Great lens, a must have for low light.
If you want a lens that is light in weight, this is the one. It has been awesome in shooting where there is not very good lighting. It is a lens that I will have around for many years to come. Great lens.

My best and favorite lens to use !
Stays on the D3100 all the time.I got 3 lenses except the kit lens and this is my favorite one. since I had the 35mm range covered by the 18-55 kit, I though I don't need this one.Reading all the awesome reviews about it I decide to buy it, because it is inexpensive. What I like about it is that it is tough, light,small, does no need VR (saves me battery) colors are great, it is very sharp, I love the depth of field, the bokeh I like, even the pro- photogs say it is not very good.What I do not like about it is... hm, I don't know, I'm not a pro photographer ,who knows what, a super expensive 35mm(or 50mm FX) prime can do, but I think this 35mm prime is AWESOME ! Everyone who has a DX body have to make him/her self very happy with one of these !!!

Great inexpensive "normal" lens
Using this lens on my D7000 is a joy, mainly because of its light weight, small size and quiet operation. Using it in either still or movie mode, it focuses fast and accurately and is quick enough for stage lighting conditions. The manual focus is easy and fast too, and allows for beautiful bokeh in either still or movie mode at the more open settings.

Impressive Lens
Purchased the lens today and right away I was impressed.
Took a photo of the salesman and it was an awesome shot and then went to the outdoor mall and started checking out various targets.
I am really happy with this lens and know that it will produce the detailed product I am wanting to achieve. Looking forward to taking pictures at the upcoming weddings.... [Go Ahead - GET it! You won't be disappointed]

Outstanding lens
The 35 1.8 G has outstanding sharpness corner to corner. No discernable viganetting or pincushoning. Color rendition is outstanding. Focus is fast and quiet. A must have lens.

What a nifty lens!
I think I have a new favorite lens.....First and foremost, the price point for this lens is reasonably inexpensive, especially being a Nikon product. It is worth every penny. The pictures this lens produces are crisp and colorful. Portraits turn out beautifully and close-ups are sharp. This lens is easy to use regardless of your level of experience.

Excellent lens for DX cameras
I've had this lens for nearly 6 months now and I love it. This is a great low light lens. I can take shots indoors without flash very easily. The wide aperature also allows me to blur the background in a very pleasing way. The lens is very sharp. Sharper then the 55-105mm kit lens on the D90. There is slight distortion around the edges of the frame, but that is not a big deal to me. Its not enough to notice unless shooting very rectangular objects. This lens a great lens at a great price. Every DX owner should have this lens.

Great lens, great price
If you are looking for a good wide aperture lens, but don't have a lot of money to spend, this lens is a great option. It doesn't have some of the nice features like VR and ED glass, but for $200, it's a great way to get a wide aperture lens. The ability to blur the background has really improved a lot of my images already.

Most used lens on my D3100
Best one I have. Sharp, high resolution, low light (f1.8) capability, manual override of auto focus, no movement of front lens, silent focus. Like a eye of a photographer. You can move around unnoticed with a light, silent ordinary camera which faithfully recording what you see and recording the way you want. My most used lens. I will confess though that my previous favorite was my Minolta 50mm/1.7 with Maxxum 3Xi although Nikon D3100 with this 35mm/1.7 is much more silent and DSLR increased the low light capability much more.

Clear & Sharp
You don't have to spend fist full of dollars to get a lens that is fast, quiet, sharp and clear. This 35mm lens will out perform any other competitor's 35mm.
It will be even harder to find once people realize its performance.

Sharp as a tack and a steal at the price!
This lens is incredible! For a ridiculously low price you get a super sharp lens that reliably produces excellent images even in low light! This lens is on my D90 camera 90% of the time. If you own a DX camera, you need to add this wonderful lens to your camera bag!

A must have!
I added this lens to the 18-200mm VR II that I use. While I use the zoom lens for travel and outdoor photos I wanted a lens that was faster for indoor and portrait. In using this 35mm 1.8 with my D7000 I rarely have to use a flash. For $200 this is a steal and a must have for every DX user.

great lens
this is another great lens that will give you great results for all types of photography especially portraits, but this lens is listed in the wide angle category I think this is a mistake because it's not a wide angle lens so as long as your not expecting a wide angle lens when you buy this one you'll be very pleased, if you want a wide angle then you'll have to buy a different lens

Remember when Normal was standard?
My first real lens of choice was a top brand 50mm 1.4 on an early good auto-metered slr. If I was smart my shots were sharp. Over the years I was bewitched by the options provided by a range of zoom lens. Today, with this Nikkor 35 mm f1.8 on my D300S I have rediscovered the pleasure and control obtainable with a really good normal lens. Now this is the lens always on my camera and the big zoom only comes out when truly needed.

An absolute Best Buy
When I decided to add a prime lens to my new D7000 purchase I wanted a fast lens that would not exceed my budget. The 35mm 1/8 is the perfect additional lens aquisition. This lens is the world's best buy for under $200. I used it 3 weeks ago at the wedding of my best friends son. Great photographs. I took 200 pictures and believe at least 100 of them are of professional quality. I have shared the photos with many members of the family and I look like a pro.
I was driving up a country highway last week and pulled over to capture an incredable sunrise. I cannot believe the quality. Anyone with $200 to spare must but this lens. You will never regret the purchase.

Awesome lens
I have been absolutely in love with this lens. It's simple, clear and easy to use. The f/1.8 feature does wonders for shooting live music shots in dim lighting. It's light to carry and has replaced my standard f/5.4 lens. It's been a lot fun to use.

Useful
I bought the 35mm f/1.8G lens as a "normal" lens for my D-90. This is a very easy lens to just walk around with. It is light in weight and fast enough to provide good DOF. Sharpness is very good. Emphasis seems to be moving away from primes in today's variety of zoom lenses. The 35mm f/1.8 makes a great addition to any setup.

A basic lens, required by every serious photog.
The lens is intended to fit in my basic kit for portraiture and some close-up animal shots in some low-light views. With limited use, I am pleased with the initial results. I will feel better about it as greater use unfolds. The price is right and the quality meets my needs.

Maybe. This lens will allow you to shoot in lower light conditions than the 18-55mm lens that came with your D3100. This might include shooting indoors without flash and in museums and at shows with fast moving people, assuming you can get close enough. I own one and like it but I also have other more general purpose lenses.I have a feeling that if you have to ask, this lens might not be the right choice for you. A wideangle lens that goes from about 10-20mm will open up a whole new world of photography not available to you now (good for some travel shots, but stitching photos together might also work) and a lens with more reach such as 18-105mm or 18-200mm might have a more immediate benefit. Portrait photos typically use a lens somewhat longer than 55 mm (maybe 85mm on your camera). One thing that is especially nice about the 35 mm lens is its compactness. With this lens I can put my whole camera into a vestpocket pouch and shoot images in an art museum that does not allow flash. I have framed copies of several masterpieces I've taken this way.
Because many people like a little more reach, the kit lenses of cameras that cost a little more come with the 18-105 mm lens. Also there is a 55-200 mm lens that can provide extra reach without duplicating what you already have.

Your camera (D3000) do not have internal auto focus motor, but to have autofocus you can use any Nikkor lenses, which start from "AF-S ...".
All this lenses, including "AF-S DX NIKKOR 35mm f/1.8G", have internal silence auto focus motor.
And that means, that with this lens, your Nikon D3000 will have autofocus, I also can added: very fast , precise auto focus and this lens is really very sharp, very sharp for most price category.

Probably the biggest difference is the aperture, f/1.8 will allow you to shoot in low light situations, and also allow you to blur the background when opening the lens wide.
