AF-S VR Zoom-Nikkor 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G IF-ED 4.5 5 194 194
Lens over all does good taking sports pictures I use this lens with a D90 body taking baseball pictures. Over all it does a good job,but I am disapointed with the auto focus. At times the auto focus constantly hunts and never locks in. I have other Nikon Lenses that work great and never experience this problem. July 30, 2010
Expensive for what it is With a 16mp sensor, the lens is good to 135mm, and then the image quality starts to decline . At 300mm I find it useless for my purposes when using the D7000. With a 12mp sensor the lens is good enough for most occasions. The AF is very fast though. Not instantaneous, like the 70-200 VR II, but very fast. June 14, 2012
Good lens when it works The optical quality of the lens is very good. But I had already repaired this lens three times because of autofocus problem. It was sent by repair facility to Nikon for repair, but it did not change a bit. Autofocus still does not work properly. I have this product for about 4 years and after three years the lens was in repair three times already. I would not recommend this product to a friend. It does not look like designed and made by Nikon. April 15, 2011
poor sharpness This lens is good to handle, but it has a poor sharpness. After a short period I sent it to service, but there were no Failure. To expensive at that quality... July 31, 2010
Sub-par lens I am very disappointed with this lens. I bought it for bird photography and I find that 1) the quality of the photos is so so, 2) the lens itself plus the camera are so heavy that I frequently end up with shoulder pain after a day of shooting 3) very difficult to take good photos in less than full sunshine as it is difficult to hold the lens firmly. Definitely would need a monopod and even then, the photos would not be so high quality as the lens itself is not great. July 30, 2010
not one of my favorites This is not one of my favorite lenses to say the least, out of all my lenses this is my least favorite, the images I get from this lens are poor unless I'm very close to what I'm photographing, I know this is not a real expensive but at well over $500 when I bought it I expected better, I've almost never gotten good results with this lens especially if what your photographing is more then 50 to 60 feet away from you or if it's something small like a bird that's fairly close, do yourself a favor and leave this one in the store. I've even sent this in for repair thinking there was a problem with it and it was returned saying it was fine. SAVE YOUR MONEY don't buy this lens April 17, 2011
Great lens when it works - Bad quality control? This lens gave fantastic results --- as long as the ambient temperature was over 65 degrees. Below that the camera reported no lens attached and wouldn't take a picture or worse - took pictures that were completely black. Jiggling the lens helped, but I returned it to the store because it was brand new. April 14, 2011
very poor image quality I've had this lense for almost a year and use it with my D90 or should say have used it now it mostly sits in my bag, the image quality with this lens is terrible unless your at the minimum focus distance even at around 35 feet or less the image quality is awful it's always noisy or out of focus even when using a tripod, I sent this lense back to Nikon in Ontario Canada and it was shipped back as in good working order so I guess Nikon messed up on this one unlike my other nikon lenses which are all excelent. July 31, 2010
To Soft I purchased this lense to do basic phtoographic work such as sporting events and wildlife shooting. The lense is very soft across the board. I have contacted Nikon on three occasions and they indicated that there was nothing that could be done to sharpen the image. The VR system works well and I use it often. My only complaint is the soft focus. I do not need a fast lense for what I shoot, but I do need my images to be crisp and in focus. I shoot in bright sunlight and some shade areas in the woods but a standard lense should work fine in these settings. If you are looking for a crisp image this is not the lense for you. This has been the first Nikon Lense that I have been disappointed with. I use it on my D300, D90 and D60 and have the same results. On the plus side, it focuses fast, very quite and smooth. Answer:
The best lenses are the ones you can afford and the ones that suit your needs. No point in buying a 600mm if you want to do portraits, likewise no point in buying a macro if you want to do landscape. It would if you pointed out what you want to do and what your budget is.
