Best lens ever
This is the best lens ever. I use it for everything and have had the most amazing results. So sharp. Takes the most beautiful shots of eyes and sleeping babies. Love it and recommend it to everyone.

A Must Have!!!
Just received this lens last week - my first prime lens purchase. My cat was the only one available to pose and the shots I took were awesome. Incredibly sharp, light, fast and the price cannot be beat. I ran the image through Nik Software's Define 2.0 program and there was hardly any noise, something that cannot be said for the 18-105 that came with my D90 kit. I purchased mine for $129 from Amazon and am thrilled.

You should already own this lens.
This lens is about as close to perfection as you can get. It's an incredibly simple piece of machinery that is immensely fun to shoot with. Full frame or crop sensor this lens is marvelous to use. I love using the 50 1.8d on DX as a portrait lens. The overall design is compact and light; so light that I often forget I have it on the body. This lens is tack sharp almost all the time; shooting f/4-f/8 is a dream. Understandably there is some moderate color-fringing when shooting wide open, but the utter lack of distortion and crisp, contrasty images more than makes up for a few minor quirks. Bokeh at 1.8 can be a little chunky, but most of the time it delivers an acceptably smooth depth of field. Simple, thoughtfully executed ergonomics are really a highlight of this lens. Shooting manually with the 50 1.8d is tremendously rewarding, the focus is silky smooth and faultless. The scaling is well marked and easier to read than the window style of other lenses. My only suggestion to Nikon would be to use a slightly higher quality of plastic for the body, though for the price there is little room to complain considering the performance you can get out of it.
For less than 1/10th the price of many professional lenses the 50 1.8d delivers professional images with simple no-nonsense optics. This is a must have lens for your bag.

Nikon's Best Lens Ever.
I can easily say that this is the best way I have ever spent $120. I have a Nikon D7000, and after coming from an 18-105mm kit lens, I'd trade this lens ANY day, despite the zoom in the kit lens. Because for $120 you just can't beat it. I haven't had ONE blurry picture, because there isn't one scenario in which it can't succeed. The bokeh is amazing, it has a a circular effect to it unlike Canon's.
If you are wondering if this is the lens for you, IT IS. Because I have used it in every situation, and it's been great. The only thing I would suggest is getting this len's little brother, the 35mm f/1.8. The 50mm of this lens can be a little too far in focal length at some times. But EITHER lens is a great choice, and I'm very happy with it.

It;s almost free, it is really great
You will discover for the first time that money or ( price ) doesn't mean everything. I love this lens and never expected it to be that much quality. thanks Nikon for that amazing Lens.

When I shoot portraits of models against a white background with my 50mm f1.8D I get a blue flare in the center of the image.
The blue or purple flare is very noticeable even in the LCD screen on my D90.

- Is this a new lens for this camera?- Did you have this problem with any other cameras?
- Does the blue or purple flare appear on the final image also?
- Do you have studio lights that may be hitting the lens at those angles?
- Try changing the Aperature with all other settings the same to see if it helps.

Yes and No. It will fit on the D3100 but this lens will not autofocus. You will need to manually focus it yourself. If you want a similar lens, I'd recommend the new 50mm f/1.8G AF-S lens. It's the same as the f/1.8D but it has a SWM motor and autofocuses for you. Plus, it shoots smoother, and sharper pictures than the 50mm f/1.8D.Any AF-S lens are compatible with the D3100. All AF Lens are not compatible, meaning it doesn't autofocus for you plus other features the lens was designed for.

Yes it is compatible, as are nearly ever Nikon lens, however, you will not have autofocus. If its a 50mm you are after then you may want to look out for the new 50mm 1.8 af-s that has just been announced as this will work and have af on your camera.

The 3100 doesn't have its own focus motor, so you need AFS lenses for autofocus. If you manual focus then no problem, but the autofocus on 3100 is not compatible with the 50mm 1.8D.I think the G is similar except it doesn't have an aperture ring for manual on-the-lens aperture changes (something I never do) and relies on camera to set the lens aperture - which I always do even though my lens is the D and has the aperture ring.
Answer:
Nikon offers two types of autofocus digital camera bodies: those with a built-in focus drive motor and those which require a lens to have a motor. Cameras such as the D3100 do not have a focus motor in it so they require the lens to have the focusing motor – an “AF-S” lens. While these bodies can use a lens with no focus motor (an “AF” lens) you would have to manually turn the focus ring to bring the subject in to sharp focus. You may want to try the AF-S version of this lens.

This will work fine on the D3100 but the autofocus will not work. You will have to manually focus it yourself when you're taking pictures. It shouldn't be too hard as you can use live view to help you focus as best as possible instead of through the viewfinder. I'll recommend the new 50mm f/1.8G AF-S lens for you. It's the same but is compatible with your body and will autofocus for you. Plus it has a SWM motor so it's quiet when focusing. A plus when you're shooting video.Answer:

where is the autofocus switch on the 50mm f1.8 prime lense. I have a d3100.
It looks like there are two switches that you can choose from on this lense....One with two red dots or you can switch it to be one red dot. What does this mean?? is this the autofocus and manual mode??? Please reply ASAP

Answer:
The switch with the two red dots is for locking the mechanical aperture ring at the minimum aperture (in this case, f/22) to insure that the aperture does not come off of the minimum aperture (required when using either Program or Shutter Priority exposure mode on some cameras). To engage the lock, turn the aperture ring to the minimum f-stop and slide the switch, lining up the two dots. As was stated in the earlier reply, this lens will NOT auto-focus on a D3100.Answer:

While these bodies can use a lens with no focus motor (an “AF” lens) you would have to manually turn the focus ring to bring the subject in to sharp focus. You have wide options of lenses to use with this camera.Nikon 50mm f/1.8d: D-type AF-Nikkor lenses relay subject-to-camera distance information to Nikon SLR cameras that feature 3D Color Matrix Metering, 3D Matrix Metering, and 3D Multi-Sensor Balanced Fill-Flash.
Nikon 50mm f/1.8g: The lens has no aperture control ring and is designed to be used with cameras that allow setting the aperture from the camera body. G lenses also provide Distance information to the camera.

Over the years I've shot sports, both Indoors and out. A one lens setup is very restrictive. Lens selection is based on many factors; indoor lighting (type and amount of light), type of sport (fast, slow, team, etc.), rules of the facility regarding where you can position yourself, will flash use distract the athlete, will you be shooting through plexiglass, wire mesh or have an unobstructed field of view, are you at field level or in the stands, end use of the shots, etc.If I was limited to one lens I'd select something along the lines of a 70-200 f2.8 and adjust the ISO as required. This range lens allows you to get reasonably close to the action, isolating individuals when desired or going a bit wider when necessary. Ideally I'd also carry a 28mm or 24mm as I like the look when shooting hockey.
A 50mm is neither wide enough nor long enough in my opinion (I no longer own a 50mm). If you have the run of the venue and you are shooting a gymnastics exhibition you might get away with it. It really does depend on the type of shots you want. I like working close and getting facial expressions where possible when shooting athletic events. If cost is a major consideration, look into factory refurbished lenses. Or, consider a slower lens with higher ISOs.
The most important advice I can give is to study the sport and learn to anticipate the action, be ready and take more shots than you think you need,
