nice zoom lens so this is a nice zoom lens that has done some wonders for me like taking some decent shots at a distance. theres not much to say here other than the VR is great and i love this lens for those subjects that are out at a little distance December 30, 2010
right quality for price, but that's it. I am one of those who cannot get a perfect focus at 200mm. All photos are soft or hazy when examined on a pixel level, even when tripod mounted. Most casual photographers will not notice this, but I am very particular. I found it to operate smoothly and was quick enough to focus for all but a few extreme cases on fast moving subjects. The VR has no effect, as far as I can tell. I get the same results with it on or off. I would recommend it for a casual "vacation pictures" photographer, but this is not the lens you want for serious sports or landscape stuff. It's relatively light weight make it decent for carrying around for long days. November 9, 2010
Very happy with new lens. New to DSLR use. First SLR with Zoom. Tried it out taking a shot at the moon without a tripod, 1/125 f5.6 100 ISO, 200mm. I'm amazed. can see small craters and impact debris fields. Tripod shots are better yet. Outstanding optics for the price. October 17, 2010
Nice lens for the money preformed better than expected but upgraded since purchase to a bigger lens. A good lens for good indoor lighting and great for outdoors. October 16, 2010
Best waste of 250 bucks. This lens lacks sharpness and the VR is null. For a person new to photography it can be a good lens. For advanced amateurs and higher, you would be better off investing your money elsewhere like buying a new bag or something more productive. It has a turtle fast focus as well. In this lens' defense, you can't expect much at this price. October 14, 2010
A bit soft, but OK This lens is good for it's money, and I do appreciate the VR system and it is quite compact. I was disappointed at how soft its images were, however. I gave it four stars, however, because it has an excellent price. Apart from that, it's just an ordinary mid-telephoto lens. I recommend this lens to those who are a bit tight financially, for those who have more, I would recommend the AF-S VR 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G IF-ED or the even better (but more expensive) AF-S 70-200mm f/2.8G ED VR II. September 28, 2010
Good Starter Zoom Lense Ordered this lense with a refurbished D5000. When the lense arrived it looked brand new despite the fact it was in a boxed labeled refurbished. Used it at a wedding and it took some very good long range photos. The only drawback is that I had to get used to bring three feet away for any "closeup" pictures. At this point I am just scratching the surface of what this lense can do. This is a good buy for a lense that can do both closeups and pictures that require some zoom capability. September 23, 2010
Another must have lens! This lens outperforms most lenses in this focal range, for a fraction of the cost too! September 21, 2010
Excellent For Mid range photography this lens came with my D60 Pack which i brought together with my mom and the lens is just superb it is able to capture Actions like Soccer and Basketball which i think its great for us new photographers who are still new to the Nikon Dslr Line of Cameras great job nikon Keep up the good work and Produce more High quality Lenses!!!!! August 27, 2010
Good lens This is a good lens. Haven't used it a lot as yet, but when I have used it, I'm very satisfied. It is slightly slow for low light shooting, but overall, an excellent lens. I knew about the speed when I bought it so was not surprised. Good job Nikon. August 13, 2010
great for the price. like the features, except for wildlife photography it needs to be faster. As i have been drawn into the digital world kicking & screaming (since all my other nikon equip. is mechanical); this is a first digital experience for me. However the lense is sharp and I cannot complain about the weight either. I have been a Nikon fan for over 20 years. will nikon design a faster DX lense between this model and the more expensive model? I hope so. August 9, 2010
Worst lens I ever bought OK, so I got what I paid for I suppose. Had I known that the quality and performance of this lens was so poor, under no circumstances other an emergency would I have bought it. The lens simply would not focus. I shot a couple hundred test images, comparing 3 lenses. Every image shot with this lens was not sharp. I exchanged it for another and tested again. The images were sharper. Sharp enough that for the price I decided to keep it. Still not razor sharp but acceptable. After using the lens for a couple months (not everyday use) I noticed a catch in the zoom. I mean a physical catch requiring enough effort to overcome it and continue the zoom that the camera would jump slightly (hand held). Worse yet, it seems the spot along the zoom is not always in the same place. Sometimes it works perfectly other times it's slightly noticable and at others it's just unacceptable. I have a hunch it may also be affected by temperature. It's a light weight lens with marginal optics and obvious inconsistencies in manufacturing quality. August 7, 2010
This product has great features and easy to use Photo quality is excellent for the money. It is a great portrait lens as well as a great telephoto lens for close sports action such as boxing, skating, gymnast, etc. I would recommend this lens to the serious hobbyist as well as the professional. I am an oil paint portrait artist and use the lens to set up my compositions as well as lighting effects. Now days people do not have the time to sit and pose, so I work it all out in the camera first, then through my photo software do any extra tweaking necessary and work from the print. I can then paint when I want to, such as 2 AM. August 5, 2010
Works great Works really well in obtaining great close up pictures. August 3, 2010
Excellent Optics with a great Zoomin This lens is great value for its price. The VR Lens offers excellent stability and blends in with the body. Depth of image is excellent. The Focus and Clarity makes it a steal over lenses from Canon or other makes. A Great asset to have in your kit for Nikon D-SLR's. August 3, 2010
Recommend as a back-up and for light use. I use this lens as a backup for my 70-300mm VR and use it on my second body all the time. Optical performance is excellent. It is light weight and the VR couldn't be better. Not sure how well it would hold up as an every day lens for the professional or advanced amature. August 2, 2010
Excellent Zoom Lens! This is a great lens that could cover most of your requirements. I got this with my D5000 and I always keep this lens attached to my camera. Except for wide angle shots this lens gives you a good versatile usage when it comes to mid range zooms to portraits to close ups. Very clear, good speed and great quality. I love it! August 2, 2010
lens went in and out a few times and then lost its ability to focus sending it in for repair was not cost effective was so bad i sold the camera also worried id lose my money on that also took a few nice pictures but only by force not to friendly example auto was auto 1/2 the time go for higher end models maybe after testing first August 1, 2010
Great lens, light weight and compact. Works great on my D3000 camera. July 31, 2010
Great Telephoto Lens I got this lens with my Nikon D60 as a part of a bundle. I use it occasionally, usually for documenting sporting events. It is a very good lens and I have no complaints. July 31, 2010
Excellent lens for all around use Added this lens to my D40 and found it to be very useful in photographing flowers. While not a macro lens it does allow for close ups of larger blossums with a nice bokeh. I have added close up filters to increase its capability with some excellent results. It has also worked well when used for large bird and animal wildlife photos. Overall a good lens to add to Nikon camera kits. I have recommended this lens to friends who have bought it and loved the VR feature. July 31, 2010
Easy to use This a versatile lens with easy to use features that make taking quality photos a snap. July 31, 2010
Great lens with ease of use Excellent lens for grand kids sports, and out doors use. I take it to deer stand every time I go out. Love to shout scenary from stand. July 31, 2010
Good Lens This lens is a very good one for long shots on distant objects. I shot Niagara falls and mountain scapes using this lens and the shots were great. July 31, 2010
Fantastic value! This lens is a bargain! Good sharpness and convenience! But the Vibration Reduction is to die for!!!! Not quite the build quality of the upper end Nikon zooms but the VR makes this zoom lens unbeatable for those of us pixel catchers on a budget! If you're on a budget or just getting started get this lens! You'll be happy with the results! July 31, 2010
Amazed at what I have captured I have been able to capture some amazing nature pictures I thought only a professional would be able to get. The color, detail and clarity is fantastic. The camera is very easy to use for an amateur like me. I try to take outback everytime since I never know what will show up! July 31, 2010
Very good for the price I think that this lens was very good for the price. I bought this with my Nikon D5000, my first D-SLR Camera. I love it for photographing flowers and sports. Its autofocus is a nice feature as well as the vibration reduction. Overall, a solid lens. July 30, 2010
good reach, light weight, very good performence Nice light weight lens that lets you get close. Fast AF, effective VR, no zoom creep, It has wetted my appetite for a longer lens, but wouldn't give it up. It is compact enough to belong in a small photo "grab" bag so I can always have it with me. July 30, 2010
great medium distance telphoto usefull for reasonably close to the action sports and kids events - not the best for long shot nature photography or far off field sports - but - that is not what it is meant to do I am not a fan of most long telephoto lenses, preferring to get closer to my subject or compose more in the frame, however this is a very fine, accurate, color correct medium field tele-photo lens that can;t be beat at the price and nikon quality July 30, 2010
This Bargain is a Beauty! I LOVE it !! The color rendition, clarity, & sharpness of this lens are beautiful. It doesn't take an expensive camera to realize exceptional results. I use this lens on my D60 and my D90. It gets most of its use doing studio-type portraiture on my D60, simply because the results are so gorgeous. If you're shooting flowers, you're in luck with this lens -- beautiful. It's an awesome lens for the money in the 55-200mm range, and I doubt that you'll find anything that yields better results visible to the eye when shooting with a DX camera. I own about 10 lenses, and this one holds its own as my preference for portraiture, because when mounted on the D60, it's a very small, light package to work with, yet the results are splendid. It won't gather dust while I shoot with the mega-buck glass. It just plain works -- wonderfully well. July 30, 2010

