Handheld telephoto shooting

Nikon’s VR II image stabilization

The AF-S VR Zoom-NIKKOR 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G IF-ED brings telephoto reach to hand-held shooting opportunities. Compact and lightweight, it’s a well-balanced walk-around lens for stills and HD videos. Nikon VR (Vibration Reduction) image stabilization provides 2.5 stops* of blur free handheld shooting, assuring dramatically sharper still images and HD video capture. You can even focus as close as 4.9-ft throughout the entire zoom range for fantastic close-up shots.

Exceptional image quality

Built on a legacy of NIKKOR excellence

Whether you shoot an FX- or DX-format camera, the AF-S VR Zoom-NIKKOR 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G IF-ED captures exceptional photos and HD videos with edge-to-edge sharpness. Its specialized Extra-low Dispersion (ED) glass produces clear, high-contrast images with minimal chromatic aberration. Nikon’s exclusive Silent Wave Motor (SWM) provides ultra-quiet, ultra-fast autofocusing with seamless manual focus override; and Internal Focus (IF) lets that focusing occur without the lens changing size, so you can maintain camera-subject working distance throughout the focus range.
*Based on CIPA Standard. This value is achieved when: FX-format compatible lenses are attached to an FX-format digital SLR camera and zoom lenses are set at the maximum telephoto position.
Vibration Reduction
Vibration Reduction
A Nikon in-lens technology that improves image stability by automatically compensating for camera shake. Lenses that offer VR will feature the abbreviation VR on the lens barrel.
Silent Wave Motor
Silent Wave Motor
AF-S NIKKOR lenses feature Nikon’s Silent Wave Motor (SWM), which represents a significant advance in AF lens technology. SWM uses ultrasonic vibrations—rather than a gear system—to focus the lens, providing incredibly smooth, silent and precise autofocus operation.
ED (Extra-Low Dispersion) Glass
ED (Extra-Low Dispersion) Glass
An optical glass developed by Nikon that is used with normal optical glass in telephoto lenses to obtain optimum correction of chromatic aberrations.
M/A
M/A
Select NIKKOR lenses have a focusing mode which allows switching from automatic to manual focusing with virtually no lag time by simply turning the focusing ring on the lens. This makes it possible to seamlessly switch to fine manual focusing while looking through the viewfinder.
IF Lens
IF Lens
A NIKKOR lens in which only the internal lens group shifts during focusing. Thus, IF NIKKORS do not change in size during AF operation, allowing for compact, lightweight lenses capable of closer focusing distances. These lenses will be designated with the abbreviation IF on the lens barrel.

