Out Does all other 50 1.4 Nikkor's
I have used the Nikkor 50 1.4 all the way back to the non AI lenses. This one is simple, it out does them all.

The one lens to always carry with you.
I have been shooting for over thirty years and I have always had a 50mm 1.4 in my bag. This is one of those reliable, fast and great focus lenses that I can use for landscape, people, action and close-ups.

Tack sharp
Great lens. Tack sharp, great bokeh. Yes, the autofocus is a little slower than you would expect but it's still fine. Wonderful portrait lens.

Wedding Staple
This lens gets a lot of bad press in the forums because it is 1) Plastic, and 2) AFS.
My primary use for this lens is weddings. I have been using it since April 2009. This has become my primary lens. First, I love how light this is because it's plastic. I have some of the older gen lenses and they are great, but they are heavy. You can shoot with this lens all day without noticing it. The AFS performance on my copy is fantastic. I have had no complaints about this lens ever. Instead of doing extensive testing (which has its place), I have shot roughly 20 weddings with this thing. The Bokeh this thing puts out has become essential for my photographical look. I routinely shoot this at 1.4 or 2, and rarely take it past 2.8. It's wonderfully sharp at 1.4, and is rock solid at 2. This lens has some vignetting at 1.4, which is even more pronounced when you add an ND filter (provided you want to shoot 1.4 on a sunny day). As a wedding photographer, I would be adding vignetting in post anyway, so for me this is absolutely ideal.
This lens has become a standard for me, and has changed my photography for the better. If you are thinking about jumping into the Primes camp, or simply want a really really fast standard, this is your lens. If you are shooting DX this functions like the 85mm, but with all the benefits of the AFS (quiet and fast). If you do get this though, be prepared to start pining away for faster glass.

EXCELLENT Portrait lens
As a portrait photographer, low light weddings, etc, this is an excellent lens. The images are amazing! Was a little hard getting used to me moving instead of zooming in or out, but the results are well worth a little more effort on my part! HIGHLY RECOMMEND this piece of glass!

Sharp focus.
Great lens. It does what I expect it to do. It has a sharp image.
I especially like to take pictures in the F8 range inorder to get everything in focus from say 8 feet to 30 feet. I can then pick and chose elements from the picture that I want to enlarge or be a new center of focus. In other words, I can get more pictures from just one photo.
I also like the results when using the F1.4 for available light. Once again, sharp focus.

Top quality prime - sharp edge to edge
I use this lens with a D700 for low-light situations. This is not actually a very useful focal length (for me, at least) on a full-frame body, however, I use it when I need the extra two stops that my 24-70mm does not give me. This lens has received excellent reviews and my own pictures confirm what I've read. The photographer who will most benefit from this lens, I think, is someone shooting with a cropped sensor Nikon. You then end up with a 75mm equivalent f/1.4 razor sharp portrait lens with very attractive bokeh.

Awesome Len

Razor Sharp!
I'm using this lens in combination with a Nikon D3, and use it for everything from weddings, family events to a general walk-around lens. I find it razor sharp at all apertures. I do wish the AF was faster and sometimes I find it "searching" in very low-light conditions...

Excellent affordable 50mm
This was my first AF-S prime lens and I like it almost as much as the price. This lens renders beautiful shallow depth of field images and it is very small and light. It is so portable that I find myself taking it with me almost everywhere.
When used at f/2, this lens becomes extremelly sharp. I enjoy using it with full frame cameras a lot. However, it is also wonderful for portraits in cropped frame bodies because it is similar to an 85mm field of view wise.

The ONE Prime Lens in Pack
If you want a prime lens in your pack for a FX camera, this is it. Nothing else.
July 30, 2010
nice depth of field
I still consider myself a novice in terms of photography, with this being the first fast prime lens I have bought. With a D90, it is possible to obtain very sharp images with manual focus or focusing using Live View. When it is wide open, the lens has a very shallow depth of field, which I like. I took a picture of my tie rack (angled at 45º with respect to the camera), focusing on the middle tie at f/1.4. The middle tie is sharp, with the surrounding ties (near and far) out of focus. The depth of field is only a couple of centimeters! (Yes, I'm a scientist.) I haven't had the chance to evaluate bokeh yet.
I have found the lens sluggish in autofocus, although it is reasonably quick in bright light. Forget about using Dynamic area in poor light, however. I have experienced a lot of hunting, even at higher ASA. Maybe other users have suggestions that I haven't tried, however.
The sharpness is fantastic, which was a pleasant surprise considering this isn't a pro lens.

Pros:
Fast, Sharp and light weight lens for DSLR camera.
Cons:
a bit pricy

Great Lens
This lense is great in so many applications. Great in low light conditions, sharp pictures, without VR you have to hold it steady or use a tripod. One of my favorite lenses for portraits.

A "must have" lens...light, reliable, excellent quality...a great lens and very fair price...

Often Replaces My 16-85mm at 50mm
While I appreciate the flexibility of my Nikkor 16-85mm f/3.5-5-6 zoom lens, the 50mm f/1.4G has become my new "walkaround" lens, since most of my history has been taking pictures in the 40-65mm range (on my D300s). I tried the D version of this glass as well as the 35mm f/1.8, and both were excellent, image-wise. The 1.4G, however, is best characterized as "outstanding" for its middle-priced components.

