Convenient telephoto coverage with Vibration Reduction (VR)

The Nikon AF-S DX VR Zoom-NIKKOR 55-200mm f/4-5.6G IF-ED is an ideal telephoto zoom lens for those seeking a lightweight all-in-one lens or a companion lens for the 18-55mm kit lens that came with their camera. Vibration Reduction (VR) significantly reduces camera shake throughout the entire focal length, making sharp telephoto shots substantially easier to achieve. An ideal lens for sports, people and school events, this lens provides clear images with less blur.

Getting a little more. My zoom lens came with my kit as a promotion piece. I'm so enthusiastic to have it in my tool kit. I can get that much more out of a shoot when I switch. Thinkg are closer and more in detail and I can really see what it is that I want a picture of when I use the zoom. The clarity and ease of switching the lens on the fly is making me use it as my main lens. The picture quality from this lens and from the Nikon product has made me enjoy photography again in the digital age, and leave the snapshots behind for better art. April 14, 2011
AF-S DX VR Zoom-NIKKOR 55-200mm f/4-5.6G IF-ED This is my first High Power Zoom lens and I'm quite happy to use this lens. It is sharp and have a very useful zoom range. Not that fast as the 70-200 but of course a great value for the price you pay for. April 14, 2011
Great Lens for the Money I owned this 55-200vr lens for about 9 months, for use with my Nikon D60, before my needs "forced" me to get a 70-300vr. It is a very good quality lens for when more zoom power is needed than the standard 18-55vr will deliver, especially for landscapes, sports or the like. I found that the focus was quick and smooth and easy to use, as described in Nikon's written material and that the image quality was very good - nice crisp and clear shots. I definitely appreciated the VR feature especially when out near the 200 range, though most times at max I would use a tripod. The lens is very intuitive and easy to use. As with probably most lenses today the ability to use either auto or manual focus is a plus. Though fairly light weight, I did not detect anything that made it flimsy or seem less than standard Nikon quality. I would recommend this lens to anyone who only has an 18-55 now and wants more zoom for not that much money. April 8, 2011
Sharp! I love this lens! If you have good lighting available and you really can work your camera, then this lens can do wonders! The only down fall is shooting in low light. I would really recommend this lens to wildlife/nature hobbyists. Do note: I shoot with a Nikon d3100 March 20, 2011
Zoom lens After I bought from Walmart dealer shopping centre,I took many photos by new zoom lens 55-200 ,My photos are excellent so I am not disappointed to buy which so much value to have one. March 12, 2011
Sharp! sharp! sharp! With the price of this lens, the image sharpness is awesome! just put on the body with good high ISO (D7000) and flash, you can utilize the lens to its maximum capacity! March 1, 2011
Stunning Just bought this new lens and just love it!!!! Would totally recommend it to anyone. February 27, 2011
Good DX kit lens You can get lots of bangs for you bucks if you can live with the comparatively slow max. aperture. February 27, 2011
Lens is ok, grainy This lens is good for certain purposes, but none which I personally encounter on a regular basis. I find that generally it is grainy and does not handle indoor light well at all. Good for outdoors, nature, and bird shots if you don't crank it up to the full 200mm. February 24, 2011
It's a kit lens When I upgraded to my D7000, I held onto this lens from my D40 kit until I can get something better. The quality is pretty good for the price. At 200mm, the quality does degrade, even when using a tripod. It also has a difficult time focusing when the temperature gets below freezing and the motor gets a bit jerky. I often just switch to manual. February 13, 2011
Excellent lens quality The clarity of this lens is wonderful and I have been able to get some wonderful shots by being a little out of the way. When I download the pictures to my computer software, I am continually amazed at the detail that is captured from a distance! February 12, 2011
JUST PERFECT Purchased this lense to have an extra for my D3100, i was amazed about the outcome of my pictures, much more detailed and outstanding shots. February 10, 2011
love this lense This lense is great for situations when you need a small zoom lense! The VR option is great too. i would highly recomend this. January 22, 2011
Disappointed in Service and Quality I received the 55-200mm lens as a gift from my husband for Christmas 2009. It lasted me till September 2010 when a little piece broke inside affecting my lens' ability to zoom/focus. Since I still had the receipt I decided to see if I could try exchanging it at Best Buy. It got me absolutely nowhere because my husband did not buy the protection plan; never mind I still had the receipt. Goes to show hanging onto your receipt doesn't do much good anymore. When I sent it in to be repaired Nikon wouldn't repair it under warranty because they said it was dropped. I never dropped that lens ever, nor have I ever dropped my camera. It would have cost me $182 to repair a $250 lens. I was very disappointed in Nikon's customer service, so they lost me as a customer. Now I'm a Canon owner. January 18, 2011
nice zoom lens so this is a nice zoom lens that has done some wonders for me like taking some decent shots at a distance. theres not much to say here other than the VR is great and i love this lens for those subjects that are out at a little distance December 30, 2010
right quality for price, but that's it. I am one of those who cannot get a perfect focus at 200mm. All photos are soft or hazy when examined on a pixel level, even when tripod mounted. Most casual photographers will not notice this, but I am very particular. I found it to operate smoothly and was quick enough to focus for all but a few extreme cases on fast moving subjects. The VR has no effect, as far as I can tell. I get the same results with it on or off. I would recommend it for a casual "vacation pictures" photographer, but this is not the lens you want for serious sports or landscape stuff. It's relatively light weight make it decent for carrying around for long days. November 9, 2010
