No better lens for the money (Part 2)
This lens is often sold as a kit combo together with the 18-55mm. I think they are the two best lenses for the money you will ever buy.
For under these two lenses do 90% of what you can do with the 24-70mm f/2.8 and the 70-200mm VR f/2.8 (both of which I own and love) AT 1/10th the price (and a combined 19oz vs. a combined 84oz)!!!
Unless you are doing professional-type photography (i.e., sports, birds, low light, etc.), this will do almost everything an amateur could hope for.
A lot of people turn up their nose at this lens because it is so inexpensive, instead buying a much more expensive one that they do not need or fully use.

Love the VR
This is one of my first autofocus lenses. Its great for nature photography is lightweight and compact in size. I was able to capture a deer in low light at 1/40 sec at 200mm because of the vibration reduction feature which I couldn't do with my manual focus lenses without a tripod.

Excellent VR lens at a reasonable price
The pictures are sharp and have good color. The lens has a lot of plastic, but has excellent glass which is what counts. I am very pleased with the performance of the lens and it is very reasonable priced. The lens being small does not attract much attention. I have the 70-200mm f2.8 VR lens which is much larger and does attract peoples attention. Is the 55-200mm lens as sharp? No but the quality of the pictures is still very good

Everyone needs this lens. Carry-ability is the key
This lens is one of the most underrated lenses in the Nikon line up. It is positively indispensable. This lens gives you amazing image quality, fantastic VR and the most important fact is that this lens is super light and easy to take anywhere you want.
I love going to zoos, i own the 70-200 2.8, and yet I always bring the 55-200 vr to zoos and only sometimes bring the 70-200. It's a huge pain in the neck (literal and figurative) to drag around a 3.2 pound lens around for a 5 hour trip. The 55-200 vr is just an ouce over half a pound and slips into a shoulder bag and adds minimal fatigue. I'll bring around this lens and the 35 1.8 and have a day of shooting where I focus on enjoying myself and taking good shots rather than how much my neck hurts and where can I put my camera bag down.
The vr with this lens allows you to take shots down to 1/8th if you hold very still and 1/15 with relative ease. This makes the slower aperture very easy to deal with. The plastic mount is a bit worrying but a quick trip to nikon and it will come back like new if the emergency arises. I can't recommend this lens more highly, because the lens you have with you is the most important lens you have, and this lens can always find a place to come along.

Good value for the price
I enjoy casual photography of most anything. This lens allows me to be as flexible as I need..to bring in far landscape and nature shots, as well as making close ups of birds and butterflies just pop out on the images.
Love it.

Good lens at a good price
I love this lens. It works great for long distance shots like landscapes and such. The only problem I have with it is that it is heavy, but that's expected. If shooting with the higher zooms, make sure to have a tripod. Even with the VR, at 200, the images come out a little shaky. Other than that, it's great and it will most likely last me a long time.

Good High Power Zoon
This is my first high power/tele zoon which I mainly use for nature and birds photography. I would reccommend this lens (AF-S DX VR Zoom-NIKKOR 55-200mm f/4-5.6G IF-ED) as a very good first tele zoom. The VR is really a saver in critical situations.

Love this lens
This lens is great for getting close-ups of people. It also works well at special events such as graduations, concerts, races, whenever you want to get a closer view. I love this lens, but if I had to do it all again, I would purchase the 18 mm - 200 mm - F/3.5-5.6 because I find myself constantly switching between by 18-55 and this one.

definitely worth it
I purchased this lens in addition to the D5000 kit (which included the 18-55mm VR lens), & am so happy I did. This lens is essential when shooting kids playing, school events, concerts, distant scenery, etc. I have been very pleased; images have been clear with no blur. If you are looking at jumping into the DSLR world, do your self a favor & get this lens from the beginning. If you don't, you will soon wish you had, as the 18-55 lens is a good lens, but doesn't have the zoom you will need for most everyday photos (unless you shoot in close range exclusively).
This lens is almost always the one I leave on my camera!

Quality Lens
Very easy to use, accurate, great zoom, and great picture results.

Great lens
This lens has all the features I want ... it is lightweight, easy to use, the vibration reduction is excellent (I've shot from boats and planes), and the image quality and automatic features are just great.

Great lens for a beginning photographer
I decided to buy a Nikon D-80 just as it was being discontinued. I was fortunate enough to have it bundled with this lens and a AF-S Nikkor 18-55mm VR f/3.5-5.6G.
I end up using the 55-200mm lens the most and it does everything I expect. If it has flaws they are not apparent to me. I would recommend this lens for beginning photographers.

Great Lens
This lens is great for almost every setting that I have tried such as sunsets, some super shots of wildlife that I have gotten, and seems to be very nice for pretty much any family photos. It is not bulkey and is easly cleaned. I can't think of any reason not to buy this lens and recomend it very highly for the beginner to the professional.

Excellant Lens
This lens as with all of Nikon lenses are great lenses.

Great Beginner Zoom
I bought this zoom to get me started with my Nikon D3000. For the money, it's a great zoom with great features. It takes super sharp, clear images. The max aperture leaves something to be desired for indoor photography, but it's not bad. Just make sure you've got the VR on and hopefully your subject isn't moving too quickly.
Overall I'm very pleased with the lens.

Excellent Addition for My D5000
Great lens. After using it for the past 3 months, the more I use it the more I appreciate its features. I would recommend this to anyone using the D5000.

Good Value
This lens has excellent image quality, and the VR helps to use it in lighting situations where the aperture would otherwise be insufficient. Focusing is fast and smooth. It is also light and compact. For the money, it is an excellent lens.
What you do give up, however, is the build quality. I am confident that this lens, handled gently, will give many years of service. However, if you plan on using it in rough and demanding situations, it may not hold up.

Quick autofocus, high res, high value lens.
Works very well with D3000 for yardbirds, cats, squirrels and with a +1 close-up add on lens good for flowers, insects etc. Good for distant cityscapes at night and sunrise/sunset scenes. Worth Every Penny!
