Unrivaled performance

A lens in a class of its own

The fast, ultra-wide-angle AF-S Zoom-NIKKOR 14–24mm f/2.8G ED is optimized for edge-to-edge sharpness on both FX- and DX-format Nikon D-SLR cameras. It combines the latest Nikon lens technologies, innovations in optical design and the rich heritage of NIKKOR glass to deliver truly superlative performance in any situation.

Engineered for pros

Advanced, durable and reliable

The AF-S Zoom NIKKOR 14–24mm f/2.8G ED’s rugged construction and professional-grade dust and moisture resistance withstand even the most trying conditions. Nikon’s exclusive Silent Wave Motor (SWM) and Internal Focusing (IF) technologies enable ultra high-speed autofocusing with exceptional accuracy and powerful, super-quiet operation. Nano Crystal Coat (N) minimizes ghosting and flare, and Aspherical Lens Elements (AS) virtually eliminates coma and other types of aberration—even when used at the largest apertures. The AF-S Zoom NIKKOR 14–24mm f/2.8G ED draws the highest level of performance from advanced D-SLR cameras.
Silent Wave Motor
Silent Wave Motor
AF-S NIKKOR lenses feature Nikon’s Silent Wave Motor (SWM), which represents a significant advance in AF lens technology. SWM uses ultrasonic vibrations—rather than a gear system—to focus the lens, providing incredibly smooth, silent and precise autofocus operation.
Nano Crystal Coat
Nano Crystal Coat
An anti-reflective coating developed by Nikon that virtually eliminates internal lens element reflections across a wide range of wavelengths. Nano Crystal Coat solves ghost effects caused by red light and effectively reduces ghost and flare caused by light entering the lens diagonally.
ED (Extra-Low Dispersion) Glass
ED (Extra-Low Dispersion) Glass
An optical glass developed by Nikon that is used with normal optical glass in telephoto lenses to obtain optimum correction of chromatic aberrations.
AS
AS
AS stands for Aspherical lens elements. This type of lens utilizes non-spherical surfaces on either one or both sides of the glass in order to eliminate certain types of lens aberration.
M/A
M/A
Select NIKKOR lenses have a focusing mode which allows switching from automatic to manual focusing with virtually no lag time by simply turning the focusing ring on the lens. This makes it possible to seamlessly switch to fine manual focusing while looking through the viewfinder.
IF Lens
IF Lens
A NIKKOR lens in which only the internal lens group shifts during focusing. Thus, IF NIKKORS do not change in size during AF operation, allowing for compact, lightweight lenses capable of closer focusing distances. These lenses will be designated with the abbreviation IF on the lens barrel.

Nailed the shot! All round great walking around lens, shooting D800 i decided to treat myself to a new lens. I do enjoy using this lens but when i shoot raw it seems lacking depth of field. also literally 1 moth after i purchased it for $2500 it now sells for $1999, im rather disappointed and thus 4 stars. Attached is an unedited photo taken in Hawaii while in a deep sea fishing trip. Shot with D800, 14-24 lens, iso 400, raw with -2. July 19, 2015
Disappointing.. updated. I was full of high expectations for this lens, having read many excellent reviews. The depth of focus (depth of field) is huge, and almost everything appears in focus. However, even with RAW and a low ISO on a D800, the detailed definition is missing. By that I mean it pixilates quite quickly as I zoom into the image on my computer. So what you shoot is what you can expect to get, little more. For my purposes, I get more useable results with the AF-S NIKKOR 16-35mm f/4G ED VR, which is a more modern lens. Whilst losing some extreme wide angle capability, the definition is better for my purposes. The 16-35 also accepts filters, has VR, and is significantly lighter. My professional work involves taking photographs of buildings, and ever in the pursuit of the perfect lens (for my purposes) my next acquisition is the PC-E NIKKOR 24mm f/3.5D ED. June 12, 2015
Disapponting Full of high expectations from great reviews I was disappointed. I get better results with my Nikon 18-35. The focal length is so broad with the 14-24, I don't get the fine detail that I get with my 18-35. Of course this Nikon 14-24 is an old tech lens compared to the Nikon 18-35. The 18-35 has the ability to add filters, and seems to me to be Nikons upgrade to the 14-24. June 2, 2015
Thank You Nikon Great product!... Amazing sharpness around the corners, distortion is very low and easily correctable. Excellent lens!... January 1, 2015
Great special purpose lens Sharp, fast, also tells other nikon users to look at me!!!! haha. Great lens, especially for compact places where you don't get to maneuver, and for seances. It does get a bit heavy with my D4. November 24, 2014

Answer:
You cannot put a filter on the lens. You will have to get a third party filter kit but they are not for protection.

To photograph the stars in the sky as pinpoints of light, start with as wide an f/stop as your lens allows, and shutter speed of about 20 seconds. Any more time than that and the stars will begin to blur. Increase the ISO as needed for a good exposure. A good starting exposure for most star shots is to use the widest aperture on your lens, expose for 20 seconds, increasing the ISO as needed for a good exposure. For more tips on shooting Night photography and sample images of photographers using the AF-S NIKKOR 14–24mm f/2.8G ED please see: http://www.nikonusa.com/en/Learn-An...