Great product. I have found this a great lens for soccer and baseball high school games. Stops the action for clear pictures. High speed let you catch the action in a series. I really enjoy using it. April 20, 2011
Great lens I bought this lens approximately three years ago to replace my Nikon 75-300 AF. I believe this is the best consumer zoom lens on the market. color and contrast are great and VR allows me to get great pictures without tripod, although in certain situations a tripod is necessary with any lens. I use this lens for wildlife and some portraits. April 19, 2011
Be bold! The "VR" function let one be bolder, nailing shots that normally wouldn't attempt. It is not just a question of being able to shoot in dim light. April 19, 2011
Excellent Close up photos without having to be right next to the subject. I had taken many pictures with the 200 that just would not be able to zoom in enough on wildlife or the kids (yes more wildlife). While I am sure there are other lenses that will provide even superior close up this one is great for me. I am not a professional photographer so this was an easy alternative to the lenses in the $X,xxx price range and with a polarizing filter, I could not be happier. This lens is a must have for me. April 19, 2011
Great nature lens This lens is great for sports and nature shots. Easy to handle and support. The VR feature for image stabilization works great. Takes sharp pictures with great color. Love using this for action shots such as soccer games and bird shoots. April 18, 2011
Great Starter Zoom Lens This was the first lens I bought and I am very much pleased with the product. I take it everywhere I go. It is an awesome lens for shooting birds within 20-30 feet and for great zoom power. I have however sent my lens into Nikon while under warranty for repair. There was a minor part loose in the lens compartment that controls focusing. Nikon quickly repaired my lens and sent it to my doorstep within 2 weeks after mailing. Overall, this is a great lens for those who dont want to spend too much money, but have the ability to take awesome up close pictures. I must admit that the quality of the lens could be more durable (considering mine had a loose part in under a year). April 18, 2011
AF-S VR Zoom-NIKKOR 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G IF-ED Purchased this lens on Saturday 4/16/2011 at Best Buy store. If you are looking for day time sport action pictures then this is your lens. Also works well indoors with flash if you are allowed to use flash. Did months of research on 3 zoom lens listed below, if you need more convincing then I suggest you bring your camera to the photo store and try out all 3 lens yourself. Before buying I tried out on my Nikon D60 the following lens: AF-S VR Zoom 55-200 (to slow for sports, auto focus is slow while panning the camera) AF-S VR Zoom 55-300 (better than 55-200 but still to slow for sports, auto focus is slow while panning the camera) AF-S VR Zoom 70-300 (auto focus is very fast and accurate, VR II is amazingly helpful, sharp pictures) This is the first semi-pro lens I have and I can feel the difference in build quality of the lens and in picture quality. If you just need zoom for still images then 55-200 and 55-300 will do just fine and actually are very light lens to carry around all day. I sure would not want to carry the 70-300 on my neck all day. But for any sport action pictures or birds in flight then get the 70-300 VR, you will be happy. At Best Buy you can pay it off on an 18 months payment plan 0% at around $35.00 a month (NY tax included) so buy the best to get the best pictures. I am very happy to have purchased the AF-S VR Zoom 70-300 IF ED lens and not the others based only on a cheaper price tag. Hope this info helps someone. April 18, 2011
Versatile lens of choice I am defaulting to using this lens a lot of the time. I find it crisp in action and image quality. I am v impressed with it and highly recommend it. April 18, 2011
Great lens This lens has great versatility and produces very sharp photos. It's great for air shows and similar events because it's big enough to give great reach and get good detail of the planes, but it's not too heavy that you can't hold it up very long. April 18, 2011
I have only begun to enjoy this lens. My first photos have all been on auto and the hand held results are amazing. I admit I studied the lens offerings for my D7000 camera; and came to the conclusion that the vibration reduction EG glass was the only zoom lens that made sense to me. April 17, 2011
NIKON'S BEST KEPT SECRET THIS LENS IS CHEAP, SHARP & FOCUSES FAIRLY FAST. SOMETIME YOU DONT NEED 2.8, THAT'S WHEN I REACH FOR THIS LIGHT COMPACT GEM. April 17, 2011
A great Lens in both value and specs As a new DSLR User, combining this lens with a Nikon D7000 was an obvious combination. The photos I've been able to take with this camera/lens combination both in day-to-day usage and on a recent vacation to Africa will ensure memories of what I experienced to last a lifetime for others to view. April 17, 2011
Happy with this lens I used this lens on a trip to Tanzania. I was wondering if it would be long enough to photograph animals as I suspected we would be quite a distance from them while on safari. I was pleasantly surprised to see that this lens combined with my D90 camera performed wonderfully well. Sharp photos and the VR feature was a necessity. I recommend this lens. April 17, 2011
great lens when taking far pictures...specially when you want to take a picture of Mt. Fuji... April 17, 2011
Overall performance This is one or three lenses that I own made by Nikon. This is a 70-300 mm I also own a 50-500 mm and 55 x 70 mm all are AF-VR Zoom models. The 70-300 mm is the most versatile lens in my collection. I've got some great wildlife shot with it including a Hawk in-flight, a Bobcat with a fresh kill in his mouth, and a bird with her chicks in the nest. Vibration reduction on this lens is exceptional and has always performed flawlessly. I would recommend this lens to anybody looking for a medium-range telephoto lens. April 17, 2011
