AF Nikkor 50mm f/1.8D
best lens in the whole line up
you can spend more, but why? this is the sharpest lens for its price. there's a reason it's been in the Nikon lineup for such a long time..... they got it right!
pair it with a D700 and the night is yours.

Simply the Best
I purchased a month ago and it's my favorite lens. Great for portraits and close ups! Really responsive lens. It's a great investment! I am extremely happy with this lens.

Best Lens I have ever used
Holy Cow.........The Other Reviews were Right On....From the first picture during the day to the last pictures at twilight WOW....I still cannot believe the Clarity and Color....I was going to buy the Nikon D 3100 and sell my D70 , this lens saved me $550.00 and I can't say enough about the sharpness and contrast.......It's worth more then the MSRP

Best Little Lens Ever
I love this lens and have used it for years with my D50. It gets great sharp photos and it's super fast. The only issue is that it won't work with models like the D3000, D5000, or D3100 because they don't have a focusing mechanism in the body (the lens doesn't have one either which is why it's so cheap!). Make sure it works with your camera and you will never regret it.

This lens works great! I wanted a fixed lens but I had never used one and didn't want to jump into an expensive lens before I knew if I liked using them. This lens makes my images extremely sharp, and really helps the depth of field. The lens works great in really low light situations as well. The price is great and I would recommend it to anyone.

AF NIKKOR 50mm f/1.8D
I have put this lens on my camera and not taken it off. I find this lens easy to use and it produces fantastic photos. I recommend this lens to everyone.

Picked this up as the next lens after the kit lenses. Love the wide aperture and crystal clear pictures. On a DX camera it works out to about 75mm equivalent which is great for everyday shooting. If I'm looking to travel light this goes on the camera and I bring nothing else.
A must have if there ever was one.

I Love this Lens!
I love this lens! Which is why it makes me sad that I can't keep it. I have a D3000 and bought this lens thinking it would work for it. Where it does work as a manual focus lens, it does not auto focus with the D3000. What a bummer! I plan on taking it back and trading it for the 35, but I have really enjoyed it while I've had it. I've been able to learn to take photos with a manual focus, and even the pictures of my moving six-month-old look good. The images come out needing very minimal edits and have the blurry background. It is a great portrait lens, and I'm so sad it doesn't work on my camera! I highly recommend this lens if your camera will work with it. And if you have a camera that it doesn't auto focus with but you don't mind the manual focus, you've found yourself a winner lens!

Fast lens especially in low lighting.
This is go to lens many times.
In Low light this is a savior.
Pictures are outstanding in clarity and color.
The price is the best part.
Can we make others in this price range?
A must have lens. I wouldn't understand any photographer who does have this one in his bag.

It is just perfect
You should never leave home without this lens. Good for everything. And its price? What price? Its almost a free lens due its quality!

There is absolutely no reason you shouldn't own this fast 50mm lens, unless of course you have the 1.4D/G already. I use this on my D100 & D300s all the time. AF is fast, low light performance is great as well. It is nice to be able to shoot at 2.8 and not be wide open, the extra sharpness from being stopped down is very welcomed.

The Nifty Fifty
For the price, you definitley can't go wrong with this lens. Very excellent in low lighting. It's my first prime lens & I now see why so many reviews say that any avid photographer must have this lens in their arsenal. I've already had to lend it to my brother in law & mother in law...they love prime glass! Very fast autofocus if you need it. I enjoy the very shallow DOF & Boket that you get from this lens Images are just sharp as a razor. There's really nothing bad to say about this product!

Fast, hi quality at low price
I own several Nikkors. This lens is one of the sharpest and cheapest of them all which makes for no worry carrying it most anywhere. It is fast & great in low light. It is also compact & fits in any pocket. Its field of view makes it very useful for most situations and with a simple reversing ring makes a great macro rig. It usable on my older film cameras and my D70 Quite simply just a superb all-around versatile lens.

Best Lens for the $
This lens should be in everyones bag. I always recommend this lens for anyone who is looking for a first lens or an only lens! You will not be dissapointed. I have owned the 50 1.8 as well as the 50 1.4 and still prefer the 50 1.8! It is lightweight, compact, fast focusing, and great glass! If you are looking for a bargain lens for low light or natural light shooting then this lens is a must! If you can only get one lens, strongly consider this one! You can not beat the price for what you can do with this lens!

