Convenient telephoto coverage with Vibration Reduction (VR)

The Nikon AF-S DX VR Zoom-NIKKOR 55-200mm f/4-5.6G IF-ED is an ideal telephoto zoom lens for those seeking a lightweight all-in-one lens or a companion lens for the 18-55mm kit lens that came with their camera. Vibration Reduction (VR) significantly reduces camera shake throughout the entire focal length, making sharp telephoto shots substantially easier to achieve. An ideal lens for sports, people and school events, this lens provides clear images with less blur.

A-M
A-M

New lens! Just got my DX VR 55-200 today and will be trying it out on the rodeo today. If its anything like the other lens I have then I should enjoy it also. I hope to get my new tripod (motorized mechanical) very soon because I tend to shake some on the longer timed shots. Oh did I mention I love my Nikon............. June 23, 2011
Excellent!!! This lens is amazing. I used it for about an hour straight yesterday. The VR was on constantly and it didn't drain my battery at all. This lens is perfect for sports, landscape and portrait photography. It captured the lighting perfectly and all of my photos came out sharp (which is amazing since I was shooting a soccer game!!) I would definitely recommend this lens, especially to entry level photographers, who wish to get sharp long-distance or movement shots without any extra hassle with camera settings. June 20, 2011
This lens is absolutely amazing. Taking pictures from a distance is perfect with this lens. The images are so clear and precise. I don;t know what I would do without this lens. June 17, 2011
Looks can be deceiving I purchased this lens with a D40 around 3-4 years ago. I purchased this set up because of the positive reviews it had received as being a good value and a quality product. It was a replacement to a point and shoot digital camera with a long lag time. The 55-200mm lens has never been up to snuff in my opinion, say with low light focus, or the speed of focus. By the time the lens had focused my child’s sports moment had passed. Now the lens will not focus at all in auto mode, and it appears that is because the lens’s aperture is broken. I would not buy this lens again June 8, 2011
Very good zoom lens I tried this lens to shoot children in the park. They were running. But I still got pretty good picture for them. Very sharp. For this price and weight of the lens, I am very satisfied. June 6, 2011
Amazing Lens! Well, I have once again been pleasantly surprised by what Nikon can achieve at the price points they target. I got this lens as a $100 add on to my D5100 and jeez is it sharp! What a great telephoto lens for the far away shots! Even at the full retail price it is a steal. I love it June 4, 2011
POOR QUALITY Fragile, poor quality materials, plastic substituted for steel. May 30, 2011
Very disappointing lens Very disappointed with my AF-S DX NIKKOR ED 55-200mm f/4-5.6G lens. At 11 months (purchased 2009) the autofocus stopped working. Prior to that autofocus failed frequently in low light. Resolution was fine. May 18, 2011
Great product ,high quality excellent value. ease of cleaning and installing on camera body! May 16, 2011
Beautiful pics I just purchased the lense and have been using it to shoot pics of wildlife. The pictures thusfar have been spectacular. I haven't not yet had a chance to put the VR option through its paces. April 27, 2011
Great easy to use lens. Good all around lens, easy to use. Great blurr free pictures. April 25, 2011
This is a great lens! I just recently bought a D3100 and bought this lens at the same time I bought the camera with its 18-55 lens. I have never spent money more wisely. We have dogs and cats and photographing them is a passion of mine. With the 55-200 you don't have to be close to get great closeups but you can get closer if you need to. I know telephoto lenses are supposed to be better than zooms but I can't see how many lenses could beat this one. I love it. April 25, 2011
Nice VR for steady shot I love this lens because of the zoom power it has and very light weight also. April 23, 2011
A good all around usage lens great for landscapes I always liked the wide angle lenses I can get a crowd in my shots and I can get great landscapes plus it is a fairly good telophoto end on this lens too! April 21, 2011
Love it. This lens has the VR setting which is why I bought it - being an elderly person, I'm not as steady as I was and this (VR) helps my photos to come out perfectly, no blurry photos. April 20, 2011
Great lens for close up work Using this lens on the D3100 it is surprisingly much more enjoyable to use as compared with the standard 18 to 55mm lens the body comes with. It is a great lens for closeups of just about anything, like flowers for example, as you don't need to get physically close. A word on sharpness though. The VR really works but if you need a hyper detailed picture, say one showing every bit of pollen on a flower, then do it the old fashion way and disable the VR and either use a tripod or hold it rock steady. The difference is subtle but it IS there. Physically the lens is a bit larger than the stocker, but sits easy in the palm of your hand. Well worth the money. April 19, 2011
