CAUTION - Dont buy it refurbished Purchased refurbished lens from Nikon Store. BIG MISTAKE!! Lens would not manually focus without binding in the mid ap range. Expected much more quality from a NIKON refurb but QC obviously lacking in the lens refurb department. When I used it via auto focus it worked great - color, focus quality, etc. was superb! Bottom line - purchase this lens NEW with a full warranty and be sure to use AMX or other credit card with buyer protection feature. September 2, 2011
Love this lens Great lens for taking close ups of all kind for things. Makes nice portraits June 30, 2011
A great lens I really like this lens. It's my default lens for digital photography because I like the focal length (on my D40), close focus capabilities and fast aperture. It is exactly what I was looking for. Much easier than having to screw on close-up lenses and remove them again. It is a really impressive piece of craftsmanship compared to the plastic mount kit lens. It is hefty and solid and the focus ring is smooth and comfortable. I like the versatility of this lens. It may be a little soft and have some light fall off wide open at infinity, but it performs well beside just as a macro lens. It works as a nice portrait lens. In the macro range it is amazingly sharp. The working distance at 1:1 is very short (under two inches, I believe) which can cause problems (scaring your subjects and blocking the light, for example) but I can work around that. My lens does tend to hunt for focus (from infinity to 1:1 and back) if it is not already close, and sometimes even when it is already in focus--but all you need to do is twist the focus ring to override the auto focus. I think this might be more my D40 body (probably needs to be cleaned) than the lens. The maximum aperture does decrease as you focus down, down to f/4.8 at 1:1. This is not a bad thing. It is a small price to pay for the internal focusing and no externally moving parts. I wish the filter threads were the old Nikon standard 52mm instead of the overgenerous 62mm filter threads, which look out of place compared to the tiny front element. The front element is fairly vulnerable, especially compared to the 55mm f/2.8 AI-S lens I recently acquired, the front element of which is deeply recessed and shaded by the barrel of the lens. However, even without the hood the 60mm f/2.8 AF-S is remarkably immune to flare or ghosts, probably because of the nano coating. July 30, 2010
mediocre at best I would be moving the manufacture of all lenses back to Japan for tighter quality control. Your quality in lens design has slipped. Possibly too much plastic and not enough glass. April 14, 2011

Answer:
There are some problems with the auto focus with this lens and the D7000. It has a lot of trouble focusing on subjects that are initially far out of focus. You can manually adjust the focus near the subject, then use auto focus to get it right though. It's very strange.
