Best Styling for a Necessity
To me, a camera case is a necessity. If you use the camera at all, it will take falls. I had expensive digital cameras slide off the hood of my car; and fall off the car seat onto the pavement. I’m on ocean beaches with sand and salt spray. The case may not prevent damage entirely but at least I am doing something to protect my investment.
I like this case for its styling, size, and the Nikon name. It should be more welcome in restaurants compared to backpacks, sweaty holsters, or gear boxes.
This case is really a holster. The D5100 camera drops into it and is connected with a retaining strap. The material and styling are classy. The case is tailored to the camera. But that creates a problem: It is intuitive to reach into the case, grab the camera and pull it out. If you do that, you will keep opening the side panel on the camera. I’m right handed so the door to the flash memory is pulled open. Instead, I take the camera out of the case by holding both by the lens, then turning the case upside down to let the camera slide out, straight down into the palm of my other hand. (Pour the camera out instead of pulling it out.)
It fits the D5100 with the 55-200 mm lens. I have the case for the remote commander glued into this case (if you do this, pick a spot where the commander won’t be squeezed “on”).
Best features: Material, styling, fit.
Worse features: No thick padding or cushioning for the camera and lens.

A perfect fit for my D5100 with 18-55mm lens. Designed to easily fit the attatch points for the camera strap. Very uesful when wearing strap around the neck, lift up the velcro attatch tab and the cover comes off very fast so no time lost fumbling around. Very well made and should last for years.
