I got a helluva deal! I own a D90, which is my fourth Nikon but my first DSLR. While killing time in a pawn shop I spotted an N8008 in great condition. My eyes popped out when I saw this lens attached. I checked to see if it focused, and bought it. The camera works perfectly. The camera and the lens TOGETHER cost me $20.00. Needless to say I was thrilled. I use this lens on my D90 and I like it a lot. The focus is very fast and the sharpness to me is tremendous. The only caveat is that the DOF can get REALLY short and you need to keep this in mind at bigger apertures. A terrific lens, just great. June 28, 2012
Very nice Low light imagery I am very much impressed by this very nice lens!! Exceptional low light capabilities and high speed imagery.. November 22, 2011
Great Lens This is a great lens for its price range. auto focus is slow to respond in dark environment. It should have a manual focus mode. great for shallow focus. November 21, 2011
I love this lens I have always used zoom lenses other than wide angle. This is my first fixed lense and I just love it. It is TACK sharp. Almost too sharp as I have to do some retouching on skin flaws. June 21, 2011
Terrific lens I am very satisfied with this nikon product. The image quality is excellent and the lens is very affordable. I did have a chance to shoot with the new Nikon 85mm 1.4 lens. While I am very satisified with the 85mm1.8 the new 85mm1.4 Nikon lens spoils you. June 6, 2011

Answer:
The D90 might not have an internal focusing motor, which is required for the AF to work on this lens. I have a D5000, for example, and need to focus manually.

Answer:
no, it shouldn't. only af-s (or internal motor drive) lenses can autofocus on a d40, d60, d3000, d3100, d5000 and d5100 bodies as they lack the screw drive built into the body.

Answer:
The D40 does not have a screw drive that I am aware of, so this lens will not auto focus.

Answer:
This lens will indeed work with a D3100. However, it will not autofocus on a D3100 because neither the camera nor the lens have an internal autofocus motor.

I recently acquired several used Nikkor lenses, one of which is marked "AF NIKKOR 85mm f1.8" without the D as shown in the photo above of Product Number 1931. What are the differences between my lens and the one with the D designation?

Answer:
A NIKKOR lens that sends distance information to the microcomputer of a dedicated Nikon camera. D-type lenses can be distinguished by a model name in which the letter D follows the maximum f/number.

Answer:
If you are referring to the D5000 and the new D5100 please take note that Nikon offers two types of autofocus digital camera bodies: those with a built-in focus drive motor and those which require a lens to have a motor. Cameras such as these two do not have a focus motor in it so they require the lens to have the focusing motor – an “AF-S” lens. While these bodies can use a lens with no focus motor (an “AF” lens) you would have to manually turn the focus ring to bring the subject in to sharp focus.
