Love it.
This lens has the VR setting which is why I bought it - being an elderly person, I'm not as steady as I was and this (VR) helps my photos to come out perfectly, no blurry photos.

Great lens for close up work
Using this lens on the D3100 it is surprisingly much more enjoyable to use as compared with the standard 18 to 55mm lens the body comes with. It is a great lens for closeups of just about anything, like flowers for example, as you don't need to get physically close. A word on sharpness though. The VR really works but if you need a hyper detailed picture, say one showing every bit of pollen on a flower, then do it the old fashion way and disable the VR and either use a tripod or hold it rock steady. The difference is subtle but it IS there. Physically the lens is a bit larger than the stocker, but sits easy in the palm of your hand. Well worth the money.

Its my go to Lens
Excellent Lens for a wide variety of uses.
VR helps when you dont have a tripod or are shooting on the fly.
Its my go to lens atm

Nikkor 55-200mm IF-ED VR Lens
I have to admit that as a prime lens bigot, this lens performs much better than would be expected. The VR does what is claimed, but don't push, stick with good technique and stable a shooting position The lens gives good results on portraits, decent is Bokeh. Works very well for animal portraits, you have enough lens to keep a good working distance and still get tight framing. For the bottom line, get one! It may not be the fastest focusing lens,it's faster than the earlier mechanical focus units.
For most situations the 18-55mm and the 55-200mm are the first choice. They give flexibility, light weight and compact size. A few more f stops would be great, though the VR makes that a minor point. Now, how do I explain the fortune in prime lenses that sit neglected?

Good lens for entry level price
Found the lens to be relatively acceptable for a low priced entry level small telephoto zoom. Autofocus went on the lens after about 18 months, had it repaired with no motor within two weeks through Nikon service. No problems since.
Lens barrel seems to be getting a bit wobbly but is not affecting any picture taking.

Good, but not great
This lens is good for the price. It is sharp in good light and mid range zooms. Don't expect to see results like you do in photo magazine pictures and then you won't be disappointed. Autofocus needs some help if you go to high zooms from moderate settings. You will likely have to move the focus ring to infinity then let the autofocus take over. So, don't use it if you want to be making fast changes in zoom settings. It does pay off for versatility and as a one lens to carry.

Plastic mount breaks easily, no parts available
Have had this lens for less than a year and it's seen minimal use, only during two vacations. The plastic mounting broke which prevents the lens from mounting to the camera body. Internet if full of stories about how easily this breaks....basically it's cheap. Called Nikon support and told part is out of stock and to call back in a few weeks. Wasn't allowed to order it and have it ship when in stock but forced to call back. Terrible product and service from what is supposed to be a premium company and product.
Very disappointed in Nikon regarding this.

Terrific lens for the price VR rocks!
Where else can you get such a great performer with VR for such an awesome price.
I am very pleased with this purchase.

Great for the price
For what it is designed to do, it works great. It is a great second lens. Certainly well worth the money, and well worth taking along when you go shooting.
I can't imagine getting this lens in the non-VR edition. As it is, I had to get a monopod for long range shooting even with the VR.

Good Value for the price
Bought my lens on a cruise and put it to work. I find it a good compliment to my 18-125 AF DX lens (discontinued). Between the both of them I get good coverage of city and landscapes.

Good overall choice for traveling
Great lens for traveling. Light, small for what it does, VR is quite good. Lens does not pop into focus in your viewfinder like the best Nikon has to offer.

I've had this lens for a little while now and I've used it on occasion. I like the easy way it allows for additional zooming capability without blur or too much fussing around with my camera.

Getting a little more.
My zoom lens came with my kit as a promotion piece. I'm so enthusiastic to have it in my tool kit. I can get that much more out of a shoot when I switch. Thinkg are closer and more in detail and I can really see what it is that I want a picture of when I use the zoom. The clarity and ease of switching the lens on the fly is making me use it as my main lens. The picture quality from this lens and from the Nikon product has made me enjoy photography again in the digital age, and leave the snapshots behind for better art.

AF-S DX VR Zoom-NIKKOR 55-200mm f/4-5.6G IF-ED
This is my first High Power Zoom lens and I'm quite happy to use this lens. It is sharp and have a very useful zoom range. Not that fast as the 70-200 but of course a great value for the price you pay for.

Great Lens for the Money
I owned this 55-200vr lens for about 9 months, for use with my Nikon D60, before my needs "forced" me to get a 70-300vr. It is a very good quality lens for when more zoom power is needed than the standard 18-55vr will deliver, especially for landscapes, sports or the like. I found that the focus was quick and smooth and easy to use, as described in Nikon's written material and that the image quality was very good - nice crisp and clear shots. I definitely appreciated the VR feature especially when out near the 200 range, though most times at max I would use a tripod. The lens is very intuitive and easy to use. As with probably most lenses today the ability to use either auto or manual focus is a plus. Though fairly light weight, I did not detect anything that made it flimsy or seem less than standard Nikon quality. I would recommend this lens to anyone who only has an 18-55 now and wants more zoom for not that much money.

Sharp!
I love this lens! If you have good lighting available and you really can work your camera, then this lens can do wonders! The only down fall is shooting in low light. I would really recommend this lens to wildlife/nature hobbyists.
Do note:
I shoot with a Nikon d3100

With the price of this lens, the image sharpness is awesome! just put on the body with good high ISO (D7000) and flash, you can utilize the lens to its maximum capacity!

Good DX kit lens
You can get lots of bangs for you bucks if you can live with the comparatively slow max. aperture.

Lens is ok, grainy
This lens is good for certain purposes, but none which I personally encounter on a regular basis. I find that generally it is grainy and does not handle indoor light well at all. Good for outdoors, nature, and bird shots if you don't crank it up to the full 200mm.

It's a kit lens
When I upgraded to my D7000, I held onto this lens from my D40 kit until I can get something better. The quality is pretty good for the price. At 200mm, the quality does degrade, even when using a tripod. It also has a difficult time focusing when the temperature gets below freezing and the motor gets a bit jerky. I often just switch to manual.

Excellent lens quality
The clarity of this lens is wonderful and I have been able to get some wonderful shots by being a little out of the way. When I download the pictures to my computer software, I am continually amazed at the detail that is captured from a distance!

JUST PERFECT
Purchased this lense to have an extra for my D3100, i was amazed about the outcome of my pictures, much more detailed and outstanding shots.

Disappointed in Service and Quality
I received the 55-200mm lens as a gift from my husband for Christmas 2009. It lasted me till September 2010 when a little piece broke inside affecting my lens' ability to zoom/focus. Since I still had the receipt I decided to see if I could try exchanging it at Best Buy. It got me absolutely nowhere because my husband did not buy the protection plan; never mind I still had the receipt. Goes to show hanging onto your receipt doesn't do much good anymore. When I sent it in to be repaired Nikon wouldn't repair it under warranty because they said it was dropped. I never dropped that lens ever, nor have I ever dropped my camera. It would have cost me $182 to repair a $250 lens. I was very disappointed in Nikon's customer service, so they lost me as a customer. Now I'm a Canon owner.