Nikkor 55-200mm VR or 55-300mm VR for Nikon D60?

Hello,
Wondering which Nikkor lens would be best for kids sport activities (55-200mm or 55-300mm)?
I own Nikon D60 with 18-55mm VR, SB-400 and just placed an order for Nikkor 35mm F1.8 lens, now just need to get the right zoom.
Any idea on which Nikkor lens would focus faster or are they the both the same (55-200mm or 55-300mm)?
55-200mm has a perfect price but 55-300mm seems to be better quality built.
I am on a budget so please do not suggest a 70-200mm F2.8 VR for sports pictures, I love it but can't afford it.

Thank you for any feedback,

Vadim

If you’re looking for more Zoom it will be best if you go for the AF-S 55-300mm lens. Both lenses have the same F/stop 4-5.6.

Award Winner

American Photo Editor’s Choice 2007 Award

The editors of American Photo and Popular Photography recently presented the Nikon AF-S DX VR Zoom-NIKKOR 55-200mm f/4-5.6G IF-ED lens with an American Photo Editor's Choice 2007 Award. Editor Russell Hart named the lens one the ten best digital SLR lenses of the year. Of the ten lenses featured, the versatile Nikon 55-200mm lens was named the "best buy." Hart was amazed with the excellent picture quality produced by the lens and the strong vibration reduction feature. He called the Nikon 55-200mm lens, a lens that gives a lot, yet is still very affordable.
