HDR (High Dynamic Range)

Exquisite detail in highlight and shadow

In scenes with extreme contrasts, such as bright, sunlit clouds and a foreground deep in shadow, it was once quite difficult to render the textures of both equally. Not any more. D5100 combines two exposures to create an image revealing an extremely wide dynamic range, but with less noise and richer color gradation than ever before.
Capture every detail with remarkable clarity—the D5100 brings image quality in a class of its own.

Stunning image quality

Image quality in a class of its own

Incorporating the latest Nikon D-SLR technologies such as the 16.2MP DX-format CMOS sensor and EXPEED 2 image processing engine, the D5100 delivers outstanding image quality. Its CMOS sensor offers a remarkably wide ISO range (ISO 100 to 6400) with reduced noise which enables you to shoot at faster shutter speeds and capture scenes and subjects with less blur. Handheld shooting and full HD movies come out looking great even in low light.

Good Performance for a Good Price It is my first DSLR and I am amazed with it, because it has all the necessary elements that you need when you are interested in learning photography. it has an incredible image quality and color reproduction that I never got from a digital camera and also a good performance in low light conditions. No one of my photos has been modified with special Software, I only convert them from RAW to JPEG, and they were taken using M,P and S modes only. October 4, 2014
it gives all benefits in one.Nice to use it. First of all i would like to say that its looks very gorgeous. So much comfortable to handle. Its picture quality is superb.I think it is all in one. August 11, 2014
Amazing Camera!! The d5100 has allowed me to take the next step in photography. I love using it and can't wait to build my knowledge of photography by continuing to use it. May 31, 2014
Great First DSLR I printed out the complete manual that came on the CD, learned where all of the controls were and took a digital photography class which has got me really comfortable with this camera. I highly recommend that all folks like myself that are new to DSLR cameras and the functions should do this. I know that I am getting so much more out of the creative control functions because I did. I hardly use the auto setting any more. Now it is easy to use, and takes great pictures. I do wish it had a dedicated ISO button. I have assigned the FN button to control the ISO. The kit lens that came with the camera seems to be doing a good job. I bought the 55-200 lens refurbished from the Nikon website. That also works great. I use both lenses regularly. I am so very happy with this camera and the lenses. May 28, 2014
Nice for the price Very good images. Easy to use. Easy to access most shooting modes from the back panel. The swivel screen is a must have for self portraits and video. Wish it had 5 exposure bracketing instead of 3 brackets. I really like its small size and light weight. My particular camera has picture control settings that I have to custom set to get decent results. For what you can get this camera for now as a refurbished model $350 currently on Nikon Store..... its a deal that can not be beat anywhere in photographic bang for the buck. Rock on my brothers... if your looking for a rock solid DSLR on a budget look no further. May 16, 2014

Viewfinder focus vs. LED focus?

I seem to get better clarity of on close-up shots of objects when I focus with the viewfinder. I am shooting on a stand, and have to move the camera up and down on the stand to photograph many different sized objects. The objects are fragile, so for larger objects (with the camera higher), I have to use the LED screen to tell the camera where to focus. It comes out more blurry when I use the LED vs. the viewfinder, but I can not reach to the top of the camera to look through the view finder. The blurriness, with a diffuse background, appears at the edges and end of the object. Is this an unavoidable problem? Other approaches that might be useful?

I read that changing the ISO requires going into the menu system on the 5100. But when looking over the manual it looks like you can assign the ISO settings to the function button. Does this allow the ISO to be changed quickly without having to go into the menu system like my Canon XSi Allows? I like the image specifications on the Nikon, but I don't want to lose the ability to make changes to key settings quickly.

You need a Nikon lens with a AF-S designation to autofocus on the D5100. Nikon makes about forty or so of these lenses, available at any camera shop and lots of online retailers.

Because there's only 10mm and 16mm fisheye lens on this site, and I'm not a proffesional, so it's hard to figure out if the lens will fit or if they will be too small. I like fish-eye effected pictures, which is why an answer is crucial to me. Thanks.

Answer:
AF DX Fisheye-NIKKOR 10.5mm f/2.8G ED is a better choice for DX cameras. You will not have auto focus with either, the D5100 does not have a built in focus motor and neither do the lenses.

Answer:
Per the Nikon section for the Nikon D5100. The D5100's shutter unit is tested for 100,000 cycles. There really is no service that has to be done to your shutter. The only thing I can think of that you would send it into to Nikon for service would be to have the sensor cleaned.

Hope this answers your question. Oh and Nikon is conservative with the rated shutter actuations.

I am trying to find out if the 5100 has a cropped movie mode that will give me a 1:1 ratio for astronomical photography. With the reading I've done so far, it appears that it can get to 3:2 only. Is that correct?

Answer:
Since you have the option set to ON file numbering continues from the last number used or from the largest file number in the current folder, whichever is higher. If the previous folder contained a photograph numbered 9999, a new folder will be created automatically and file numbering will begin again from 0001.

How to get the flash to fire with auto iso turned on?

I was playing with my new 35mm f/1.8g dx lens last night and decided to use the auto iso feature. I turned ISO Sensitivity to 200, Maximum sensitivity to 1600, minimum shutter speed to 1/30. When I started to take some test photos in A mode, selecting various apertures and the flashed popped up it would adjust the ISO to the max (1600) but push the shutter speed beyond the minimum of 1/30 taking exposures at IS0 1600 and 1.3" shutter speed instead of firing the flash.

The flash icon seems to be grayed out on the info screen. I thought it would not violate the shutter speed and iso requirement and instead fire the flash. Is there some setting I have wrong or am I just misunderstanding the feature?

I also have AF-C set and that's really the first time I've started using that.

Answer:
this is focusing screen in D5100,

Focusing Screen, Type B BriteView Clear Matte Mark VII screen

I would contact "Service and Support" in upper main menu and ask if they have other focusing sceens available,

I own D2X, and you can actually change focusing screens in it...but it was Nikons’ flagship model too, I dont know if that is available on other cameras...