Its my go to Lens Excellent Lens for a wide variety of uses. VR helps when you dont have a tripod or are shooting on the fly. Its my go to lens atm April 15, 2011
Nikkor 55-200mm IF-ED VR Lens I have to admit that as a prime lens bigot, this lens performs much better than would be expected. The VR does what is claimed, but don't push, stick with good technique and stable a shooting position The lens gives good results on portraits, decent is Bokeh. Works very well for animal portraits, you have enough lens to keep a good working distance and still get tight framing. For the bottom line, get one! It may not be the fastest focusing lens,it's faster than the earlier mechanical focus units. For most situations the 18-55mm and the 55-200mm are the first choice. They give flexibility, light weight and compact size. A few more f stops would be great, though the VR makes that a minor point. Now, how do I explain the fortune in prime lenses that sit neglected? April 15, 2011
Good lens for entry level price Found the lens to be relatively acceptable for a low priced entry level small telephoto zoom. Autofocus went on the lens after about 18 months, had it repaired with no motor within two weeks through Nikon service. No problems since. Lens barrel seems to be getting a bit wobbly but is not affecting any picture taking. April 15, 2011
Good, but not great This lens is good for the price. It is sharp in good light and mid range zooms. Don't expect to see results like you do in photo magazine pictures and then you won't be disappointed. Autofocus needs some help if you go to high zooms from moderate settings. You will likely have to move the focus ring to infinity then let the autofocus take over. So, don't use it if you want to be making fast changes in zoom settings. It does pay off for versatility and as a one lens to carry. April 15, 2011
Lens is bad This lens has not worked right for a long time it will not focus properly. April 15, 2011
Excellent for the Price Excellent "Zoom VR Lens"....does everything you need and more. I go shooting new pictuyres every weekend, having a ball...."Sightseeing". April 14, 2011
Great lens This is the lens I do almost all my nature photography with. It is sharp and gives me beautiful pictures. April 14, 2011
Plastic mount breaks easily, no parts available Have had this lens for less than a year and it's seen minimal use, only during two vacations. The plastic mounting broke which prevents the lens from mounting to the camera body. Internet if full of stories about how easily this breaks....basically it's cheap. Called Nikon support and told part is out of stock and to call back in a few weeks. Wasn't allowed to order it and have it ship when in stock but forced to call back. Terrible product and service from what is supposed to be a premium company and product. Very disappointed in Nikon regarding this. April 14, 2011
Terrific lens for the price VR rocks! Where else can you get such a great performer with VR for such an awesome price. I am very pleased with this purchase. April 14, 2011
Great for the price For what it is designed to do, it works great. It is a great second lens. Certainly well worth the money, and well worth taking along when you go shooting. I can't imagine getting this lens in the non-VR edition. As it is, I had to get a monopod for long range shooting even with the VR. April 14, 2011
Good Value for the price Bought my lens on a cruise and put it to work. I find it a good compliment to my 18-125 AF DX lens (discontinued). Between the both of them I get good coverage of city and landscapes. April 14, 2011
Good overall choice for traveling Great lens for traveling. Light, small for what it does, VR is quite good. Lens does not pop into focus in your viewfinder like the best Nikon has to offer. April 14, 2011
I've had this lens for a little while now and I've used it on occasion. I like the easy way it allows for additional zooming capability without blur or too much fussing around with my camera. April 14, 2011
Very good product. Very good product I'm very impress and enjoying this product. We went on France and Italy with it and we have a lot of memories... Thanks Nikon April 14, 2011

Nikkor 55-200mm VR or 55-300mm VR for Nikon D60?

Hello,
Wondering which Nikkor lens would be best for kids sport activities (55-200mm or 55-300mm)?
I own Nikon D60 with 18-55mm VR, SB-400 and just placed an order for Nikkor 35mm F1.8 lens, now just need to get the right zoom.
Any idea on which Nikkor lens would focus faster or are they the both the same (55-200mm or 55-300mm)?
55-200mm has a perfect price but 55-300mm seems to be better quality built.
I am on a budget so please do not suggest a 70-200mm F2.8 VR for sports pictures, I love it but can't afford it.

Thank you for any feedback,

Vadim

If you’re looking for more Zoom it will be best if you go for the AF-S 55-300mm lens. Both lenses have the same F/stop 4-5.6.
