Reliable
I received the D5000 camera and battery in December, 2010. The battery has been reliable and the use between charges seems more than adequate. With greater use of the camera, I have found the need for a second battery in the event I am in a remote location without means for recharge.

We have a D5000 with supplied charger with this battery (MH-23). Can we use this charger in the UK and France with the correct power adapter. My husband seems to think that we can't use it in the UK due to the 240 v but surely everything is made to an international standard now.

Answer:
These batteries have a shelf life. They can lose 1% of their power per week just sitting around. So if you haven't used it in seven weeks, it's likely it's down to 50% of it's fully charged power.
Also, you can only recharge these batteries about a few hundred times before it no longer can hold a charge. One year can also be the useful life of a well-used rechargeable battery.
Your charger may show it's fully charged, but if it's not up to snuff, full is relevant. Leaving the battery on the charger too long after it's fully charged is also not a good idea.
Lastly, are you sure your charger is working correctly?
