Key Features

Endless creative control
Exclusive Defocus Image Control feature

Nikon’s exclusive Defocus Image Control (DC) feature allows you to control the degree of soft focus in the foreground or background of a composition. Use this creative control to make your subjects stand out from their background to softly blur elements in the foreground.
Stunning portraits and more
f/2 medium-telephoto performance

With a medium-telephoto 105mm angle-of-view and a fast f/2 maximum aperture, the AF DC-NIKKOR 105mm f/2 is an ideal portrait lens. Its fast maximum aperture delivers beautiful natural background blur (bokeh) and enables dramatic low-light shooting. And because it’s a NIKKOR, you can expect consistently stunning images in nearly any setting.
A-M
A-M
A-M stands for Auto-Manual Mode. Thanks to a mechanism incorporated in the lens barrel, smooth focusing operation in Manual focus mode is realized in the same way as users have become accustomed to with conventional manual-focus lenses by adding an appropriate torque to the focus ring.
Rear Focusing
Rear Focusing System
A system in which only the rear lens group moves during focusing, thus eliminating changes in the physical length of the lens during focusing and enabling faster focusing. Such lenses are designated with RF on the lens barrel.
Rated 4.6 out of 5 by 14 reviewers.
Rated 5 out of 5 by None better This is the only Nikkor lens I have used that reminds me of the Leica glass I used to use. The results are unique. No it is not the "sharpest" lens made and the DC feature is somewhat obsolete with the advent of Photoslop, but pictures delineated with this tool at f2.0 are unlike any other. September 11, 2013
Rated 5 out of 5 by One of the best portrait lenses I own! I use this lens almost exclusively for portraits. The glass is clear and crisp and it is very fast. This lens works great on FX frames, but it also works very well on crop sensors as long as you remember the 1.5X. I like the versatility the defocusing control gives you, but to be honest, I rarely use the defocus control unless I really want to soften the focus of a subject. I highly recommend this lens! You will not be disappointed if you know what you are doing. This lens paid for itself in the first hour of use! April 10, 2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by Excellent Lens: Love everything about this Lens This is a great Lens. Things I love about this lens are: Picture Quality - Excellent, Very Sharp w/ great Color and Contrast. Build quality - Excellent, Very Ruged Looks and Feel F2 - Fast Lens DC Control; Dont really use but Nice to have Available Built in Hood - I like this Feature. Very Handy. I use this on a D80 and this Lens gets the best out of it. Produces some stunning Photos. Don't have any dislikes on this Lens, except maybe the Price. March 4, 2012
Rated 5 out of 5 by Wonderful Lens I use this lens at my pediatric office. And with the help of Nikon R1C1 macro lighting system it gives me astonishing results. I've tried it with flowers and small objects and it is great. I love the ease of focusing, the sturdiness and the sharpness of the photos. I intend to use it as a portrait lens too and I can't wait to see the results. Super Lens May 14, 2011
Rated 5 out of 5 by Awesome portrait lens I recently purchased the 105mm/f2D lens for portraiture work on a local ballerina. The results were, to say the least, astonishing. The control over depth of field allowed a creativity that is hard to accomplish with regular lenses. The wide open aperture gave awesome backgrounds and the glass itself was flawless and precise. It allows pin sharp and soft focus images without having to deal with post production. I wish I had bought this lens years ago! April 14, 2011

Answer:
The AF DC-Nikkor 105mm f/2 D lens will not autofocus on the D5100 but is otherwise compatible. This also applies to the other DC (defocus control) lens in the current Nikkor lineup - the AF DC-Nikkor 135mm f/2D.

The AF-S VR Micro-Nikkor 105 f/2.8 does not have defocus control but will autofocus on the D5100. For more information on this lens visit: http://www.nikonusa.com/en/Nikon-Pr...

Answer:
Yes, the AF DC-Nikkor 105mm f/2D can be used on the D5100. The D5100 will not auto focus with this lens since the D5100 and the lens do not have an autofocus motors. With this lens there will be a crop factor of 1.5x. For a idea of how this will effect your view, please see the lens simulator: http://static.nikonusa.com/Lens-Sim...

For more information on compatible lenses, please see page 197-199 in the reference manual: https://support.nikonusa.com/app/an...