Nikon's Best Lens
Let me echo others who rave about this wonderful little lens. It's sharper than the 50mm f1.4D, weighs only half as much, costs half as much, yet delivers the same or even slightly better optical performance. Distortion is essentially zero. It won't ghost even if you shoot straight into the sun. And, it's a magnificent performer in low light. Quite honestly, Nikon's best lens value by far, and optically one of the best lenses the company has ever made. Bravo!

This lens is an absolute steal for the price you pay and the performance you get. The lens is very sharp and contrasty. The lens stays on my D700 the majority of the time. With the low light capability of the D700 and the speed of the lens, it makes for an awesome ready-for-anything setup. I have used a Nikkor 50mm since the first one I purchased in 1987 and love the perspective and results that I get. Just get one!

Buy this lens, you will never regret it.
I purchased this 50mm f/1.8 lens for use on my new D300s. I had used the same lens on my F-100 SLR but wanted to keep the systems seperate. This lens is very, very sharp and even on my D300s with it's crop factor (75mm) it is really nice. Light weight, fast, and compact. I use a Nikon Clear filter on it with Nikon's rubber hood. Perfect. This is an inexpensive lens that takes beautiful pictures. Get one, you won't regret it.

Small, lightweight, sharp and inexpensive. Excellent on an FX body. Great lens if you want to go light and more compact. It doesn't have all the bells and whistles of the 1.4 G, but for the money this is a bargain.
August 3, 2010
this product performs just as they said it would-great detail, clarity and color reproduction. I use it on my D70 and D200. You do have to move a little to compose, but the images are worth it. I ordered the hood and Nikon's NC filter for it. Good lens worth the money!

Better than any
This lens has unbelievable sharpness, with a very low almost negligible distortion. One of the best lenses ever made by Nikon. I am very proud to have one in my bag.

An essential lens
Arguably the best lens Nikon makes. At less than $150 there is no reason not to have one of these. Excellent contrast and sharpness throughout. Although the 50 1.4 lets in twice as much light you have to pay quite a premium for that sole, rarely required advantage.

Great lens for the price
I purchased this because I wanted a fast lens and didn't want to spend a ton of money. This is a great lens, even if it had costed more. I use this to take pictures indoors. It works especially well taking pictures of my pets as they don't get annoyed with a flash popping off. I also have used it outside. It takes great flower photos. I'm really impressed with the amount of detail that this lens brings out in the subject. Yes, it is a prime lens so you have to physically move forward or backwards to get the shot you want, but it is no big deal.

Exceptional portrait lens
I have read reviews that this lens is a good travel lens. I have used this lens as an idea portrait lens that is tack sharp and extemely versatile. It is an exceptional portrait lens and I carry it as my photographic fun time accessory. I switch it out between both of my D-300s to see if there might be a change in sensor processing. This lens had equal sharpness in both. Well built and well done- I would say.

A great normal lens.
This lens does exactly what it's supposed to and does it well. Plus it's one of, if not the least expensive lenses in Nikon's line. Nikon needs more lenses like this.

Best Value Nikon Product Bar none.
Use it for landscapes. If you wonder why, well use this lens for land scape and stitch 2 to 3 photos. You get a perfect, sharp and contrasty image and don't need a high megapixel count on your camera.
This eliminates using a high MP camera all the time with compromised ISO quality. I use it on my D700 and recommend it to anyone who likes to carry a light weight yet high class lens.

Bright, portable and just beautiful sharp images. Awesome performance in poor light conditions. This lens is a must have. Or if you have a few more extra bucks, go with the f/1.4, but, is it worth the extra money?
July 31, 2010
This little lens is an absolutely must have in every DSLR user's camera bag!!! Fast, crisp, smooth!!! This lens would be a bargain any almost any price! Inexpensive but well made and half the price of the 1.4. There are times when this is the only thing that will work: low light non flash situations, etc. Good for portrait if on a DX camera, equal to 75mm. Would give it 6 stars if I could!

Good little lens
This is what used to be a standard lens on cameras for many years.Long before tele-zooms and wide-angle zooms.
It is always in my bag with it's brother and sister Nikon lenses.
I've found it to be light, fast and compact and very useful in poor lighting conditions

I think this Nikkor 50mm is a must have prime lens
Wow…. I love this lens for the indoor natural lighting and the depth-of-Field for soft backgrounds. This was my first prime lens I added to my D80 Kit. My AF-S Nikkor 18-135mm ED kit lens is great for outside shooting condition, but can’t handle indoors without a big mount flash. Now remember 50mm is going to "shoot" more like a 75mm. Pros: Low Cost, Metal lens mount, External Barrel has a hard plastic cap, Aperture Ring, Good for indoor shooting. Cons: No lens hood.
