Macro Dream!
This lens is fantastic. The sharpness is incredible even with a d90. I use it to take pictures of flowers and insects and I could not be happier. I use it in the studio and outside. In truth I don't often use the VR but it is nice to have when you are taking action shots, or portraits in a low light setting. If you want something that is more versatile than consider the 24-70mm Nikkor Zoom lens. That doesn't have VR and doesn't cover the 105 range but can cover the edge of the macro range quite nicely. If you want to take your Macro to the next level than this is undoubtedly the lens for you. It works really well on my D90. I can't wait to try it on a full FX D800, which is where this baby will really shine!

exellent macro lens!
i use this lens for macro shot and I got amazing results. things I love about this lens its super sharp, beautiful color rendition. some say the AF on this lens is slow for macro work, but not a problem for me because i use MF most of the time when when shooting macro. i love this lens.

The hand held best
This Lens does not disappoint, I have had it for over one year now, and all of my shots with it are stunning. It is by far the sharpest lens in my bag. and on a DX it really takes advantage of the magnification factor. I have used both a TC-20EII and a TC-17EII converter on this lens. It will fully auto-focus even in poor lighting. The shots with the teleconverter are sharp and very acceptable. however without the converter, it is like a razor. I still had to set the fine tune to -8 on my D7000, (back focusing issue). but this lens is by far one of my all around favorites. The VR is what really makes sets it apart from all the other micro lineup, not even the 85mm F3.5 Vr micro can really do what this one can. only the 200mm F4 will surpass this lens in sharpness if you have it properly stabilized, but this lens is made for on the go macro work. I really liked using this lens with the SB-400 flash, keep the weight down and still get excellent light fill. Highly recommended for all users, DX and FX. and If I had to have one lens, and sell the rest off, this would be my keeper. the quality is absolutely top notch.

A must-have lens for your camera bag
In the short time I have had this lens, it's hardly ever detached from my D90 camera. I soon discovered that being mounted on a tripod is vital to avoid camera shake. With such a shallow depth of field at low apertures, it takes practise to get focusing right. I now use a remote and what a difference it has made. This is one of the best lenses I have ever used, and it's so well built, can't fault it at all, just wish the insects would remain still for longer and the wind wouldn't blow so much!

Very good quality lens, high precision autofocus good for portraits with focusing range reduction, for macros I usually use manual focusing!

This one of my favorite lenses.
I love the versatility and quality of this lens. It produces images that are perfectly sharp with a beautiful depth of field. The depth of field is very thin in close-up work, so I had to learn where to focus and how to choose the aperture to produce the effect I wanted. Portrait and still life shooting has been great fun, as well. The 105mm telephoto design allows enough distance from the subject to produce a depth of field large enough to capture a sharp image of the subject in a soft environment. This contrast in focus draws the viewer's attention right to that part of the image you wish to emphasize. The quality of construction is excellent. I always make room in my bag or "fanny pack" for this workhorse.

Superb Lens
This is one of Nikons best. I have the 70-200f2.8, The 200-400 f4 & the 105 f2.8 Micro Nikkor. These are the sharpest & best made lenses I have ever owned. Being near 75 years old, that is saying something. I have owned a lot of lenses.
Expensive & Heavy, yes but they contain a lot of Very good glass in a very sturdy container.

Overall this is a great lens.
This is a great lens to start with. The only thing I would like changed on it is when in manual focus it needs a fine and finer adjustment for focus. Instead of just one ring to focus with put two and let the second be a finer adjustment to the focusing. I have just started using the camera and I love it. Much better and easier to control than the Canon I had.

Best macro ever!
I bought this lens after trying older Nikon and off-brand models and I have to say I am delighted with it. Razor sharp. Colors and contrast are superb. The fact that it doesn't extend while focusing, its focal length and rugged construction make it a great tool for outdoor macro photography. I also use it in the studio for commercial shots. I am very pleased with the results.

My close ups are way better now !!
Pros: It works really nice.. a tripod is really usefull doing this type of photography...even without it i still get some good results.
Cons:
Heavy..on a d300s with mbd10 grip but i don't mind it much the results make up for the weight.
Price..i guess you get what you paid for...i've waited three years to get this lens.
Other thoughts: I wish Nikon would let their customers know that the warranty form filled for their purchases was received.

Excellent Lens
I bought this lens more than a year ago with the expectation to take macro shots of insects, flowers and other small natural objects. The results have been great with the 2.8 glass elements. Recently I've started using it as a portrait lens and now its use has grown two fold. As a portrait lens, the results are spectacular. Each week I place a new image of mine as my desktop wallpaper, and each week I have several colleagues dropping by to say "Wow! nice photo!" The depth of field in portrait shots is great.

Sharpest Lense in My Bag
I have taken close-ups, portraits, and landscape shots with this lens and it has performed well, especially when sharpness is critical. I would recommend this lens for anyone needing professionally sharp images.

I find it to be one lense for intra oral as well as extra oral shots.

This is a great lens!
This lens was recommended as a good close-up lens and a good lens for nature. I have found it is all of that and more. Clear and sharp whether shooting nature scenery, birds in flight, or flower petals. Excellent in low light as well!

