm/1.4 (I have it more than 1 year) but this lens makes incredibly sharp snaps. It focuses without any troubles on my D3 model. What a pity all lenses are far not as good. I have excellent portraits with this lens on D3 made on really poor light. You can take it to any theatre or rock concert without any flash and you have more than good chance for excellent exciting snaps. If you have lot of money and you do not know what to do with it, buy it! Price use to be a frequent disease of Nikkor lenses... April 14, 2011
Razor Sharp - Edge to Edge Phenomenal prime lens. The bokeh was creamy and great separation from a subject, as if the picture was in 3D. Excellent in low light situation. A must have for taking portrait. Outstanding piece of glass! March 20, 2011
Best of the Best This Lens is one of Nikons Best. I have no complaints about it at all...period.....well it was expensive. I feel that the portraits I get from this lens are better than anything else I have ever shot with. Its sturdy built, great manual focusing, and industry beating optics are a cut above. Most people cant tell the difference between this and the 70-200 portraits unless they are looking....but when they are looking they are impressed. March 2, 2011
Terrific Lens I got rid of my Noct f/1.2 to get this for low light street photography mostly. Slight loss of speed, but I no longer have problems with sensor reflections. I am using this on my D700 and it is easily the sharpest lens I have. Some effort is required to get it to auto-focus wide open, but that is not unexpected. I switch to manual if I have to and it does a good job there. Creamy, creamy bokeh gives images that stand out in the crowd. January 23, 2011
Great lens This new 85mm lens is superb in every way. I purchased this lens to replace the 85 1.4 d. The build quality is solid and I found the focus to be quick and accurate. The sharpness and bokeh are absolutely exquisite, razor sharp-so sharp in fact that you may have to retouch some things you wouldn't normally see. Worth every penny. November 12, 2010
Professional Lens I call it professional lens because you need to know how to handle it. This lens works great when you use it for certain conditions that a seasoned photographer would recognize easily, for example this lens is superb at shooting what i call catalog portarits with good light, i shot some that dropped my jaw. But it won't just shoot anything alone it needs you to take good decisions, the f1.4 will help to achieve small DoF that looks great but it dosen't mean that you will shoot a candle in the dark and it will be perfect, you need a tripod for that. If you are used to vr you will feel it. Here you can find examples of good and bad pictures I took from it. The lens did its job, the quality of the pictures when shoot correctly are simply amazing! October 22, 2010
not the worst lens I use super nice lens, I use it for getting great facebook shoots and the good news is that it has the quality to keep up with the others on Facebook September 26, 2010
State of the art sharpness and color An 85mm f/1.4 lens is about portraiture, or so it is often said. Nikon describes it as a “classic portrait lens”. But in truth it is not really a “classic” portrait lens other than focal length, because its performance is distinctly better than many classic designs, with outstanding sharpness across the frame even wide open at f/1.4. The color, contrast and sharpness even wide open at f/1.4 at least meet, and perhaps exceed, any existing 85mm f/1.4 lens on the market today, including Zeiss and Canon. A truly impressive performer. Although an 85mm is ostensibly for portraiture, this new Nikon 85mm will make an outstanding landscape and general purpose lens. September 25, 2010
The Legend Continues Having used the 85mm f1.4 AF, 105mm f2.5 and 2.8 macro, this latest Nikon offering beats them all with respect to DOF, edge sharpness and focussing speed. Beautiful bokeh that surpasses all previous portrait lenses. Neutral color, little glare. The very best. Highly recommended jewel for amateurs and essential workhorse for pros. Get one now! September 24, 2010
great body and great features love the features and i love the body.. any pro will love this lense.. August 22, 2010
Did not deliver with this one One of the selling points on this lens is that it is ultra-fast. Of the five lenses I own, this one is the slowest and I cannot understand why? This lens was just released and because of that specially ordered at a local camera store and after a substantial dent in the bank account, I'm afraid I will not be able to use it. I hope I can return it. I've had it for three days. October 9, 2010

Answer:
Hey, the 85/1.4 AF-S is a really nice lens, and it has its uses, but pairing it with a TC is not one of the ones that comes to mind. But I know where you're coming from, wanting a fast, long prime for indoor sports and such. Consider instead the 105 or 135/2 DC lenses for your purpose. I've shot a number of cheerleading competitions using the 105/2 DC, and it works very well for the purpose.

Answer:
According to the Teleconverter compatability chart that can be found on Nikon's Teleconverter page this lens is not compatable. However, both the 100DC and 135DC lenses are f/2 lenses within the range you are looking. Both have incredible optics and might serve you well. The 135 DC f/2 sells for $1395, so it would be significantly cheaper than the 85 f/1.4 with a TC. In fact you could buy both the 135 DC f/2 and the 85mm f/1.8 for less than the 85mm f/1.4G & a TC-14E.

No, B&H, Adorama, and any other major retailers don't carry this lens. I had to search the ends of the earth to find this thing. I recommend calling every camera small store in the U.S till find one (smaller cities like st.louis, milwakee, etc.).

If I am correct, when I wanted a 90 mm lens for portrait photography, I used a 60. I've been waiting for the D4X but when I saw the D3200, I bought it thinking it could hold me over until the D4X release.

I am about to buy the AF-S NIKKOR 85mm f/1.4G which will on the D3200 function as an 85 mm (ideal for portrait) but when I finally get to buy the D4X, will then that lens function as an 85 mm X 1.5 and not ideal for portraits.

I am under the impression that the DX series box makes the lens 1.5 X as long but that the D3200 does not. I don't want a 85 mm at $1700 that will become 1.5 X longer when place on the coming D4X.

I may be just confused and if so, I apologize.

Answer:
You have it reversed, the 85mm on the d3200 will have a focal length of approx 127mm this is because the d3200 is a DX camera, the D4( or x when produced) are full frame FX lenses.
