Good but ... Excellent optics but the lense has become dated. Need a modern VR version exploiting modern optical advances. July 30, 2010
Unreliable AF Great lens when it's working. Used it for bird photos coupled with a 1.4TC with great results - very sharp. However the autofocus has given me problems and have not been resolved with two trips to the Nikon Service Center - incredibly dissapointing. Not sure if I have a lemon here but it's very clear that the Service Center has a QA problem. Friend has the same lens that he has used way more with no problems. February 19, 2012

I have a Nikon D5100 and I have taken some pictures with 18-55 and 55-300 lenses and eventhough I use aperture mode settings, I am not getting sharp pictures. What do you recommend for a good Lense for Landscape pictures.

Answer:
With long lenses, sharpness may be impacted by camera shake / motion. Use of a tripod may reduce that motion for you. It can be a pain to carry the "sticks" around, but the results can make it all worthwhile.

the Compatibility List on this lens shows that it's compatible with the TC-17E II teleconverter, however on the AF-S Teleconverter Compatibility List it shows this lens is 'AF limitations' on the TE-17E II converter. Which is true?

Answer:
Well both, yes it can use the 1.7tc but depending on what camera body you intend to use it on would hinder the ability to auto focus as af would only be available on cameras with F/8 support.
