A great value.
I bought this lens to use both for film and digital use. It is a compact, fast, sharp short telephone and it is inexpensive - quite the bargain. The build quality is good, like any of the consumer AF-D lenses, but still uses a plastic outer shell and aperture ring. The filter ring is metal. It is not bad, but not as nice in the hand as the old manual focus AI/AI-S lenses.
Unfortunately this lens did not work very well with my film body (a FM body from the 70s which has an undiagnosed issue--it's nothing to do with the lens), so I only use it on DX digital. It's more than just a short telephoto on that format, basically equivalent to a 135mm lens. It does not autofocus on my D40, so I only use it as a manual focus lens. The focus ring feels and sounds a little odd in use as it spins the screwdriver-like coupling other bodies have. It is fairly hard to manually focus at larger apertures, since the depth of field is very thin and DSLR finders are optimized for slower lenses. I have trouble getting optimal focus unless I stop down to around f/4, but by shooting several shots and checking the images fully zoomed in on your LCD you can get around this. It should be fantastic for portraits if you nail the focus.
The short focus distance is a little under 3 feet / 0.85 meters. For most people I am guessing this is plenty close, but I love getting close to my subjects and this limits me sometimes. If you are like me, a macro lens might be a better investment.
Hopefully Nikon will update this lens to AF-S. With the high ISO performance of digital slower zooms seem to be more common, but they don't match the performance or ability to limit depth of field of these fast primes.

Great value
Used on a D90, this lens is capable of professional results at one third the price of the 85mm f1.4. Sharp focus with pleasant bokeh, a good portrait lens.

Waiting for 85mm 1.4N
I've shot a ton of jobs with this lens. The lack of coating can be difficult sometimes and diffraction is bad at f1.8, but until the new 85 f1.4 arrives, I'm chillin with this lens.

no, it shouldn't. only af-s (or internal motor drive) lenses can autofocus on a d40, d60, d3000, d3100, d5000 and d5100 bodies as they lack the screw drive built into the body.Answer:

If you are referring to the D5000 and the new D5100 please take note that Nikon offers two types of autofocus digital camera bodies: those with a built-in focus drive motor and those which require a lens to have a motor. Cameras such as these two do not have a focus motor in it so they require the lens to have the focusing motor – an “AF-S” lens. While these bodies can use a lens with no focus motor (an “AF” lens) you would have to manually turn the focus ring to bring the subject in to sharp focus.1 year, 1 month ago
