I am the Biggest Nikon Fan! I have used Nikon lenses since late 1980s..I have used older lenses like 80-200mm f/2.8D for a long time, also used the 70-200mm f/2.8 VRI for a while and finally upgraded to NEW 70-200mm f/2.8 VRII..All I have to say is that this lens is 'SUPER FANTASTIC'..simply the BEST telephoto lens for portrait work. July 11, 2012
A Must have Ladies and Gents, if you are looking for a sport action lens, a portrait lens, then do yourself a favor and get this bad boy. You will take your photograph to a whole new level. In short, "Just do IT!" July 10, 2012
Excellent lens as usual I just got this lens last weekend and man am I impressed. Absolutely gorgeous images, my subjects 'pop' out of the frame. The colors and contrast are amazing. Yes this an expensive, heavy, large lens, but thats what pro equipment is. If you're considering this lens just buy it, you won't be disappointed. June 8, 2012
This is a fabulous lens I got this lens about 6 months ago. I have found it is my "go to" lens for a myriad of photo applications. One things that I found to be a little surprising was it makes for a great close up lens. Zoom up to 200mm focal length and then open it to f2.8 and get razor sharp subjects and luxurious bokeh. Stop it down to f8 or so and get a beefy DOF with almost no evidence of diffraction effects. June 5, 2012
Favorite NIKKOR I am totally blown away by Nikon's newest VR II version. The VR II really does seem to be 'magical,' and will certainly help your low-light or tougher shots where extra support is unavailable. It's a beast to carry around, so the higher end bodies (or a grip) is very helpful, but the astounding image, build, and general quality is more than worth it. May 19, 2012

Answer:
both are OK, active is a mode that you use when you shoot video and you're doing a panning shot -- active "realizes" that you're panning and it doesn't try to compensate in the panning direction.

I have two questions regarding this expensive lens (product id number 2185) for my Nikon D2XS dslr camera ...

1) This lens is advertised as a fixed aperature lens. Yet the specs indicate that the aperture range is from f2.8 to f22. So my question is: if this is a fixed aperture lens why do you specify that it can be stopped down to f22? Is this a mistake on the specs? Or is it possible to adjust the aperture if I desire all the way down to f22?

2) I want to be absolutely certain that I can use this lens with my D2XS which is a DX format camera. Please be absolutely sure of your reply.

Thank you very much!

Answer:
1) Fixed aperture lens isn't a right word for this product. I would say "the aperture remains constant at any focal length. For example: you set aperture to f/2.8 at 70mm and when you zoom to 200mm, the aperture will remains at f/2.8. However, you can adjust the aperture to 3.5, 4, 5.6, 8 up to 22 for the smallest aperture. No, it's not Nikon's mistake.

2) Yes, it fully functions on D2Xs, however, D2Xs is a DX format camera which means the 70-200 will scales up to 105-300mm due to the crop factor.

Answer:
1. Fixed aperture means and no matter the zoom range you set the lens you can still set it up for f/2.8 but it can also adjust up to f22.
2. Yes, this lens is compatible with the D2xs. Click on the linck below for information on FX and DX format:

Do you mean the Nikon 70-200 f/2.8 VR ( I or II) lens? I don't think there is a replacement for the tripod foot. The only way you can find is on eBay - if there is any.

I am a prospective Nikon customer hoping to purchase the D800 or D7000 with selective lenses. It is my understanding that some Nikon telephoto lenses creep when pointed up or down. I would like to know which lenses have this problem and what Nikon is doing, if anything, to eliminate the problem.

Answer:
Hi
I have owned the previous version of this lens for 5 years.
Have never experienced "lens Creep". with the Nikon Pro model lenses,
they have internal focus and focal adjustment, therefore I believe there will never be lens creep
because all is internal. I own and older version of the 70-300mm, non pro lens and only experienced
"lens creep" once or twice. I believe any of the "pro" f/2.8 or lower lenses will never have a worry of lens creep.
Hope this helps.
Wish you success in your purchase and welcome to Nikon...

Answer:
I can only speak for myself. I've never experienced that problem with my 70-200, nor with any other Nikkor zoom lens. If I had, the lens would have gone back to Nikon for repair. I would expect any heavily used, nose heavy lens to loosen up over time, necessitating factory adjusting. My three year old 70-200 is used 7 days a week, 4 to 12 hours during the summer. In winter usage drops to a couple of hours a week. I do not work in hot weather extremes when the different components might expand or contract causing creep so I can't address that situation. Nor have I experienced the problem in below zero temperatures.

I believe you can use this lens, most all Nikkor lenses are compatible with Nikon cameras,
I believe you can find a listing of compatible lenses on page for your camera or on page with the lens you want...
I would highly recommend the 70-200mm, I own the previous version for 5 years now and it is perfect.
Hope this helps.

I have been looking at this lens as well as the 24-70 f2.8. Right now my funds for a lens are on the limited side and since I don't do photography professionally and don't have a high income, i need to build my lens collection slowly. Which would be better for me to start with? this one or the 24-70 f2.8? I do a good deal of outdoor portraits and nature photography as well so I know this one would work great for those. I'm just concerned about the minimum focal length on this one being a problem for doing indoor photography. Any advise on which would be the better starting point to build from?

I have the D90 with this lens AF-S NIKKOR
70-200mm f/2.8G ED VR II . For the most part I get great images. I wonder if I have a lot more lens than camera at times. I feel that a faster camera especially in the auto focus part may help me more. I miss some shots that are out of focus. I like the video option on the D90. I paid about 1000.00 or little more for it and a kit lens included. What would be a great upgrade without spending 2 thousand dollars. I want to keep the video capability. I want a fast focus and trigger. what are some thoughts that may bring my camera up to my lens? Thanks

Taking videos with D7000

I started with the same setting that I used with my Nikon 55-200mm f/4-5.6G AF-S DX VR IF-ED. That setting always gives me great videos. For whatever reason it did not work well with this lens. I experimented with different focus and aperture settings, and a long story short, videos came out blurry, it was hard to focus at the widest zoom, I was able to get a sharp video only when got closer to 200mm. During recording all looked sharp on a monitor, but when I downloaded on my computer I was quite surprised, could not believe the results. The environment was an indoor pool, not easy but as I said my 55-200mm lens always performed very well and gave me very nice videos. This time I hoped I will get perfect photos as well as great videos, but unfortunately that was not the case. Any suggestions? Thank you.