Everything I'd Hoped For!
This lens is just incredible.. Very sharp with wonderful bokeh. Macro shots are stunning and makes shooting nature exhilarating! This lens is on my camera more than any of my other lenses. The VR isn't as helpful on macro shots but is otherwise awesome and AF can hunt quite a bit sometimes in low light macro situations. All in all this a superb piece of glass and I would buy it again if I had to!

great for wildflowers
I bought this lens mainly for photographing wildflowers. It has been great.

Fabulous lens
I enjoy taking close-up photos of flowers and dragonflies so I decided to splurge and buy a macro lens. After considerable research to see which lens people recommended and why, I chose the Nikon 105mm VR and I couldn't be happier with it. It's incredibly sharp and since most of the time I don't care to haul a tripod with me, the VR is great. The only thing I've regretted is that I didn't buy it sooner, I simply love this lens and I rarely take it off my camera. If something happened to it I'd buy one again in a heartbeat!

extreme clarity and sharpness in both close -up and distance shooting
April 14, 2011
superior lens,sharp and excellent color
Superb results in portrait and macro.
Stabilizer, manual and auto focusing. I use this with a D300s, for pictures of miniatures, buttons, flowers, insects and portraits.
The 105 captures unposed action from a convenient distance.
Zooms are convenient but this lens has better quality
April 14, 2011
My Favorite lens
I tend to grab this lens from my bag more often than any of my other lenses on a shoot. I use it for extreme closeups and for great portraits. I can't recommend this lens enough for jewelry shoots.
April 14, 2011
Superb Image Quality; Tack Sharp
I purchased this lense because I wanted a good FX macro lense for my D700 that would also be useful for portraits and street scenes. I have high-end Nikkor zooms that are very good lenses and one fixed length (85mm) that is outstanding, though this 105 is by far the best. It is tack sharp, has excellent contrast, very true color, and build quality is solid. And VR is particularly useful when shooting hand-held closeups. (Don't throw away your tripod--all vibration reduction systems have their limits.) While it is not inexpensive, this Nikkor is well worth the investment, and then some. Very highly recommended.

Great lens, but defective
I'm giving the lens a five star rating, but with a caveat. Received the lens in defective condition from B and H. My D3s read the lens shooting at a maximum aperture of f4.7 and a minimum of something like f/57. Was the problem caused by Nikon or B and H? Who knows? This is an awesome lens, I just wish I received one in working condition. I'm replacing a warn out old manual focus 105 f/2.8 lens with this modern marvel. I'm a professional photographer and not having a working 105 has put a bit of a crimp on business. I shot with it for about 10 minutes before figuring out the aperture problem. I've been waiting two weeks for the replacement.

Amazing lens with great clarity
I got this 105mm Nikkor lens a couple years ago and absolutely love it. It is great for portraits, landscapes, and a number of other subjects. This lens is amazing.

Great macro lens
I purchased this lens back when I was still shooting with my Nikon D70 so it has been in my bag a long time. I find the lens a great general purpose macro lens that really comes in handy when you don't want to get "that" close to your subject.
Even on an FX body, this lens fills the sensor from corner to corner.

Not Only A Great Micro but Excellent for Portraits
I originally got this lens for Micro work, which it excels at but soon discovered its also takes outstanding portraits. The face or faces are in perfect focus and the background is creamy smooth!
September 24, 2010
Great Macro and long walkaround lens
If you can get past the minor focus-breathing (Only relevant if you do really tight macro shots) then this lens is a winner.
Solid feel, superb optics. Fast A/F. I really love this lens for all my detail work and the unexpected shot happening several yards away.

The AF-S VR Micro-Nikkor 105mm 2.8 lens would work great on the D3100.I use this lens on my FX D700 and my DX D70s sensor cameras.
Although this lens was designed to work optimally with a FX sensor it still works fabulous with Nikon's DX sensor cameras such as your D3100.
-- If you are getting into the rewarding aspect of Micro photography this is a great lens to start with. Happy Shooting
To fully optimize your shooting experience, consider a R1C1 Wireless Close-Up Speedlight System.

can Af- Nikkor 105 mm f/2.8 used as a telephoto lens?

Answer:
Absolutely! It is great for telephoto use in situations not requiring a large depth of field. It produces very sharp portraits. It is excellent for street photography to enable the isolation of the subject from the surrounding environment without having to be too close. This provides the opportunity to get great candid shots even in low lighting situations without the use of a flash. I love it!Jul 10, 2011 by

To shoot 1:1 the sensor plane is about 1 Ft. from the subject. I have shot many Wasps,Hornets & Bees & have never been stung. I have found,If you don't swat them they won't swat you. Remain CALM & if they start to get agressive, back away slowly & let them calm down. They will accept you if you don't hurt or injur them. Have fun!My Images are to large to download. They were shot with D7000 & 105mm Nikkor & are almost all over 5 MB

My lens 105mm f2.8 Micro Nikkor was made in China & sold in the US. I would have never suspected until I looked. The build is superb, the Glass is flawless the pictures are tack sharp with beautiful bokah. I was dissapointed to learn that the f stop changes & is only f2.8 @ infinity. At 1-1 Macro it is f4. Shooting @ 1:1 i always stop down to f8-f22 anyway so it is a moot point but feel Nikon should advertise it as a variable apurture lens. That said, I would buy it again. BusterOct 17, 2011 by