Surpassed my hopes! Limited use so far due to weather but the images have been been amazing. I can't wait to take this lens on vacation this summer! April 15, 2011
Very nice lens when you need to reach out. I use this lens when I need to get close to my subject or for distance shots. The VR works very well and focus is quick and accurate. The non rotating lens really helps when using a polarizing filter. I usually use this lens with a tripod but I have taken nice photos with it when held in hand. It is a very useful lens to have in your bag. April 15, 2011
Great for outdoor photography. I use this lens exclusively for outdoor nature shots and it has been a great addition to my lenses. It's very sharp and it focuses fast in good light. I've used it to take pictures of numerous animals from 50-300 yards and the quality of the photos has been great (assuming I do my part). In my opinion, it's not made for use as an every-day carry lens such as the 18-200mm VR but the additional zoom it provides was what I was looking for. Overall very happy. Easily my favorite lens even though it's only on my camera maybe 20% of the time. April 15, 2011
Great features at a good price This is a great lens for someone looking to capture sports/wildlife in action but don't have the budget for the prime telephoto lenses. It's light weight in terms of zoom lenses and it's quick to focus in on your subject and stay there. I'm please with it's construction and durability and so far it's stayed on my camera since I've bought it. April 15, 2011
I take this lens everywhere! I got this lens to replace the 55-200 that I originally purchased with my camera. That lens disappointed me severely--terrible vignetting. But the 70-300 has been a dream. I use it for wildlife especially, but also pull it out for landscape details, concert performances, and other fun things. I still think of the VR as a minor miracle. It has allowed me to get hand-held shots in lighting conditions and focal lengths that my training says should be impossible. (Okay, it's not a total miracle until they can come up with VR that also makes the animal I'm photographing freeze!) The lens is compact and solid. This is the second most likely lens you'll see mounted on my camera. April 15, 2011
Great Tele Zoom! Great tele zoom lens; high quality at a very affordable price! Great for those shots of architectural details of historic buildings facades, candid shots of wild-life in their native settings, close-ups at sports events, etc. April 15, 2011
Excellent Lens The AF-S VR Zoom-NIKKOR 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G IF-ED is a excellent lens for I use it as my main lens when I go to airshows or watching wild life at the lake or river. The photos are sharp and clear. April 15, 2011
Great Beginner Lens Lens is great for outdoor daytime action shots. I am new at this but I love this lens. Fast focus and great zoom. April 14, 2011
Outstanding len Took the lens to a FIRST regional match. Got outstanding pictures of the competition even in dim lights. Love it April 14, 2011
This is everything a 70-300 should be. It's quick, super sharp, and can be hand held even at 300mm. April 14, 2011
Love It! My Favorite All Around Lens for My Applic I use this lens extensively! I own three of the 70-300mm "VR" Lenses for that reason. Not too heavy for a ten hour day of use. As to amount of use, I'm on my third shutter on my trusted D2H. Also use it on the D2x, D3x, D-300, and down to the D-70. My favorite lens out of twenty eight owned! April 14, 2011
Sharpest lens in the bag Great tele zoom. Sharp thru the range. I've got some great shots of birds and waterfowl in flight and this lens stops the action!! April 14, 2011
Great Lens at Great price The AF-S VR Zoom-NIKKOR 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G IF-ED is a great lens at a super price. I recieved mine as part of kit from Best Buy with my D90 and 18-105mm VR kit. Purchased 2 years ago and this lens has never let me down. I use it 50% of the time as my walkaround lens. Has excellent reach. And does great close-up shots too. I believe much better buy than 80-200mm VR. Pair with 16-85mm VR and second body you'll have 90% of the range you will ever need. Will let you know when My D7000 & 16-85mm Vr arrive next month. April 14, 2011
Excellent Value From 70-230mm this lens is terrific. Sharpness drops off a little at the far end of the zoom, but is still quite acceptable. The VR works beautifully, and this is fairly compact and light weight compared to the much more expensive alternatives. I'm very happy with this lens. April 14, 2011
Must have lens The lens is great for wildlife and landscapes. The lens is light enough to carry all day at the zoo. I have the battery grip on my D80 and have no problems using with out a tripod. The picture Quality is great and I wished I would have bought it with the camera instead of waiting a year later. It is a must have lens for every one. April 14, 2011

However, it does work with the Sigma 1.4x TC. No visible image quality loss, but manual focus is very tricky. Definitely not for moving objects/subjects.

Answer:
While the Nikon D60 does not have a built-in focus drive motor, it CAN autofocus with lenses that have their own drive motor (AF-S and AF-I lenses). Because this is an AF-S lens, it will autofocus with your D60.

Answer:
Yes, it will autofocus on the D60. This lens is an 'AF-S" lens which means it has a built-in 'Silent wave motor). This means it has its own internal autofocusing motor, and it will autofocus on all Nikon DSLRs. All AF-S lenses focus extremely fast and accurately.

Answer:
The best lenses are the ones you can afford and the ones that suit your needs. No point in buying a 600mm if you want to do portraits, likewise no point in buying a macro if you want to do landscape. It would if you pointed out what you want to do and what your budget is.