Very Nice Lense
Chose this lens for its low light and portrait capabilities; has not disappointed!
July 30, 2010
Outstanding
I love this lens! I have it mounted on one of my D700s and it never comes off. I know I'll get tack sharp images every time and I don't have to check the LCD to make sure. I just know so I can keep shooting. I photograph a lot of kids and this lens, focused on their eyes, really captures the moment. Buy it!!

Somewhat slow AF but a Fantastic lens nonetheless
This is a fantastic lens, I was hoping for a bit quicker AF speed, it feels slower than my 50mm f/1.8, but the end result is great. Usably sharp wide open and extremely sharp by f/2.
A great lens
July 10, 2010
Amazing
I love this so much i take it everywhere i go. It is super sharp. I love the auto focus, it works amazingly with my D3100. Its a great beginner lens, i would highly suggest this for people beginning because of how well it works. Honestly great product.

A valuable tool as long as you understand the limits of wide aperture shooting
I don't see it as being any sharper than my 24-70, but it's much less obtrusive and easier to handle around delicate objects and in restaurants. A nice piece of glass esp. if you need the wider aperture.
One caveat when shooting food or other up close subjects at f/1.4: you will not believe how shallow the depth of field is. This can be a good or bad thing depending on what you're doing. The more distant the subject, the less of an issue this becomes.

Defective lens replaced under warranty
I originally purchased this lens in Dec., 2010. I was only using my D3s and this lens for still photography; however, in the spring of 2011, there was a need to shoot video. The 50 mm lens that I purchased demonstrated a product defect only realized when shooting video. A complete investigation of this problem in conjunction with Nikon Service/Support was very time consuming and frustrating; however, my dealer eventually replaced the lens under warrenty. The replacement lens is fine in all respects.

very sharp...but...
love this lens in most circumstances. i use manual about 80-90% of the time. super sharp, nice bokeh, fast. but....
i havn't found that the auto focus responds really fast. i don't have any other auto focus nikon lenses to base it off of so i can't say if that is all nikon's or just this one.

My favorite portrait lens on APS-C
If I am going to be taking pictures of people (read grandkids) this is the lens I want on my D90. It could focus a little faster, but this lens gets the results I want, allowing me to control depth of field and shoot in existing light.

Sharp sweet lens
Love the lens for all portraits - Fast, Sharp focus, nice bokeh, and reasonable price ( for 1.4 when you are not a pro), makes this a favorite lens

Great low light and standard lens
Great lens! I find I use it more and more for portraits. Makes great photos in available light. Perfect for the times you want to use the available light to set mood or you don't want to haul light stands and strobes. Absolutely saved me when my flash failed and I was shooting for a client.

Great Glass...not perfect...worth the upgrade?
I upgraded this lens from the 50 1.4D. Its autofocus is more accurate and quiet but slower than the D on my d700 bodies. The 50 1.4 D would often miss shots below 2.8 and thats why i upgraded. Image quality is similar to the old mode. I wish that nikon offered a more substantial 50mm like the 85 1.4g and 24mm 1.4 g that I own and are better performing wide open and I like the fidelity and speed of prime lenses. I do recommend this lens as its an excellent lens in low light compared to the other D model 50mm lenses and I wont sell it unless Nikon offers a better alternative. The Canon L version my brother owns is better but costs an arm and a leg. When you do this for money, you want the best.

Four and a half stars
The lens has very good optics in terms of sharpness, colors, contrast and bokeh. The Auto Focus feature is not accurate to a point that I do all the focusing manually. Despite the f/1.4 aperture it would have been nice to have a VR feature to enhance the lens performance under taxing light conditions.

I'm not pretty sure if the 35mm DX will have the 52.5mm in a DX camera. Since it's a DX lens, 35mm will stay 35mm when mounted in a DX format camera.Jan 2, 2012 by

Answer:
No, the reason the image is cropped because the sensor in a DX camera is smaller than an that of a FX camera (35mm) and overall has a much narrower angle of view at the same focal length. All APS-C cameras have this problem (canon crops to 1.6x with most of their DSLR cameras). If you where using a FX camera, with a DX lens you can set the camera to use the DX lens but because of the size of the sensor you get around half the MP because not all the sensor is being used.
If you want to shoot at 50mm, I would suggest getting the 35mm 1.8G DX which is the equivalent of 52.5mm lens.
Answer:
So It will automatically display FX in DX crop mode right? Is there is anyway to fix this, for I would like to shoot photo with normal view angle of 50mm.Dec 8, 2011 by

Answer:
Nikon DX cameras have a crop of 1.5x. So the 50mm does become the equivalent of a 75mm lens.

This is normal, because in an auto mode it's more likely to have an 1/60 and an 2.8 depending on the illumination. So try to use it in semi or manual modes :)Jun 10, 2011 by

You didn't give in enought info but it sounds like you are testing the lens at a low light conduction (may be indoor?) and thecamera had gone in to a flash mode when you try you lens out.
When the Flash is on on the camera the camera try to contro the brightness of the photo by controing how much flash power it will user rather then contro the shutter speed and aperture

Don't know what camera you are using. But it sounds like you are testing it in low light (maybe indoor?) and the camera have switch you flash light on. Try to close the flash light and try again

I use this with the D700. The g has two benefits.1. It has the latest optics enhancements
2. It has the g's M/A focus. This allows you to press the button to autofocus, but then correct the focus manually without switching to manual on the camera. This is a huge time saver and will frequently help you capture that fleeting shot when the focus needs to be somewhere other than the autofocus thinks it should be.