Very happy with new lens. New to DSLR use. First SLR with Zoom. Tried it out taking a shot at the moon without a tripod, 1/125 f5.6 100 ISO, 200mm. I'm amazed. can see small craters and impact debris fields. Tripod shots are better yet. Outstanding optics for the price. October 17, 2010
Nice lens for the money preformed better than expected but upgraded since purchase to a bigger lens. A good lens for good indoor lighting and great for outdoors. October 16, 2010
Best waste of 250 bucks. This lens lacks sharpness and the VR is null. For a person new to photography it can be a good lens. For advanced amateurs and higher, you would be better off investing your money elsewhere like buying a new bag or something more productive. It has a turtle fast focus as well. In this lens' defense, you can't expect much at this price. October 14, 2010
A bit soft, but OK This lens is good for it's money, and I do appreciate the VR system and it is quite compact. I was disappointed at how soft its images were, however. I gave it four stars, however, because it has an excellent price. Apart from that, it's just an ordinary mid-telephoto lens. I recommend this lens to those who are a bit tight financially, for those who have more, I would recommend the AF-S VR 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G IF-ED or the even better (but more expensive) AF-S 70-200mm f/2.8G ED VR II. September 28, 2010
Good Starter Zoom Lense Ordered this lense with a refurbished D5000. When the lense arrived it looked brand new despite the fact it was in a boxed labeled refurbished. Used it at a wedding and it took some very good long range photos. The only drawback is that I had to get used to bring three feet away for any "closeup" pictures. At this point I am just scratching the surface of what this lense can do. This is a good buy for a lense that can do both closeups and pictures that require some zoom capability. September 23, 2010
Another must have lens! This lens outperforms most lenses in this focal range, for a fraction of the cost too! September 21, 2010
Excellent For Mid range photography this lens came with my D60 Pack which i brought together with my mom and the lens is just superb it is able to capture Actions like Soccer and Basketball which i think its great for us new photographers who are still new to the Nikon Dslr Line of Cameras great job nikon Keep up the good work and Produce more High quality Lenses!!!!! August 27, 2010
Good lens This is a good lens. Haven't used it a lot as yet, but when I have used it, I'm very satisfied. It is slightly slow for low light shooting, but overall, an excellent lens. I knew about the speed when I bought it so was not surprised. Good job Nikon. August 13, 2010
great for the price. like the features, except for wildlife photography it needs to be faster. As i have been drawn into the digital world kicking & screaming (since all my other nikon equip. is mechanical); this is a first digital experience for me. However the lense is sharp and I cannot complain about the weight either. I have been a Nikon fan for over 20 years. will nikon design a faster DX lense between this model and the more expensive model? I hope so. August 9, 2010
Worst lens I ever bought OK, so I got what I paid for I suppose. Had I known that the quality and performance of this lens was so poor, under no circumstances other an emergency would I have bought it. The lens simply would not focus. I shot a couple hundred test images, comparing 3 lenses. Every image shot with this lens was not sharp. I exchanged it for another and tested again. The images were sharper. Sharp enough that for the price I decided to keep it. Still not razor sharp but acceptable. After using the lens for a couple months (not everyday use) I noticed a catch in the zoom. I mean a physical catch requiring enough effort to overcome it and continue the zoom that the camera would jump slightly (hand held). Worse yet, it seems the spot along the zoom is not always in the same place. Sometimes it works perfectly other times it's slightly noticable and at others it's just unacceptable. I have a hunch it may also be affected by temperature. It's a light weight lens with marginal optics and obvious inconsistencies in manufacturing quality. August 7, 2010
This product has great features and easy to use Photo quality is excellent for the money. It is a great portrait lens as well as a great telephoto lens for close sports action such as boxing, skating, gymnast, etc. I would recommend this lens to the serious hobbyist as well as the professional. I am an oil paint portrait artist and use the lens to set up my compositions as well as lighting effects. Now days people do not have the time to sit and pose, so I work it all out in the camera first, then through my photo software do any extra tweaking necessary and work from the print. I can then paint when I want to, such as 2 AM. August 5, 2010
Works great Works really well in obtaining great close up pictures. August 3, 2010
Excellent Optics with a great Zoomin This lens is great value for its price. The VR Lens offers excellent stability and blends in with the body. Depth of image is excellent. The Focus and Clarity makes it a steal over lenses from Canon or other makes. A Great asset to have in your kit for Nikon D-SLR's. August 3, 2010
Recommend as a back-up and for light use. I use this lens as a backup for my 70-300mm VR and use it on my second body all the time. Optical performance is excellent. It is light weight and the VR couldn't be better. Not sure how well it would hold up as an every day lens for the professional or advanced amature. August 2, 2010

Nikkor 55-200mm VR or 55-300mm VR for Nikon D60?

Hello,
Wondering which Nikkor lens would be best for kids sport activities (55-200mm or 55-300mm)?
I own Nikon D60 with 18-55mm VR, SB-400 and just placed an order for Nikkor 35mm F1.8 lens, now just need to get the right zoom.
Any idea on which Nikkor lens would focus faster or are they the both the same (55-200mm or 55-300mm)?
55-200mm has a perfect price but 55-300mm seems to be better quality built.
I am on a budget so please do not suggest a 70-200mm F2.8 VR for sports pictures, I love it but can't afford it.

Thank you for any feedback,

Vadim

If you’re looking for more Zoom it will be best if you go for the AF-S 55-300mm lens. Both lenses have the same F/stop 4-5.6.
